Jackson 'feels good' after Rams' workout

Linehan is cautious about playing time

ST. LOUIS --The rest afforded by the bye week worked wonders on St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson's ailing back.

Jackson, who missed the final three quarters of the Rams' loss to the Cleveland Browns prior to their week due to an injury that was later diagnosed as a bulging disc in his back, was able to practice with the Rams' starting offense on Wednesday.

"I feel pretty good," Jackson said. "I got out there and practiced with the guys, and everyone is pretty upbeat."

It appears that Jackson will start against the New Orleans on Sunday at the Superdome.

"I went full-go today, and that's a huge step," Jackson said. "Hopefully, all week I can participate in practice and be a part of the game plan."

Rams coach Scott Linehan downplayed Jackson's availability against the Saints. He said that if Jackson does play against the Saints, he probably won't be getting a full load of carries.

"He looked good, but again he's still not 100 percent," Linehan said. "If we could get a certain amount of plays and having him ready for Sunday, it would be beneficial for us. We're planning on it that way."

Jackson said he was unaware of whether his playing time would be cut back against the Saints.

"I don't know," Jackson said. " I'm just going to play."

Jackson said his back got better simply through rest during the bye week.

"It locked up on me during the game, and that week off really allowed it to heal itself," Jackson said.

Jackson said he was surprised when an MRI on his back revealed the bulging disc.

"Very shocked," Jackson said. "I didn't think the injury was going to be that severe. We went in at halftime and started trying to loosen it up. I should have known it was something serious when it just wouldn't quite act right. Once we got the results from the MRI, it really explained a lot why I was unable to go back in and play."

Bulging discs usually develop over time, yet Jackson said he didn't know how he injured his back, or how he suffered a partially torn groin muscle earlier this season.

"The two injuries I've had this season are things that just happen out of the blue," Jackson said. "I can't quite put my finger on why either injury happened."

Jackson was relieved that his back got better without an injection.

"A lot of the experts were leaning towards injecting the disc and I kind of shied away from that," Jackson said. "I wanted to allow it to take the natural course. I did a lot of praying on it and I just kind of wanted to stay away from the needle."

Jackson said a bulging disc isn't the kind of injury that automatically sidelines a player.

"A lot of guys actually play with a bulging disc," Jackson said. "I don't know if you know this, but Brian Leonard actually had one in the preseason. It's just one of those things we have to let it calm down, and then you're able to play."

Jackson said he'll have to be careful with his back the rest of the season.

"It's definitely something I'll have to manage the rest of the season," Jackson said.

The Rams jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter against the Browns prior to Jackson's injury.

"He was a great spark for us," Linehan said. "That was our best quarter of football to this point in the season."

Rams tight end Randy McMichael said that Jackson was running "like a wild beast" against the Browns.

"I just think I was fresh," Jackson said. "I do like that (statement), and hopefully I can bring that same intensity for four quarters on Sunday."

Jackson will be running against a Saints defense that currently ranks 10th in the NFL against the run. They're allowing 96.9 rushing yards per game.

"Their defensive line is pretty intense, led by (defensive end) Will Smith, so we're going to have to try to contain him," Jackson said. "We're going to have to make plays. Their secondary is pretty solid. We're just going to have to go out there on the road, and it's going to be a tough one to get, but each game from here on out is going to be tough. A lot of teams are trying to position themselves for the hunt. We're going to have to go in there and execute."

This will help. From Rotoworld

Saints DE Charles Grant (ankle) will not play in Week 10.

The Saints considered using Grant in certain situations, but have decided instead to rest him against the 0-8 Rams. New Orleans' depth at end behind Grant and Will Smith is poor, so St. Louis' offensive attack as a whole gets an improved fantasy matchup. Either Renaldo Wynn or Josh Cooper will fill in.

i had a bulging disc a couple months ago. not fun. you gotta be very careful with back injuries. this could be a problem for him again at any time, especially this soon after he initially did it

i'm also very surprised a guy as young as him would have this problem.
