Steve Smith

Holy Hell

So much for ASS (Always Start Studs)

I had Welker on the bench thanks to SS I could lose a close one.

I know I should have gone with Welker but they have so many weapons, I mean Brady had 2 rushing TDs, Moss and Vrabl had one I didn't figure NE to score 50+ points either.

Yea, Smith is frustrating this year. I figured that Carolina would get behind and have to throw a lot in the second half. I didn't get to see the game but I hate to see my #1 draft WW put up a 1 point game (eventhough I would have lost this week regardless). Any homers have an idea of what is going on? Should we be sitting this guy more often with matchups? Old man testaverde seemed to hook up fine with SS the first week...whats the deal?

Steve Smith is not the type of WR that will get a lot of garbage time stats because he's not a possession type WR. If he doesn't hit on a few big plays every week, he's not going to be a very consistent FF option. That and his QBs are now named Testaverde and Carr.

Not a homer but was flipping back and forth to the game as a S. Smith owner. Carolina was effectively grinding the clock away playing ultra-conservative with the running game trying to keep Colts off the field, it worked very well for about one half.

When the Colts blew the game open the Panthers finally started playing catchup against a deep zone leaving the middle wide open for TE's and RBs.

I was at the game, but I think he will have had a decent day with Vinny still in there, but when he got hurt in the 2nd quarter, Carr came in and had a hard time finding SS. SS looked to be open a few times, but Carr looked very uncomfortable in the pocket and seemed to want to run the ball or check it down to the RBs or Jeff King. I am convinced that as long as Vinny is healthy, he should be the starter not Carr.

Anyway it was a frustrating day for the Panthers and will still be in flux until Fox decides who is going to be the starter if both guys are healthy.

Regardless of Smith's status as a stud WR he puts these stinkers up 2-3 times a season.

By my count in my league he has two 1 point games and one 3 point game. So that is his quota for the year and he had better not disappear again :D

The rest of the games he is putting up over 20 points/week. But two of those three he has killed me. Losing by less than 5 with your stud receiver putting up 1 point hurts. And I've got Reggie Wayne on the other side. I got lucky and snagged Dwayne Bowe off waivers and I'm wondering whether he should be my weekly starter. I think I hate Steve Smith :D

Where is Mr. Smith? The Panthers need to solve the mystery

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...

While the Indianapolis coverage scheme was a good one, it didn't hurt the Colts' defense that Smith went largely ignored by his own quarterbacks.

Carr in particular spent most of his two-quarter stint completing checkdowns and dump-off passes to tight ends and running backs. Of the 28 completions by the Carolina quarterbacks, only seven were to wide receivers, none for more than 15 yards. Tight end Jeff King had 10 receptions but averaged only 8.2 yards per catch, with a long of 12 yards.

Not surprisingly, Carolina head coach John Fox credited the Indianapolis defense for all but erasing his best offensive player.

"They play a lot of Cover 2," Fox said. "And once we lost the lead by as much as we did, they were able to sit in that, and then we had to throw into it … and that's not a pretty sight against anybody."

In truth, the Colts don't play nearly as much of the Tampa 2 coverage scheme as opponents insist, and that has been the case over the past couple seasons. Under coordinator Ron Meeks, and with the blessing of Tampa 2 architect and head coach Tony Dungy, the Colts align a lot in a Cover 3 look. But they did revert back to their Tampa 2 persona for Sunday, in large part because of Smith's presence.

...

His longest catch of the day, for 12 yards, actually came when he wasn't even lined up as a wide receiver. On a third-and-5 play on Carolina's opening possession, the Panthers came out in an "empty" formation, then shifted Smith into the backfield, as a tailback. He took a swing pass from Testaverde in the left flat and turned it upfield for a first down.

Smith's only other catch came on the first snap of the Panthers' second series, for 6 yards, and that was with 40 seconds left in the first quarter. After that, Smith never touched the ball again, and there were only two occasions on which the Carolina quarterbacks attempted to get him the ball more than 20 yards up the field.

"With them dropping off two or three guys, and playing deep, you just have to take the short, 10-yard throws sometimes," Carr said.

But not even many of those went in the direction of Smith on Sunday, and that will have to be addressed if the Carolina passing game is going to be productive the rest of the season.
