Blowout argument about a "weak" trade attempt.

I am getting into it with one of my league mates (non-BOTH) about a couple of trades that were proposed around week 3. It's getting (or gotten) annoying and heated, but this is a case where the person I am having the argument just won't back down despite my attempts to keep it light and serious. I'd like some Huddler's opinions. Here's the deal:

This is a Yahoo league, no PPR, basic scoring, TE required with some yardage bonuses. This was offered around week 3 (it was the week before Delhomme got injured):

I give Delhomme, Marshawn Lynch or Thomas Jones (his choice), and another player TBD (most likely a decent, but non-stud WR or D. Foster) for Tomlinson and Witten. Now remember, this is when LT was seriously underperforming and who knew how well Witten was going to continue to do. At this point in the season, Delhomme was the #3 fantasy QB in our league and 100% healthy. I am not saying that the opposing player should have accepted the deal, but it was a fair jumping off point for trade talks and the main motivation for me was to get LT.

He stated that he was not going to give up LT, which is fine and I respect that, but then he offered me this trade: Lee Evans and Phillp Rivers for Delhomme and Thomas Jones.

Now the point of my question is to simply ask which of these, if either, is borderline insulting. Of course I felt that I was getting the best of the deal I proposed, but I didn't think it was that bad and he desperately needed a QB plus was getting a decent replacement for LT. No one is LT, mind you, but I thought it was worth a shot and certainly not insulting. This other owner (not even the same one who I was dealing with) thinks my deal for LT was more insulting than the counter offer.

What say you? I usually don't bring stuff like this up here at the Huddle, but curiosity has gotten the better of me. Honest opinions welcome. I'm curious if I am way off on this one. :D

Trade 1

Slow start or not, LT was worth a lot more than you offered AND you wanted Whiten who if i remember correctly was a top 6-8 TE to begin the year and after week 3 was tearing it up. In return he gets a Good QB, a rookie rb(very risky) or a vet(who was injured and performing poorly) plus a throw in.

Trade 2

The same thing you said about witten could also be said about Delhomme (will he keep it up?). Rivers was rated top 10 to begin the year and after week 3 was only about 15 points behind delhomme. Jones and Evans were both fairly equal other than who you felt had the most upside and where your depth and needs were.

So i guess i'm going to side with trade #1 as being borderline insulting. Trade 2 depending on need was Ok

ps- Why did he desperately need a QB??? He had Rivers.

I would not consider either offer insulting. Now I am in fact insulted that my remote control's batteries have just died and Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason is stuck on my tv.

I dont think either are insulting, just trying to get what you want for as little as possible.

If I had to choose which would make me laugh more when I recieved It.Id go with #1.

But then again, without seeing his lineup and lineup needs or the rest of your roster its hard to be 100% sure of that.

No the offer is not insulting, you never know until you offer. I know very often, I will see a trade, and wonder what the individual was thinking that got porked. It never hurts to try and make a trade that is obviously in your favor. What U might think is in your favor, the other person might not. No offer 2 me is ever insulting, unless you are offering Chester Taylor for LT. That is unless the person you R offering it 2 is an obvious Minn. fan. The worst that can happen on a trade is it gets denied, you don't know unless you offer, and by the way, I would tell the other league mate to worry about his own team. Then I would offer him a kicker for one of his studs............................................

no such thing as an insulting trade offer, until the 3rd or 4th counter offer.

I always start out like that, just to see who will counter. Once they counter, you get a strong idea of what they're looking for and who they're low on.

I usually offer trades with players from the owner's homer team, and usually get a good response that way too.

I think both offers are fine, either as first offers, or counter offers, but if neither budged, and you kept offering trash for LT and Witten, then it would be just a waste of time.

Sure there is, but these aren't. If I'm offered next years 3rd round pick for LT I don't counter.

If this is the argument that is getting heated and has been going on since week 3... you both need to relax... there's just not much to get insulted/upset about with either of those offers. If the guys is being a dick about it, then just step back and ignore him for a while.

Exactly! Why waste mental energy fighting about a trade that never happened?

I'm discovering this year that there are some folks that it's just not possible to trade with. Any deal not heavily slanted in their favor doesn't look good enough. I'm not saying that's the case here necessarily, just that with some people, there isn't any point.

My standard response this year to bad trade offers is to send something back about how I think trades should benefit both teams, and I don't really see how what they offered benefits me... and leave it at that. There is zero advantage in getting angry about it.

Since I'm rambling anyway... it reminds me of another hobby of mine, pinball machines. They're collectible, in that certain ones are worth much more than others, and condition is key. Lots of times I see people posting machines for sale on craigslist or wherever, and their price is sky high! Hundreds to sometimes thousands of dollars higher than their "real value".

I used to send those people a polite email, pointing out that their price is probably out of line with current prices for what they have, and supply some links to the same machine for sale for much less.

After awhile, I stopped bothering. I realized that silence in response to their ad will probably get the point across.

FF trades and collectible values both have a large degree of subjectivity to them. If the potential trade partner or seller wants too much... smile and walk away. You'll find a better deal elsewhere with some patience.

I think the first offer you sent was insulting in the sense that it offered him little value in return for the #1 player drafted in almost all leagues. His response to your offer was much more fair than your offer. I would not personally still be having an argument with anyone several weeks after a turned down trade proposal though. At this point its beyond moot as Delhomme is out for the year and LT is back to being LT.

This is just something that came up over the last few days when I sent out a league wide email looking for a trade and jokingly called out that owner as an example of a weak offer. Little energy has been devoted to this beyond those past few days.

I guess the hard part I'm having with this is that it's easy to look at it now and say what a lopsided deal my trade offer was, but back then you really have to look to the future and the past (as opposed to the present) to justify he offer. It's a distant memory, but Delhomme was incredibly hot and Evans and Rivers were stinking up the joint (and still are). I am just having a hard time seeing how anyone would consider his offer to me as reasonable while my offer to him, at the time it was made, as borderline insulting.

The thing I keep on remembering is my willingness to negotiate, but once he said "I will not trade LT", the dealing was done. He was close to the worst team in the league and in desperate need for a QB and some depth. He's slightly better now (he beat me by less than 1 point the week we played), but I still am way better than him in season points so hopefully I'll have the last laugh. As for the owner who is now arguing with me-- 0-6. :D

I agree and that's where the disagreement happened. I was willing to negotiate a better deal as long as it included LT.

What he offered me was a back-up QB (for me it would have been) and a WR. I needed neither one of those things as I was set with Kitna, R. Williams, Coles, and Andre Johnson not to mention a couple other as-good as Evans WRs. He had nothing else to offer me beyond LT and Witten and when he showed no real interest in trading them, I moved on. My issue came about when my offer was deemed insulting and brushed off like I wasn't flexible and his deal was very fair so I should have taken it.

Oh. Well in that case you should knife the guy in the gut, next time you see him. Your honor demands it!
