Observations from the Colts at Titans Game

I think the Titans will lead the league in rushing this year. They have a very under-rated offensive line. They have several different running backs with very different styles. Add in Vince Young's rushing yardage, and the Veer offense that they run from time to time, and I think #1 is very likely. However, predicting which one of the backs will have a good game is extremely difficult. Chris Brown ran all over the Jags, but couldn't get anything going against the Colts. LenDale, who is so out-of-shape by the way, didn't impress me against Jacksonville, but ran well against the Colts. He's never gonna have break away runs, but he was a nice hammer for the Titans today.

Vince Young is still very immature. Early in the game he gets tackled by a gang of Colts. Nothing out of the ordinary happens. But he lays on the ground after the play, faking injury, and then after a few moments, leaps up and sprints around the field. It was pretty ghey. For some reason, the Titans fans liked it. Then, on the Titans last drive before the half, he lowers his shoulder into Kelvin Hayden after a decent run. Hayden continues to drive him out of bounds, and his arm is on Vince's shoulder pad. For some reason, Vince takes offense to this and throws the ball at Hayden. 15 yard penalty. Kills their drive, and gives it back to the Colts, who drive down inside the 5 to kick a FG right before the half.

Vince Young is still not very accurate. He overthrew several guys badly in critical down and distance. But he did make some very nice throws, and definitely has the tools to improve. He will be a pain in the ass for years. At the end of the game, the Colts were putting 8 or nine guys in the box and daring Vince to beat them with his arm. His WR's aren't that good, and dropped some slightly off-target passes that would have helped a lot. Young was definitely picking on Colts CB Tim Jennings, and made some nice throws to Roydell Williams. Kelvin Hayden must have got hurt, because I'm not sure why Jennings would be the outside CB there.

The Titans were doing a lot of max protect with their offensive line, which kept the Colts D-line in check. The Colts blitzed more in this game than I have seen them do in a long time. Bob Sanders ended up with 2.5 sacks. With all the blitzing, there were plays to be made in the passing game for the Titans, they just didn't take advantage of them.

The Colts D much better this year. Even missing Freddie Keiaho and Rob Morris, they did an excellent job. Yes, they gave up some yards rushing, but that is going to happen to a lot of teams against the Titans. But in two games, the Colts have only allowed one long TD drive.

Kyle Vanden Bosch was giving Tony Ugoh all he could handle. Ugoh did pretty well, but gave up a critical sack on the Colts last drive that forced a punt and gave the Titans a chance. Vanden Bosch has a great motor, but the TItans are starting to get a reputation as a dirty team. They play till the echo of the whistle, and there were several times they should have been flagged. Courtland Finnigan speared Wayne as he lay on the ground after a catch, and Vanden Bosch drilled Addai in the back after he was clearly down. No flags. They are a physical team, but the late hits will hurt them if the refs are calling them. The Titans also had several very clean and legal hits on Peyton after his release. It's the most abuse I've seen him take since the play-off game against PIttsburgh.

Peyton did not run the ball enough. Addai needed more touches. They were running well, but sometimes Peyton just wants to keep calling his own number. The Colts got the ball with 6 minutes to go. In the play-offs last year they did awesome at running the ball, and just running out the clock. They were doing great until they got to the 30 yard line. Then Peyton threw an errant low pass that Marvin dropped. Harrison was wide open, and it was a good call, it just didn't work. The Titans were clearly run blitzing on second down, but I think you still need to run it there. Instead they pass, incomplete again, and the Titans still don't have to call a TO. Third down was the Vanden Bosch sack. Just not good clock management. Especially when you are only up by 2 points and a FG beats you.

The Colts kicking game SUCKED! Vinatieri had an extra point blocked. The protection wasn't great, and the kick was low. Then on another chip shot FG, the Titans get a hand on it again, and it somehow goes through. Then Adam misses a 36 yarder. Yuck.

By my count, Dallas Clark dropped 3 balls today.

LP Field shoud be renamed LP Dirt Patch. What is the deal? Can you not grow grass in Tennessee? The footing was terrible, and the ground looked as hard as a table top. There was a lot of slipping and falling going on.

Can you believe the Colts and Texans are playing for first place in the AFC South next weekend?

I believe it. A lot of ANALysts again picked the Jags to challenge the Colts for the AFC South title. But with Dork Koetter calling the offensive plays, they may not win a game this year!! Talk about not using your tools or even what worked well last year - MJD..

As for the improved Colts D, all you had to say was - (a healthy) BOB SANDERS.

He is THE difference makes on the Colts team...without him they are a different team.

Just has to stay healthy

It's only 2 weeks and may not be as noticeable to an outside fan or someone who doesn't watch every Colts game, but I would like to say - IMO - both Kelvin Hayden and Marlin Jackson are upgrades over Nick Harper AND Jason David..

They have defitely done well. But honestly, they haven't really been tested yet. Brees and Young rarely threw deep.

Absolutely. They're not an elite unit, but they're executing Dungy's scheme a lot better than they have before. And I like the way that they're swarming to the ball-carrier like angry hornets this year (as opposed to the "hand-tackling" of last year). They did a great job today, especially considering that they were missing both of their OLBs.

Vanden Bosch is highly-underrated and was a good test for Ugoh today. Peyton is going to take more sacks than usual this year, but I don't think that Ugoh will be a liability at LT. I think he'll get better as the season goes on.

Vanden Bosch has a great motor, but the TItans are starting to get a reputation as a dirty team. They play till the echo of the whistle, and there were several times they should have been flagged. Haynesworth is a punk and Vanden Bosch isn't much better. And it's a shame, because those two are VERY good players. Vince is also immature as hell. He needs to shut his trap, stop scuffling with players (including his own teammates), stop thumbing his nose at his team's rules, and work on his throwing accuracy.

Peyton did not run the ball enough. Addai needed more touches. They were running well, but sometimes Peyton just wants to keep calling his own number. The Colts got the ball with 6 minutes to go. Again, I agree. Peyton gets way too pass-happy at times, like he's playing Madden or something. He should've checked to a screen, rather than trying to hit Marvin in the endzone. Instead, he badly under-threw the ball and Harper almost picked it off. They didn't need another TD... all they needed to do was run more time off the clock and get into FG range. A FG there would've made it 25-20 and forced Vince to get it into the endzone with no more than a minute on the clock.

Nashville is going through a horrible drought right now. I know that home-owners haven't been allowed to water their lawns for some time and are getting fined $1,000+ for doing so. I imagine that the water rationing has affected LP Field.

BTW, what exactly is "LP"? Is that like LG?

Another thing I want to know, and I guess I'd have to ask a Penn State fan, is what is the deal with Ed Johnson. That dude is awesome. 6'2" and 300 lbs, and he goes undrafted? How does that happen? The Colts would be up a creek without him, after losing Booger. An undrafted free agent rookie DT, starting and making plays for the SB champs? Polian amazes me sometimes.

Joe Pa gave a ring endorsement on this game, and Dungy listened.

More on this. Check out this from the Tennesseean:

When the Titans lost 14-13 at Indianapolis last October, Young threw a cleat into a locker room wall and it stuck.

Sunday as he left the field, Young ripped off his uniform. He still hadn't cooled down when facing the media about 30 minutes later.

"These silly questions,'' an irritated Young said. "We played a hard game. Some of these questions, you can just save some of them. How we played as a team — that is what you should be talking about. We fought real hard to get back into the game and that is the good part of it.''

Young's emotions also got the best of him during the second quarter. He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct when he threw the ball at Colts defensive back Kelvin Hayden, who made contact with Young out of bounds. It killed any chance of the Titans finishing the drive with a score.

Young clearly has a hard time losing. And on this Sunday, losing was especially tough.

"We got together after the game and said, 'Keep your heads up,' '' Vanden Bosch said. "We got down and we kept fighting and that is the same thing that happened at the end of last season. This team doesn't know quit.

and . . .

This time, however, Young and the Titans came up short.

It ended with Young throwing his helmet in frustration following a 22-20 loss to the Colts. There was no last-gasp magic.

I rewatched America's Game the other night. The thing that I didn't know and it amazed me was that something like 17 of the Colts players were undrafted. If I remember that stat correctly that seems amazing to me.

I can't believe it, but I am pretty stoked about it. :D Hopefully Andre can make it back this week.

It looked to me like he took a finger in the eye on that play. :D
