After a mere 23 regular-season games as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, the bland persona and unimaginative strategies of coach Brad Childress hang over the team like a heavy fog. Childress seems a classic example of the "Peter Principle," which holds that "in a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." That point could fairly be labeled "the Childress Principle." Double ouch... Childress values his "system" to ludicrous extremes, drafting unpolished quarterback Tarvaris Jackson several rounds too early in 2006, and insisting that superstar rookie running back Adrian Peterson was the team's "No. 2 running back" the day after Peterson had the third-highest total yards in NFL history in a win over the Chicago Bears. His oddly inflated opinion of himself as coach and talent evaluator adds a surreal aspect to the Childress era. Pwnage... What were the warning signs that Childress was not head coaching material? First, he had never been a head coach on any level before being hired by the Vikings at age 49. In business terms, he had never previously had P&L (profit-and-loss) responsibility throughout his career. Secondly, a major credential of his was having been the Eagles offensive coordinator who "developed" quarterback Donovan McNabb into a superstar. But Childress, sources in Philadelphia made clear, did not call the offensive plays for the Eagles during games; head coach Andy Reid did. Buy up the increasing amounts of excess tickets to Vikings home games to prevent blackouts thereby delaying the growing probability of Childress' departure. The article includes this caveat... The opportunity to hire an executive who worked with an industry legend, like a coach associated with a famous football dynasty, must be examined carefully, not thoughtlessly acted upon. Reid fits into this description but it's worked out for him and the Eagles. The way you can really associate Childress with a football dynasty is through Reid by way of the Niners. While the Eagles have been good this decade, I'd hardly go far as to label them a dynasty. I also disagree that the Vikings organizations was in shambles before he arrived. They have a Pro Bowl caliber OL, good running game, good D... that describes quite a few other teams in the playoff hunt (TEN, JAX, SD, BAL, KC) and is the generic formula for success in the NFL. 3 out of 5 of those teams can't boast a decent passing game either. Let's say that the passing game is Childress' biggest failure. Well, the article mentions his "oddly inflated opinion of himself." That 'inflated opinion of himself' is what drew him to ACTIVELY pursue his sorry corps of WRs and egregious excuses for Pro QBs. The 2-5 record and a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory can be directly attributed to Childress' leadership, or lack thereof. They've lost to Detroit, GB, Dallas, Eagles, KC (a combined .686 winning %) by an average of 6 pts. Watching a few of those games and seeing how Childress calls a game, it almost seems like he'd rather lose than win in any other way that strays from HIS way. It's a classic case in how an otherwise talented team can be negated by a stubborn HC trying to fit square pegs into round holes. I like the hiring of Tomlin/Frazier because the D has been respectable since. Just to give some tiny credit. He has to be knocked for ignoring QB and WR all offseason. The Vikes really wanted Kevin Curtis, but when that didn't work out it got ugly with Wade next in line. Then the Vikes went out and gave V. Shiancoe (who?) huge money just to spend the minimum salary cap. This team has tons of salary cap space and chose to sit on it. Not even hand out any 1-yr contracts? Your opinion loses credibility with that statement. 74.4 rush ypg = 3rd 2.9 ypc = tied for 1st 19.6 ppg = 14th, factor in their 4 defensive TDs and the defense nets 15.6 ppg 18.5 yards per point allowed = 8th (better than TEN, TB, SD, NE, CHI, BAL, WAS, NYG) I like this one. It not only includes plays on defense but offense and special teams too... The all important "Big Play"... teams/coaches would kill for such a wide margin. Yet somehow the Vikings are 2-5. Could it be that the HC thinks his best RB is his 2nd RB and 1st kick returner? Could it be an offensive guru that gives his best RB 5 touches in their first drive then 8 in the remaining 3 quarters in a game that was tied until the end of the 3rd quarter? Could it be a mastermind talent scout that trades up to take Tarvaris Jackson 2-3 rounds too early, backs him up with Kelly Holcomb and Brooks Bollinger, and has them all throw to a WR corps with a combined pre-'07 reception total of 316 while letting his leading WR from '05 and '06 walk? Despite the lack of a consistent passing game and lackluster WR corps... TEN and JAX seem to do just fine. TEN and JAX are virtually carbon copies of MIN right now only in a tougher division AND conference yet manage to have the exact opposite record. Compare MIN to TB... TB has scored only 16 more points on the season and allowed 3 fewer points than MIN. Through 7 games, Childress, the offensive guru, is 16 points away from a very probable .500 record with wins over some very good teams. Check the play-by-plays in games like Dallas, KC, and GB and he left at least that many points on the field in those 3 games... either through game management/play-calling OR the lackluster inconsistent performance of the scrubs he assembled to execute his genius offense. Their pass defense is terrible, anyone saying this is a good defense is nuts, after the two defensive tackles, they have a great tackling corner and thats about it, safeties are old and the linebackers are average. that all said chilly has alot more to work with than tice ever dreamed of, they were 2-5 two years ago and end 9-7, no way chilly can rally these guys like that... Other then the QB, the Viking remind me a lot of the Eagles. Reid just made a great move drafting McNabb. Both defenses are solid in one aspect (Philly vs. pass / Vikings vs. run), both teams have questions at WR, both teams have top RBs. The Vikings organization remains in a shambles. About their only bright spot in year 2 of Pax Childress is they were drafting high enough to pick AD.
