Chad Pennington stinks

I just don't think you can be a QB in this league if you can't get the ball more then 20 yards down the field. A QBs livelyhood is his arm and Chad has a big wet noodle.

He's never had a good arm, yet he has been an effective qb. But he can't afford to throw critical interceptions like he has been.

Well, I've not spent much time watching little girls throw, but I will say I've never seen Pennington look so bad as he does this year. It isn't just his arm, he's making some very bad decisions. That is supposed to be his strength, making the right reads and not forcing the ball. In the past he made adjustments to compensate for the weak arm.... now sometimes he looks like a rookie with a weak arm. He doesn't even feel the pass rush pressure the way he used to. He does look awful.

Still, I think Mangini will stick with him for at least a couple-three more losses. Mangini has been much more conservative, much more "play not to lose" this year vs. last. He has that luxury this year, his job isn't in danger no matter how bad the Jets are. Next year however.... he's better get Clemens NFL ready for 2008. His future rides on it.

So what you are saying is...

Get Kellen Clemmens in NOW!!!

My apologies to little girls for comparing them to Pennington.

Pennington can't even throw a ten yard out these days. Every pass looks like it's being lofted, no zip at all on the throws and the decision-making is very, very poor.

how effective can Clemens be? :D

I mean...is he really worth a roster spot?...I like his weapons, but I really wonder if he's worth scooping up..

A few weeks back he looked pretty good filling in for the injured Pennington against the Ravens.

Sounds like you spend a lot of time with little girls. Or at least spend a wee bit too much time thinking about them. I'd forget about the apology, and just stick to talking about FF here.

Back on topic, without any 14 year old name calling exchanges, Pennington has been bad, no doubt. His arm is about what it's been for the past 3 years. The difference is that he isn't timing his throws, isn't reading the defenses correctly, and is making bad decisions. If you just realised now that he has a weak arm, you've been living in a cave. Please tell me there are no little girls in the cave. I'll sleep better.

He's never had a laser rocket arm but before the last surgery he could get it down field. Now, not so much.

yup- I don't see alot of Jet games but when I do, wow- it is amazing to me that he is a starting QB in the NFL, seriously.

I have never seen a QB with a weaker arm in the NFL.

I picked up Clemens last week hoping he'd get a shot soon. There is NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE on our waiver wire in that league. I really need the depth badly.

Hope we see him soon.

Although Chads arm sucks this is not why we are losing. I blaim the coaching staff on this big time.

Play calling is the worst I have ever seen. 4th and goal at the 2 I think and they go in shotgun formation with no RB on a subpar receiving corp and pennys weak arm. Yes, Chads arm sucks so coach around it. Do more play action especially when TJ is having a monster game.

I like Chad but its time for a change even though its not his fault.

Mangini came out after the game and already said that Pennington will start next Sunday in Cincinatti.

Play calling yesterday was unspeakably bad. 2nd-and-1 on the 4 yard-line, down 8 and with about three minutes to play.

2nd down - T Jones into the line, gets stonewalled - no problem with this call.

3rd down - three receiver set, then T Jones goes in motion and they now have an empty backfield set. Everyone in the stadium knows it's a QB sneak coming, no gain.

4th down - fade pattern to Coles in the left corner, essentially a jump ball and hope for the best.

With the success Jones was having, and knowing it was 4-down territory, I just thought it was relatively obvious to send him into the line two more times if necessary on thrid and fourth down. I could even live with a play action pass on third down - but the QB sneak and then the fade pattern, that was ugly.

Jets fans are clamoring for Clemens - I think everyone fell in love with him when he engineered that near comeback in the 4th quarter against the Ravens, although it should be said that he was pretty oridnary himself for the first three quarters of that game. Still, it's time to find out what we have in Clemens as we will need to know that this offseason, and at 1-5 the playoffs are not a reasonable objective for this season. Jets' bye week is week 10, and if Mangini sticks with Pennington until then, he would still get a 6-game look at Clemens. The problem is that if the Jets are 1-9 or 2-8 at that point (very realistic possibility IMO), then Clemens will be playing with a bunch of demoralized teammates, so it may not qualify as a fair opportunity for him to prove his worth. Jets would be best served for the long haul by starting Clemens as soon as possible.

Here's PFW's take on the situation, kind of a different angle:

Despite Chad Pennington’s struggles in directing the Jets’ stagnant offense, we hear head coach Eric Mangini feels he can’t afford to make a QB change just yet. For starters, he fears that opting for the stronger-armed Kellen Clemens would be viewed as throwing in the towel on the season, something he’s not ready to do at 1-5. More importantly, he can ill-afford to further cripple his already strained relationship with the team. Mangini’s authoritarian coaching style is detested by his players, and benching the well-liked Pennington would be seen as a supreme lack of loyalty. However, insiders tell us that if offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer lobbied for Clemens, he’d likely be successful. And as Schottenheimer has gone from prospective head-coaching candidate to struggling assistant in the span of five weeks, he may be willing to do just that. In such a scenario, Mangini could save face by saying it was Schottenheimer’s decision, and Schottenheimer doesn’t risk undermining his rapport with players because they don’t have a personal problem with him. But if Pennington remains the starter and the losses continue to mount, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that Clemens will take over QB duties sometime before the end of the season.
