FA acquisitions during the playoffs...

I know many leagues hold consolation playoffs (Toilet Bowls) for teams that don't make the regular playoffs, and many leagues also still hold FA during these periods. Just trying to get your opinion of the ethics of picking up players if you don't make the regular playoffs.

For myself, if I don't make the regular playoffs, I don't pick up any players until after the main FA period in order to give the owners who do make the playoffs their best chance of getting help/backups for their teams. And if there's only one FA period, than I just suck it up and go with the current players that I already have. I think this is the most ethical choice by any non-playoff owner. I realize many leagues have some small payout for the Toilet Bowl winner, so there's still that goal of a monetary payout...what's your thinking and how do you handle this?

I try and remain competetive each week, and if that involves some waiver-wire or free agency because I have a toilet bowl game, so be it. Has never occured to be to leave people in the pool for other play off teams, after all, I'm still fighting for the best final ranking like they are.

None of my leagues allow pickups during the playoffs. But if there's ANY stake involved for the other teams, why not allow pickups (ethically)?

In my local, the toilet bowl loser gets made fun of for the entire offseason. For that reason alone I would think that he/she should try as hard as possible not to lose.

in the HAG leagues there is a payoff for the consolation bowl, so I don't see a problem allowing people to manage their team to pick up FA's in pursuit of that payoff.

In my local, there is a tournament by the bottom half of the draw for the top pick in next year's draft. We have to let those people pick up FAs in pursuit of that goal.

In one of my dynasty leagues, FAs can benefit long term, so you can't keep people from picking them up there.

If there is nothing for them to gain, then they should not be allowed to make the pick-up.

I would agree with you in a keeper/dynasty league...but if you are playing for say $50 for the TB in a redraft league as compared to other owners playing for $500, then I think the honorable thing to do is take your lumps and give the playoff teams at the very least the first chance at the FA pool...JMHO

This came up in my BOTH league today. In all of my other money leagues once you are eliminated from playoff contention (or get beat in the playoffs) you can no longer add/drop. However in my BOTH league today every team was able to add/drop when waivers ran even if they were not in the playoffs.

The point I brought up was (not that I expect it to happen) you run the risk of someone saying hey, since you are my friend will you pick up player X so another guy I'm playing in the playoffs doesn't get them. You also run the risk of a team that is elminated dropping a quality player into the FA pool.

In a keeper/dynasty (especially dynasty - shouldn't be any keepers on the waiver wire at this point), it's a bit of a tricky question.

In a redraft, I'd definitely say only the playoff teams can pick up once the reg season is over regardless of if there's a toilet bowl. Toilet bowl is for the worst teams to figure out who's really the worst - stick with what got you there, but more impt let the best teams fight out the impt stuff.

If you mean doing waivers for week 14 (reg season), then it's fair game for everyone definitely.

Next year we'll set up a roster freeze for the playoffs for Faultline :D

IMO, pick up any FA you want as you are still playing for a prize.

Well that'd be pretty shady by some huddlers to do that sort of thing. I know in all 4 of my BOTH leagues I respect every individual and would not expect something like this to occur, nor would it even cross my mind that it would happen. I guess if it looks questionable then it probably is. I could see where this would play out, I just wouldn't expect to see it.

Our league cuts off waivers and trades 3 weeks before our playoff starts. The reasoning is so there is no collusion between teams. You ive with what you got, and you better have set yourself up nicely. The weaker teams usually fade in the stretch because of this.

Personally, I don't mind have waivers up to the playoffs, but our rules has been in effect for a LONG time, and everybody just deals with it.

Hell, because of it, I'm looking at possibly not making it to our Super Bowl after going 10-3 up to this point. Thankfully, I got myself a bye in the first round. Maybe it sill be enough time to get my recently injured players back. I guess my point is.... :D

it's a double edged sword??
