budlitebrad
Smith has 2,448 yards going into UCF's bowl game against Miss St. and only needs 180 yards to break Sanders' record of 2,628. He's averaging 188, so it's definitely possible. If it happens, would you view him as the single-season record holder, even though the NCAA did not include bowl game statistics when Barry played? Barry had over 200+ yards in the 1988 Holiday Bowl, so Smith would need 400+ to surpass that total. IMHO, I would still say that Barry has the record. budlitebrad
Also, Sanders record is from 11 regular season games. Smith will have 14 games total (12 regular, conf. championship, bowl game).

IMO all college records should be retroactively determined on a per-game basis. And how hard would it be to get official box scores for old bowl games, so that if they are going to count those for a player's season total that it is at least equal across the board? NCAA = morons. That said, hats off to Kevin Smith for having one HELL of a season. Statistical quibbles aside, he has had a terrific year and should be proud. budlitebrad
What's ridiculous is that he wasn't even a FINALIST for the Doak Walker award. I mean, I know they want to give some credit to guys like Hart and Rice for career performance, but Smith ran for twice as many yards as Hart did I think. What makes it worse is that he is already on several All-America teams, he and McFadden. Doesn't that mean they're the two best in the country? Or at least close? Puddy
No way I'd consider him the record holder playing in fewer games.
GWPFFL BrianW
And conference championship games aren't all about the money? Can you imgaine the hype machine if this was Darren McFadden, or pretty much any other running back from a bcs conference? "Watch this Saturday night as xxx and xxx play for the SEC title, and see if xxx can break Barry Sanders' record!" I'm guessing the words, in 13 games wouldn't be in that line when hyping the football game.
detlef
NCAA = morons. Seems to be a reoccurring theme. Once again, product on the field... excellent However, essentially everything the suits have any control over... lame.

It simply makes no sense to award a winner if they had more opportunities. Long live Babe....
