Vick's letter to the judge prior to sentencing

Just for some insight into Vick, and because it's Friday, here's a link to Vick's handwritten note to the judge prior to his sentencing as well as some excerpts (the note is hand-written):

link

Chosen excerpts:

"Growing up in Newport News, I was exposed to numerous illegal activities and dogfighting was one of them. I never understood why people arrested for guns and drugs, but never for dogfighting...

You honor, I grew up loving animals and still to this day. I have Paso Fino horses, parrots, fish tanks, and Lizards. I take full responsibility for my actions and am ashamed that my actions hurt animals and allowed animals to be hurt and killed.

Your Honor, I am not the bad person or the beast I've been made out to be. I've been talked about and ridiculed on a day to day basis by people who really don't know Michael Vick the human being. They only knew the football player which is unfair. I'm a very humble, soft spoken, and caring guy. Also kinda shy. I'll do anything for anyone and often have a hard time saying no....

I have accepted responsibility for my actions and I felt that turning myself in early my family, freinds, and the world that I have accepted responsibility and was willing to pay my debt to society. It hurts deeply because jail is no place for me and its hard for me to adjust in here, knowing that I've left my family behind...

I apologize for my failed drug test. I was suffering from a deep state of depression, and after my father attacked me in the media, I was heartbroken. I expected nothing but support from him; however he was trying to get money from me and threatened to do A tell-all story on me...

Throughout this case I've tried to be honest...

Your honor, I have no problem paying restitution for the dogs as I believe they should have a good life as well. All the dogs were in good health and I've always made sure of the continuous upkeep of the dogs and all my animals.

One of the many hard lessons I have learned is that talent is a responsibility not just a privlege. I have though a Lot about the fact that If I had not allowed my money to be used, I would not be in trouble. I am. I PROMISE that I will never again use a single dollar that I have earned for anything but to help people."

"Throughout this case I've tried to be honest..."

He may tried but time after time he didn't succeed. Smoking pot may have been what did him in.It was done at a time he needed to show he changed but again failed to show respect for the law and the court.

I don't think he's a terrible person but did bankroll this and lied about it to the team and authorities. I hope he takes responsibility now. Saying you accept responsibility isn't the same as actually doing it.

I really like where he repeatedly states that he has accepted responsibility and then proceeds to throw blame everywhere but himself for both the dogfighting & the failed drug test.

I also like where he offers restitution for the dogs because they should have good lives too - I guess except the dogs hooked to the rape stands and those dogs already maimed & killed in the fights or that he & his homies killed after fights...

This is a letter I would expect from a 1st grader, not a grown man about to spend a significant stretch in jail.

I wouldn't have expected he could write that many words in a row.

What a joke. Clearly his definition of "love animals" and the rest of the worlds' is vastly different. I think he meant to say he loved the attention and money generated by running a dog fighting business ... and he loved the feeling of power he got when he killed dogs off (in rather inhumane ways) that under performed.

Nobody that loves animals would anything to do with dog fighting ... period.

He "accepts responsibility" but doesn't want to go to jail. :D

:D Does he really believe that we believe he was trying to be honest? He did everything in his power to reveal as little as possible. He lied on a daily basis. I guess his attempts at honest were about as successful as his attempt at being an NFL QB.

I was thinking about this last night (why, I have no idea). One thing I realized i don't get - if Vick and crew were so "cooperative", why isn't there a huge 300 person takedown going on at this point. Vick was just one kennel owner - from what I know (and admittedly, it's very limited) his dogs were fighting other kennels in staged events....so with Vick's and his buddies cooperation, shouldn't they have been able to take down all kinds of dog fighters on the east coast?

i've wondered that myself too, but I don't recall the details ass to whether their were outside dogs involved or just people betting on Bad News Kennel dogs that fought against each other. Either way, not letting all of that out would probably spare his life and he's surely not that dumb.

I wished he got a longer sentence. He is an idiot - Plain & Simple. Its sad to say, but I hope his kids see him for what he is. A wate of talent.

You want to be a good father than lead by example. I would say I hope he turns life around, but in reality I really don't care what happens to him. There are a lot of people that struggle to put food on the table for their family, but they don't become criminals. He could have had it all and he threw it away.

RIJ - Rot in Jail.

His little brother threw it all way first.

I thought it would be interesting to see if I could read this entire thing w/o vomiting.

By the time I hit "I love animals" I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

Pls let the next story about Vick being that he got the Shawshank Sister Treatment and/or will be eating his dinner through a straw for life.

Exactly.

PS he DID have it all (well except for legit QB talent) and threw it all away. In spades.

Being an idiot isn't against the law. I think the judge handled this well. Now it's up to Vick. His brother and Claret also threw everything away.

If you're famous and going to prison, you're saying you should rat out everyone? Brilliant!

Well he DID only have two years of college. Maybe VaTech's remedial English classes were booked up.
