As much as things change

Some of you know I am a bit of a statistic nut....

I have been looking at stats from 2002 thru week 7 of this season:

What I have found:

there have been 53,428 Pass Completions (not just by Manning/Brady)

there have been 76,698 Rushing Attemps

thats a total of 130,126 tackle opportunities (for IDP freaks)

but here is where it gets interesting:

AVERAGES/YEARYR Pass Completions Rush Attempts Total Tackle Opportunities07 20.44 26.89 47.3306 19.13 27.99 47.1205 19.10 27.99 47.0904 19.07 27.77 46.84 03 18.82 28.04 46.8602 20.00 27.20 47.20

What is crazy is that over the course of 2,766 games that tackle opportunities is a solid average of 47/game(lagest variance is 1%)

Pass Completions is 19 with the exception of this yr and 2002 where it was 20

Rushing Attempts were a solid average of 28/game of course except this yr and 2002 where its 27/game.

just thought it was pretty interesting that over such a large number of games the numbers are as consistent as they are.

I mention this phenomenon in my League Analysis and Graphing (LAG) because each year basically the same thing happens, it is just a question of who is doing it. There is amazing consistency from year to year for what is produced for the 5th WR each year or the 10th RB, etc.. The only play you ever seen any significant variation is in the top three players per position which will generally either have a very big year or a monster year.

It's just all about figuring out which names are going to be beside the numbers each year.

I realize this isn't necessarily the place for this question, but...

I've always wondered if a defender gets credit for a tackle if he pushes the ballcarrier out of bounds. :D Not sure why I haven't researched that before, but I thought I'd ask. :D

That is considered a tackle and is credited as such.

very interesting, as usual.

I'd really like to see the number of missed tackles alongside these stats. While you have to give credit for offensive players avoiding tackles, I've contended for a very long time that tackling in the NFL and even more so in College is dreadful across the board. The recent Rugby World Cup bears this view out entirely. Why is this?
