Why is it a record passing year?

It looks like 5-7 QB's will throw for 30+ TD's this year barring injury. Another 2-3 could hit 25+ TD's. Do defenses suck? Has there been rule changes? I don't EVER recall that many QB's having so much success. The funny thing is there are also A LOT of bad QB's in the NFL right now that shouldn't be starters. It seems like the top tier guys are killing it and the rest just suck. What the heck is going on? RB's are being over shadowed in fantasy this year.

Along with the new and improved athletic TE the trend to spread the field with multiple receivers has been growing pretty rapidly in college and the pros. More and more coaches are realizing that defenses don't have the speed to cover all those receivers unless they go nickel or dime all the time which of course would make them vulnerable to the run. It used to be a no brainer that you would use the run to open up the passing game but it's often employed in reverse now. I think it's a cyclical thing. If Ds adjust we will will see the run come back more and Os become more balanced.

Offenses have adjusted to the cover 2 and todays standard blitzes. The momentum is just the offense's way right now. In a few years, some defensive gurus will come up with ways to stifle this version of the passing game and the numbers will drop. Conventional defenses can't stop the modern passing game.

when teams adjust to the pass next year, then we'll have RB's go nuts...

I always try to stay ahead of the curve...and next year I'll go heavy on RB's so I have some strong bargaining chips...

but you still have to try and get a decent QB to start with...along with a WR or two.....but hopefully if I go strong with RB's...I'll have 3 startable RB's and be able to add a stud QB via trade after a few weeks and we get an idea of who's doing well and who I can buy low on possibly...

There has to be more to it. Spread formations and athletic TE's are nothing new to defenses. I want to point out that offenses are not unstoppable this year obviously. There are a ton of QB's out there having serious probems. On the other hand, the top tier QB's are making it look easy.
