Coach scared = Marvin Lewis can't win

Marvin Lewis can't win a game coaching like he did yesterday.

My point:

4th and 1 at the 3 yard line in the 2nd quarter (down 14-3)

Kenny Watson can get 1 yard (or someone) can get 1 yard. if you can't get a yard go home and get some football players who can.

Marvin kicks a FG make it 14-6 and then gives up TD later making it 21-6 and basically the game is over.

Later in the game Marvin goes for it on 4th and 8 in the 3rd quarter

F-en Bengals make it on 4th and 8 and go on the score a TD too late.

The point of my rant is Marvin should know about his defence (are not going to shut out the steelers the rest of the game) and therefore he'll need more than 3 points. Also he was on the bloody gola line and Watson was running good and could have made 1 yard with ease (IMO).

I hate these coaches scared to make a mistake and will follow the accepted "take the points" rule all the way to a miserable record at the end of the year.

I agree. Gregg Easterbrook of Tuesday Morning Quarterback fame, makes some great points in his columns about coaches coaching not to lose rather than coaching to win. I think this is a prime example of that.

Actually they had 1st and 10 on the 11 and they couldnt score, they got it to the 2 and went for it on 4th down and the other team got offside or something so they had 1st and goal. They tried 3 more times and couldnt get in.

Pretty pathetic if you have 9 tries to get into the endzone from the 10 or closer and only get 3 from it.

Play calling was horrible also...very bad. Not to take away from Steelers D because they did great but the play calling sucked. He will get fired.

He also brings up good points about how some teams should probably never punt... with a D like the Bengals, I would probably never punt unless I were backed up inside my own 40 or so.

The sooner the opposing team gives it back (even if they score) the better with an offense, and defense, like the Bengals.

It came out bad, true. But I agreed with the call at the time, and still do. Take the points, make Pitt go the whole field to try and score, and get the ball first after half time. That Pitt scored 7 was a morale killer, true, but I still liked the call. Besides, even if the Bengals get 7 there, they still lose. Its 24-17 instead of 24-13. Big deal. They still lose.

As a Steelers fan, I came away from yesterday's win happy to get a road win against a division opponent, but, I wasn't thrilled. There are some positives.......Ben Roethlisberger is playing the best football of his career. He made one bad decision, trying to force things, but, other than that, I thought his play was outstanding. Willie Parker has become a very consistent back in this league. He keeps getting better and better. The Steelers now have legitimate, multiple receiving threats in Ward, Santonio, & Heath Miller, which makes their offense dangerous.

Now, to the bad news.....the Steelers offensive line is not that good. They allow tons of pressure on Roethlisberger, and it is Ben's incredible ability to avoid sacks that keeps their numbers from looking as bad as they should. Also, they aren't that great in run blocking. Most of Parker's 100 yard games have come from 2 or 3 big runs, rather than consistent gains like the Steelers used to get out of their running game. Two of Parker's good runs yesterday came when he bounced to the outside after there was no hole where he intended to go. I'm very disappointed with the Offensive line up to this point, and in a conference as tough as the AFC, it needs to improve if they want to give themselves a chance.

Defensively, I guess giving up 13 to the Bengals is a good thing, but, I wasn't happy. Obviously the Steelers were only putting 6 players in the box, to do are the Bengals to run, instead of letting Palmer/Housh/CJ beat them. That said, the Steelers tackling was terrible yesterday. If Kenny Watson doesn't get hurt, he breaks the Steelers streak of games without allowing a 100 yard rushers. In the first 5 games, I thought the Steelers defense had turned it up a notch and looked to be tops in the league. Over the last two games, some holes have emerged. Yesterday, they were failing to get pressure on Palmer, even when they blitzed, which surprised me, as the Bengals don't have a great offensive line against the pass rush. Overall, I was happy with the score, but, not thrilled with the way the defense played.

Maybe I'm being a little too tough on the Steelers at this point, but, in a conference that includes the Colts and Patriots, they need to get a lot better if they want to have any hope of winning it all.

:D

excerpt from :D

10 -- The Bengals only had 10 players on the field yesterday when they surrendered their 3-0 first quarter lead over the Steelers on a 21-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Hines Ward. On the positive side, only 10 Bengals defenders blew their assignment on the play instead of the usual 11. That's an improvement of nearly 10 percent.

I was thinking about Marvelous Marvin today at work. Really, there is no good reason for Cincy to keep him on as coach. He has shown no abillity whatsoever in taking that team to another level. Wasn't he the dude that masterminded the Ravens defense of 2000? Where did that guy go?

He seems to be one of those guys who is better off in the coordinator role. Just the fact that he can't control Chad Johnson from making an A$$ of himself on a weekly basis tells me that he isn't head coaching material. It's too bad, because they have a hell of a good qb in Palmer.
