Miami-Dade detectives have detained two teenagers and a man in his 20s in Lee County for questioning in the death of Washington Redskins football star Sean Taylor.

Investigators believe the young men learned of Taylor's house through someone who unwittingly set up the burglary by bragging about the football star's wealth.

The suspects include 17- and 19-year-olds and a 26-year-old. All hail from the Fort Myers area.

The former University of Miami star was not supposed to be home at the time of the break-in. While the Redskins played in Tampa, he had come home to get a second medical opinion on his injured knee.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents and at least two Miami-Dade homicide squads have been in Fort Myers and they picked up the young men Friday morning.

Taylor was shot early Monday by an intruder who surprised him in the bedroom of his Palmetto Bay home.

Taylor wielded a machete as he tried to protect his fiancée, Jackie Garcia, and their 18-month-old baby girl. The two were hiding under the covers as Taylor was shot.

One bullet pierced the wall. The other struck Taylor in the groin, severing his femoral artery and causing massive blood loss. He died at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Richard Sharpstein, a former Taylor lawyer and family friend, said: "It looks like the police are pursuing extremely good leads. It appears that the burglary was exactly as I've always stated, not random, that Sean's house was targeted."

Well, that would contradict what other players (Rolle, for example) have said in that it was not a burglary, but instead an attempted assult on Taylor.

I think their point was the police said it was "random", which Rolle took offense to.

It was was a burglary, but it wasn't random, he was targeted. From the AP story linked in the post above.....

"......the suspects learned of Taylor's house through someone who unwittingly set up the burglary by bragging about his wealth."

There might not be the link to the wrong people in his past, as some had originally thought, but it wasn't random.

From what I've read though, it seems like Taylor was actually targeted though, not for just a burglary, but for being shot at (but maybe not actually killed). I guess the door to the room was locked after Taylor and his fiancée heard the intruder. I've never broke into a house before to steal something, but if I did, and I knew the occupants might be home, I would have tried not to make any noise, let alone kick in a door that was locked.

If true and if these guys were "tipped" that he was wealthy and that is why they broke in, it would really put to bed all the false discussions that some have deemed necessary to discuss about "Taylor's past coming back to haunt him, since he was a thug and was killed for revenge".

We don't know yet, and that's the point. Jumping to conclusions, especially when they end up being completely wrong, is foolish.

Speculations and conclusions are two different things, but I get your point. :D

I haven't seen a picture of the house, but I can imagine that robers wouldn't need a tip to realize that whoever owned it had money. No?

I see where you're trying to go with this, but for me, having those speculations strike his teammates as credible seems to indicate such talk wasn't foolish, it just happened to not be the case ... sounds like somebody got to him randomly before somebody else did intentionally -- given the break in 8 days prior where nothing was taken but a knife was left on the bed ... This will make a great movie someday ...

Not really much of a house to be honest and a bit older in nature and wear.but a nice home none the less.. He did have a nice open fisherman boat and a few cars....but nothing special..I think it was purchased at 900,000...He had a few or most of the windows boarded up at the time with acoardian style hurricane shutters....oddly enough we have not had a hurricane in over 2 years....I personally live in an area that has a few of the Fins and retired other various ath and entertainment type....now those homes are nice...but we are talking well over a mill...buy all accounts he did not live on the hill. Regular folk....Even though it was Miami...it was not on the ocean as Shaq or Gloria Estefan. which are valued well into the 10 mil + .

So I don't know about realizing it had money written all over it....it cert. was not in an exclusive area or hot spot. but an older home..an American Dream.

I cert. hope they get whomever was responsible for this....if truly a random act, then even more senseless......I am sorry for the loss to his family....he did live differently from how I live....If you want to call it thug...so be it...I refer to it as "living differently from the way my family lives".....

Does anyone think all the EX UM guys will come out big this weekend?

Miami-Dade investigators believe some of the young men that were detained for questioning in connection with Sean Taylor's death Friday had attended a party at Taylor's home recently.

This just about goes along exactly with what Antrel Rolle has been saying - that Taylor was a marked man and killed by people who knew him. No charges have been filed in the case, and the three man remain in custody.

Appears Rolle may have been dead on, and Taylor's past is what led to his death

Four arrested in connection with shooting death of Redskins star Taylor

MIAMI - The Miami-Dade Police Department arrested four people Friday in connection with the shooting death of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor.

Police spokeswoman Linda O'Brien identified the men as: Venjah K. Hunte, 20; Eric Rivera Jr., 17; Jason Scott Mitchell, 17; and Charles Kendrick Lee Wardlow, 18. O'Brien said the charges for each had not yet been determined, but "we are talking murder and burglary."

The four men were arrested Friday in southwest Florida, about 160 kilometres from Miami. They will be booked into the Lee County Jail and eventually will be returned to Miami, she said. O'Brien did not have any information on when they would appear in court or if they had lawyers.

Taylor died Tuesday, one day after being shot at his home in an affluent Miami suburb during what officials said appeared to be an attempted burglary. The suspects weren't expecting Taylor to be home, police director Robert Parker said, but Taylor was recuperating from a knee injury and had returned to Miami from Washington.

"They were certainly not looking to go there and kill anyone," Parker said. He added authorities had more than one confession but would not elaborate.

"We're looking into whether or not one or more of the individuals had been at the residence before," Parker said.

The Miami Herald reported investigators believe the men learned of Taylor's house through someone who unwittingly set up the burglary by bragging about Taylor's wealth.

Taylor and longtime girlfriend, Jackie Garcia, were awakened early Monday by loud noises at Taylor's home, family friend Richard Sharpstein said. Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection, Sharpstein said, then someone broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor in the upper leg. Neither the couple's 18-month-old daughter, also named Jackie, nor Garcia were injured.

The bullet damaged the femoral artery in Taylor's leg, causing significant blood loss. Taylor never regained consciousness and died a little more than 24 hours later.

A public viewing for Taylor is scheduled Sunday in Miami, and the entire Redskins organization plans to fly to Florida to attend Monday's funeral at Pharmed Arena at Florida International University.

The Redskins also announced that fans attending the team's Sunday game will receive a towel with Taylor's No.21 jersey on it and that his name will be displayed prominently in one of the end zones. Team owner Dan Snyder said in a statement the team will contribute a minimum of US$500,000 to a fund to benefit Taylor's daughter.

Associated Press Writer Brian Skoloff in West Palm Beach, Damian Grass in Miami, and AP Sports Writer Joseph White in Ashburn, Va., contributed to this report.

It seems likely that Sean Taylor was murdered bv a few f-ups who were looking to make a score at a rich athlete's home.

Considering that hardly anybody even knew he was home, this is not exactly shocking. To call the media shameless in their speculation regarding his death is quite charitable. As someone with a journalism degree, I am completely disgusted by these so-called professionals.

He was probably the most talented defensive player to come out in the past decade. But more importantly, he should be remembered as a man who died protecting his family.

The UMiami PR office couldn't have stated it better. Given your journalism degree, you have the insights to ignore his teammates who spoke out about this being tied to Taylor's criminal past. The rest of the media should have known better ...

We will have to watch the movie to find out why the random burglars bothered kicking in a locked door to kill him once they figured out he was home and armed -- rather than just leaving him locked in the room, taking a TV, and making a clean getaway... Plus, it will be interesting to see what they do with the break in 8 days before where nothing was taken but a knife was left on the bed ... that was likely more random f-ups, too, but how will the UMIami folks work that in? Wonder if ESPN will beat LIFETIME to the TV rights to the movie?

Enough banging of that drum. It's as senseless as the poor guy's killing. The real tragedy in all this is that one more child will grow up with out a father and with a momma that her daddy never bothered to marry. :D

The cops caught the right guys. The only question now will be intent. The guilty will prefer the jury to believe the murder was a burglary gone bad. However, I have never heard of burglars kicking down a bedroom door once they figure out a home is occupied instead of empty. These guys could have grabbed and gone. Instead they forced their way into Sean's bedroom and shot him. That seems like intent to kill, not manslaughter. A.Rolle is still right, IMO.

Almost all these punks had connections to Sean - one guy cut his grass, another guy was a cousin of a boy that dated his sister. It is just sick. In any case, Sean Taylor did not bring this on himself, even if he should have separated himself further from his "hood." A truly horrifying situation. I hope these guys all get the death penalty rather than skate by with a BS manslaughter charge.
