policyvote
Happy Thanksgiving--to everyone, and to all of your families. Today is an extra-special day to us Lions fans. Not only is it a wonderful time of eating and drinking and being with family, but it's also the only day of the year we get to be in the national spotlight. Every year the calls go out to take this game away and spread it around--but it started with the Lions in 1934, and as far as I'm concerned it needs to stay with the Lions as long as men are paid to play football. Fans today forget that this game has been played for far longer than most of us have been alive. While baseball unnecessarily leans on the past, the NFL actively ignores its history. I mean, just watch the talking heads on TV debate about the "greatest ever"s: Tom Brady or Joe Montana? LaDanian Tomlinson or Emmitt Smith? It's like people think pro football is about as old as Def Leppard. I don't know about you guys, but some of my most cherished childhood memories were watching the Lions on Turkey Day. I remember sitting at the dining room table with the whole extended family, and all the men taking turns leaning way back in our seat to get a clear view of the TV in the other room (and trying not to let Grandma catch us). Going into the kitchen for "seconds", taking ten minutes, and coming back with only the score. Arguing with my grandfather over whether or not Scott Mitchell is a "lousy bum" ( ). Thrilling as Barry Sanders or Lomas Brown or Luther Ellis won the Turkey Leg yet again, and jeering as opposing players won that stupid iron, or robot turkey, or whatever the heck they came up with after Madden left. For that matter, almost having all eleven courses come up in a rush as I watched Madded manually dissect a turducken with his bare, nasty hands. Today, as you're sipping a tasty beverage, trying to figure out how you can get fourths down the gullet, play with the kids, have the kids play on you, or whatever, watch the Lions-Packers game. Remember that your father did, too, and so did his father, and maybe even his father did too. Enjoy the game, enjoy the food, but most of all, enjoy your family. Thank you, and God bless. ts
Not to date myself, but I still have vague memories of watching this game with my Dad & wondering why all those players in blue & white kept getting knocked down so fast by the players in green & white: Nov. 28, 1968 - The Lions fell to Philadelphia, 12-0, in the "Mud Bowl" at Tiger Stadium, the lowest scoring game in Detroit's Thanksgiving Day series. The Eagles scoring resulted from four Sam Baker field goals as the two teams played poorly on offense, combining for 329 yards. Greg Landry was intercepted three times -- twice in the third quarter -- as Philadelphia limited Detroit to 66 yards through the air. splotchman
Who knew Brett's middle name was Roy? Nice call. Was hoping some positive reinforcement would get Mr.Williams some TDs. Was forced to start him since S.Holmes is out... Hurry back "Sanantonio"!!!
