Mangini Blackballed?

I know the initial thread was locked due to a pissing match between two of our brethren. Ain't looking to stoke that fire, I just found Peter King's column in this weeks Sports Illustrated to be pretty interesting.

King says there is a coaching code in the NFL, and Mangini has been trampling it ever since he left Belichick and the Pats. Per King, the code goes like this, with some examples:

1. Don't mess with a former colleague's players - Mangini violated this by signing free agent LB Matt Chatham, who the Pats were trying to keep, back in March 2006, immediately after he left New England. The article doesn't mention it, but Mangini went after Deion branch as well. The article notes that when the Cowboys were looking for a kicker in the same offseason, Parcells let it be known that he wouldn't be touching Vinatieri, who was a free agent, because he was Belichick's player and Belichick was a former assistant under Parcells.

This seems ridiculour IMO, that somehow Parcells is duty-bound to pass on the best kicker available because he and Belichick coached together many years ago? I'd think he's duty-bound to do the best he can by his current employer, but so be it.

2. Don't mess with a former colleague's coaches - for example, when Chris Palmer got the Browns' head coaching job, with the assitance of a recommendation from parcells, he specifically did not go after Romeo Crennel for his defensive coordinator (Crennel was then Parcells' d-line coach).

This one makes more sense to me.

3. Don't snitch - for example, the article states that the most violated rule in the NFL is the anti-tampering rule, prohibiting contact between teams and prospective free agents prior to March. This rule is broken routinely by GMs throughout the league (per King), and other GMs may complain about it, but never so loudly or specifically as to get someone else in hot water. King also points out that last season, the Lions and Packers caught the patriots taping and simply told them to stop without informing the league, thus following the coaching fraternity's antisnitching code.

I guess I understand this, noone wants to be known as a snitch - but didn't the Patriots file a formal complaint with the league accusing the Jets of tampering in the case of Deion Branch? I cannot recall, but I think they did, in which case I don't think Belichick really has a leg to stand on in terms of complaining about snitching.

Interesting anonymous quote from one head coach in the league: "If he wasn't before, Mangini's dead to Belichick now. What Mangini did is a disgrace. He wouldn't be a coach in this league without Bill, and this is how he repays him."

Gonna' be interesting when the soon-to-be 4-2 Jets go to Foxboro in December - given how the two teams are performing right now, you gotta' wonder if Belichick is gonna' try to roll up the score on his old buddy Mangini.

Maybe Belichick filed the complaint to get back at Mangini for the Chatam issue?
