Uphill battle for Coles

By Tom Rock

There are two grass practice fields in the back of the Jets complex, and between them is a short hill. Had this been the week the Jets travel to Dallas, I might call it a grassy knoll. But we’ll call it a hill for now. Anyway, between drills players often trot up and down depending on which field they need to be on. Laveranues Coles had to go up the hill today. It was not easy to watch. The gutsy receiver could barely make it to the top. It was like watching those guys on “Everest: Beyond the Limit” on the Discovery Channel try to pull themselves to the summit. Only Coles is a professional athlete and his slant was about six feet high.

Coles had trouble walking through the locker room. After playing on Sunday, a chore that likely required him to take a shot of painkiller (he would not answer that question), Coles may be in worse condition than he was leading up to Miami. He said it was the worst he’s ever felt for a game he played in, and said his ankle was in tremendous pain when he was lining up. Once the ball was snapped, though, he tried to block it out. He made five catches, three of them converting third downs into firsts.

At practice, Coles was very limited, though he did manage to take part in some footwork drills between receivers and corners. But he spent most of the time standing in the snow flurries with his hands in his pouch.

Per KFFL...

Jets | Coles expected to play Week 14

Wed, 5 Dec 2007 14:31:41 -0800

J.P. Pelzman, of The Bergen Record, reports New York Jets WR Laveranues Coles (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 5, and is expected to play Week 14 but may be limited.

Geez... in my IDP dynasty, I have Fitz, Roy W, and Santonio... I sure as hell hope Coles can play.

Huddle Priority News email this morning says this:

"Jets WR Laveranues Coles is expected to sit Sunday when the N.Y.Jets battle the Cleveland Browns due to an ankle injury that continues to hamper him."

That doesn't mean he's been ruled out, but it's about as close as you can get I suppose.

As an NFL fan, you have to love Coles' heart and determination to grit it out for a 2-9 team last week. As a FFL coach, it drives you nuts that he basically played before he should have, made his ankle worse, and likely ruined any chance he has of producing significant numbers during the FFL playoffs. If anyone can play through this and produce, it's Coles. But it doesn't sound promising.

the coles rollercoaster continues...

Laveranues Coles (ankle) reportedly limped "significantly less" Thursday than he did during Wednesday's practice. Coles will likely be limited in practice and listed as "questionable" on the injury report Friday, but he's looking more likely to play against Cleveland now. Still, we won't know for sure until just before game time

If both Coles and Fitz are out, having already lost Roy, we'd have to start Welker , James Jones :D and Drew Bennett :D at WR in our second week of WCOFF finals. Oy vey.....

Kiss that championship bye bye if that happens.

Damn thurs games! Local lineups lock at the beginning of the thurs night game. Have to sit Holmes for this reason and now Coles too! :D:D:wacko:

It's not the Thurs. games that are the problems - it's the silly league rule that doesn't allow changes beyond the 1st game of the week.

Blame yourselves.

Just what up with Coles...seriously is DMD going against a guy with Coles or something...

Coles was limited in both practices and like was posted above, he'll likely end up as a gametime decision.

OK, so now he's listed as questionable in the Fantasy section of NFL.com. Any other solid news out there? Because he and Fitz are both questionable, I may be looking at sitting them and using Gonzalez against the Ravens. And its round 2 of the playoffs! And I just lost Bush! But I did get Lynch back.

Same situation instead of Gonzalez, I have to choose between J. Jones & B. Smith. Since they are both late games I'm going to wait and see the inactive list then decide. If they are both out I will use B. Smith. and I have Stecker to replace Bush.
