What's all the fuss about LSU?

Godtomsatan asked this question on another thread:

"How come threads about Ohio State, about Notre Dame, about Michigan, about USC and/or Washington always end up about LSU?"

Actually a very good question that rightfully should not be answered on a thread titled USC/Washington. In fact I have a few of my own.

Why is ESPN GameDay going back to Baton Rouge? Weren't they just here a few weeks ago? And what's up with CBS? Are they adopting LSU like NBC adopted Notre Dame? Just heard today that Dave Price, CBS “The Early Show” weather anchor and feature reporter, will be filming live on LSU’s campus on Friday, Oct. 5, to showcase LSU tailgating traditions. What the hell does the national weather and LSU tailgating have in common?

Enough is enough, right? Not so, now CBS comes out with an announcement stating they will nationally televise back to back LSU games despite the fact that both LSU and Kentucky have really tough matchups this week. That doesn't seem fair, does it? And please lets don't even talk about the media ranking LSU #1 in their AP poll, especially at the expense of the media's adopted team, ok?

What's the worse thing that could happen next? Tigers and Wildcats both win and ESPN GameDay follows LSU to Lexington?

I'm sorry Godtomsatan for rambling. But maybe LSU will finally lose a game and all of college football will once again turn it's attention back to Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame & USC.

LSU had/will have VaTech, FLA, Auburn and SoCarolina all at home, and really only KY and AL on the road. If LSU wins their 4 decent home games, esp. this week, plus 2 decent roadies they go into the SEC title game at 12-0 or 11-1. Hopefully vs. GA, since that would not be a replay game - and they get FLA, Aub. and KY all at home too. That's 4 or 5 currently ranked teams, and only 1 on the road + 1 neutral site. And personally, I think VaTech is overrated, but whatever.

Meanwhile, USC also plays 4-5 currently ranked teams, but most on the road: Neb, OR, Cal and AZSt. UCLA (#25 in coaches poll) will likely not be in the top 25 by the time we play; and while that one is technically at 'home' - those rivalry crowds are about 50/50 here in L.A. anyway. So obviously USC should get the nod - on SOS anyway - if both USC & LSU were to end up with, say, 1 road loss. (And USC should not lose at home, but LSU could, to either FLA or Auburn.) Unless the 1 USC loss is to Cal, and Cal goes 12-0 and takes the top spot. Cool for us Pac10 homers.

Forget the Big12 and Big10+1, since I don't think anyone goes 12-0 there, and then the poor SOS brings the best 11-1 teams (OU and OSU/WISC) down a bit.

And then there's the gutsy little USF Bulls (Aub. & WV down, Cinc., Rutg. and Louisv. to go) and BC Eagles (VATech, FLSt, Clem. and Miami still ahead). If they end up going 12-0, would one get a shot at the NC game? Maybe with that SOS, but it will be tough - BC hasn't really played anyone yet, and USF needs the BigEast to continue to do well overall.

Only 1 non-BCS conf. team ranked, HI at #15/16 and at 5-0, but they still have to play Fresno St., Boise St and the Huskies. Count at least 2 losses there; although with all 3 at home, maybe they can do it and sneak into a BCS game for a big $ payday. But poor SOS dooms them for the NC shot.

Wow, too much analysis for this early, and there is so much football still to be played! I love this game....

Sorry, can't concede SOS to USC at this point in the season. LSU opponents are a combined 13-11 while USC's are 9-11. LSU has already faced and defeated two ranked teams versus one for your Trojans. Looking ahead LSU is guaranteed to have another ranked team this weekend and unless Kentucky gets humilated at Carolina they will likely be ranked as well. All this while USC plays Stanford & Arizona.

Granted USC plays their highest ranked opponents in the last 5 weeks of the season, but who's to say they will be highly ranked teams by the time you guys play them. If the PAC 10 is as competitve as claimed then upsets are going to happen. IMO you get alot more bang for your buck when it comes to SOS with the pollsters if you beat a team while they are ranked vs. not being ranked aka potentially Virginia Tech, S. Carolina, Nebraska etc. Plus playing Notre Dame this season certainly doesn't add much to USC's SOS either.

My biggest fear as a football fan is that the Big 10 champion goes undefeated and either BC or S. Florida go undefeated while both the Pac 10 & SEC champions finish with one loss each and both conference champions are out of the NC game.

1) In a perfect system, the timing of when you play them shouldn't matter, IF the final rankings at the end are spot on. The only thing that would figure in then would be if a big player(s) was/were injured at the time you played them. But since its not a system without bias and we know that timing, momentum, etc. all figure in, I could agree with you on that.

2) I share your fear that 1-loss and a tough SOS would hurt a SEC/PAC10 team more than a soft SOS would hurt an undefeated SoFLA, BC or OSU/WISC. Again, it comes down to the wisdom of the voters - being objective rather than a conference homer, etc. Let's hope that doesn't happen, but if it does, then it should help us toward the 'playoff promised land' - in X years/decades from now. When I'm in a wheelchair and drooling all over myself......

I wont get into any pissing matches here but I do have to ask 1 question. Does LSU make thier own schedule or is that done by the conference? :D

Should it matter, when considering SOS? Playing 3 or 4 ranked teams on the road is totally different than 3-4 at home, no matter who came up with the schedules.....

With the BCS making #1 vs #2, was the cheeering for LSU now likely not having to play USC, or something else. Because essentially, in the end 1 is 2 and 2 is 1.

1) They're still pissed at Booty and (especially) McKnight for leaving the state, so they're happy those two won't get a shot at the NC title this year, or

2) they don't have to play USC for it, or

3) still pissed about the split a few years back

take your pick, or combine all 3.....

I can tell you as a fan that not playing USC will actually be a negative for us. We would rather go up against them as a kind of payback for having to split with them last time!

It is funny/interesting to see how LSU vs. USC has turned into a Internet Rivalry of sorts considering they haven't played on the football field since 1984. FYI : the year LSU traveled to S. Cal and defeated the Trojans 23-3. :D

Here's an article written in the Daily Revelle (LSU Student Paper) that attempts to explain.

According to the article the constant debate about who the sole national champion was in the 2003 season has also become somewhat of a talking point for best friends LSU's RB Hester and USC senior quarterback John David Booty, former teammates at Evangel High School in Shreveport.

Hester said he and Booty talk all the time about what could happen between the two teams come January if the preseason polls hold true to form.

"It's fun to talk about," Hester said. "When we talk on the phone we say 'Man it'd be great to play for a national championship.' If we're fortunate to get in the national championship with them, it'll be a good thing. But that's so far away it's hard to think about."

The cheers were for the "golden child" of the over-rated pac 10, going down! LSU fans, just like the rest of the SEC laugh at the pac 10, right or wrong it's how the SEC thinks. Year in and year out around the SEC/LSU all you hear is USC would lose 4 games IF in the SEC, home or away, it does not matter!
