McBoog
Peterson got his big carries after Luis Castillo got hurt and left the game. Without Castillo, SD is in trouble. Castillo went out. Phillips, who plays the same side by and large, did not play and Jammer generally lines up on that side and is a solid hitter for a DB also went out in the second half with a hammy. Watching that game, that side of the line was being pushed back three yards before Peterson had any traffic to deal with. Williams stood tall in the middle and Igor held his ground pretty well too. They just could not hold the left side of the defense and the coaches could not help them by scheming things up on the fly. Against the Vikings the Chargers allowed 73 yards on 18 runs with Castillo in and 305 yards on 25 runs after he left. With Castillo AND Phillips out, the dam broke! Castillo is supposed to be out for up to six weeks after surgery to repair his ankle! Edited November 7, 2007 by McBoog
Hat Trick
My bud Hat Trick thinks I was excited about Norv's hiring, but he was NOT my first choice (Ryan from Baltimore was). I just didn't think with the players that the Bolts have that ANYONE could actually break it and take the team to the playoffs. I was wrong. Here fishy fishy
pseudolefty
Peterson got his big carries after Luis Castillo got hurt and left the game. Without Castillo, SD is in trouble. Yes, Peterson had his big carries after Castillo left, but the Chargers weren't doomed soley by the loss of Castillo. It was a combination of factors. Here's how I see it: 1) Fatigue: The Chagers offense couldn't sustain a drive. The defense was on the field most of the second half and flat out got gased and it showed. 2) AP and Vikings O-Line: AP's a beast and the O-Line led by Hutchison and McKinney is pretty damn good. 3) Loss of Castillo and Jammer, combined with Phillips already sitting out: Castillo's solid against the run and pass. Jammer plays the run extremely well and is a great tackler. And with Shaun Phillips out, we definitely lost speed on the edge. Last year, we lost Castillo for around 6 weeks and the defense still held up ok. Merriman was out 4 weeks and the team went 4-0 in that stretch. Wade Phillips was able to mix-and-match and keep the defense together. I don't think Cottrell is anywhere near as creative and flexible with defensive schemes. Leadership and scheming are killing this team. That means coaching. Boy did I not see this one coming!
