URLACHERisGOD
Has anybody been able to find a wire thermometer with a digital read-out that is worth a hoot? I don't need anything fancy. Just something that will accurately tell me the temperature of the probe with at least a 14" or so wire. I've purchased a few from hardware stores and even stooped low enough to go to Linens-n-Things and none of the digital wire thermometers I end up with are even close to accurate after a use or two. Please help!

Chief Dick
I have a Pyrex Professional that has a digital readout and timer. You can set an alert with a set temp so when the meat reaches that temp it will go off. I use mine as a backup thermometer to check the temp in my smoker at the opposite end of the firebox. That way I can be sure my temp is equal throughout the whole smoker. Wire is about 36" long. Cost me about $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond. I've beat this thing around, left it in the rain overnight, dropped it... Been pretty solid. Edited October 30, 2007 by Chief Dick
SheikYerbuti
America's Test Kitchen rated the Taylor wireless as their best rated. I just recently bought the Taylor TruTemp, which has a wire. Got it at Target for just under $20. I've only used it once on a pork tenderloin, which has a very small window between raw and dried out. It came out just perfect. Don't know how it will stand up over 1000 uses, but so far so good. Atlanta Cracker
I have a Maverick that reads both smoker and food temp with a wireless unit you can take around the house. It works like a charm. It's strictly for smoking though and won't withstand temperatures above 400 or so and you may or may not need the smoker temp feature.
