All is quiet on the Matt Millen front

Typically at this time of year, the Fire Millen ® protests are in full swing. This year they are noticeably absent - despite the fact that: 1) this team is worse than last years team; 2) this year's draft was another failed draft (at least it appears that way at the moment); and 3) it looks pretty clear that next years team is going to be worse than this one.

There is nothing to build on. The Lions aren't even close to being set at a position other than WR. Marinelli is not a good coach. Martz is gone (which may not be a bad thing).

Apparently, beating 6 of the dregs of the NFL early in the year gets this chump a pass.

Just when I think that it can't get any more embarassing to be a Lions fan.

I really do think Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson will be a feared duo once a real QB come to the Lions.

I think your Defense improved and you do have a better team than last year. The O Line is in serious question but I feel that the problems lie with Kitna. He sucks and gets sacked like crazy. They really need to get rid of him.

An improved O-line would keep Kitna from throwing on the run and/or in three step drops all game long. He probably wouldn't suck as much then. As for the original post, Detroit has a chance to go 8-8 this year, but even 7-9 isn't regression for this team. I also think that the Lions are getting too much credit for almost beating Dallas (as if somehow a moral victory means something). But they didn't win seven games last year, so I'm not surprised if the improved record is succesfully creating the facade of an improved team.

It would be nice to see the Lions actually fill needs in the upcoming draft, but I've learned to have no faith in management making prudent decisions to improve the overall team.

See, I think that you're getting sucked in by the record.

The defense is terrible. Detroit has the worst overall defense in the league. They have given up the most points and the most yards per game. Earlier in the year they were creating turnovers, but that dried up as the season went along, and they started playing better teams.

Offensively, the Lions moved up a couple notches statistically. But they were middle of the pack in total points and only 2 teams rushed for fewer yards.

I guess that if you just look at the record, you'd have to say that this years team is better. But its not. Decent QBs carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey. They have no CBs to speak off. The defensive and offensive lines are jokes. Outside of WR, this years Lions are not better off than last year's at any position. Kitna is Kitna - last year was his "career year" with the Lions. This team has mailed it in - yet again. And there is no legitmate hope for improvement next year. None.

I started to write something else, but I can't put it in words. I'm apathetic about my apathy.

I said it when Petrino split on the, and now in the wake of Parcels pulling the old Charlie Brown field goal move on Atlanta, we will sacrifice our love for confusion and donate Matt Millen to the ATL football disaster relief fund.

I love the Lions' QB situation. Let Kitna take some lumps while the kids get their experience & Stanton sits and learns. The WR duo will be in prime form just as Stanton is entering the years where his head catches up to his arm & his demeanor. If they can put a couple of very good O-linemen and a good RB into the formula in the next couple of years before they turn Stanton loose, this could be a very scary O.

It will take a couple of more years, though.

He could not install the "GSOT" with the players he had. It worked once and, just like all other things in the NFL, coaches figured it out. I mean seriously, I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with CJ and Roy but they are not precision route runners like Ike and Tory were for him from 99 to 02. Warner is by far better than anything Detroit has had, and NO ONE is Marshall Faulk. With that said, I feel for Detroit fans cause I put up with his silly @ss, 7 step drop and let my QB get mauled approach here in STL for his miserable final years.

Well, Roy only has one year left on his contract; he becomes an unrestricted free agent going into the 2009 season. So, there's no guarantee he'll be around if/when Stanton is ready. I'm not convinced that Stanton is the QB of the future anyway. The Lions spent an early 2nd round pick on him, so I guess he is right now. Personally, I don't think he's going to pan out and I didn't like the pick when they made it.

and I'm sooo sick of seeing seven step drops. I was wary of Martz coming here in the first place, in my mind it would have only worked if there was a strong HOF-type coach already in place to reel him in when he gets out of control. Rod just gave him the keys and this is what you get.

I more or less agree. Not sure if Stanton can be good (or at least "good enough") but a better OL would help, not to mention a quality RB who can freakin stay healthy.

But for the various mistakes he's made, IMO Millen gets too much blame as hindsight is 20/20. I didn't hear people ripping on SD GM for drafting Leaf after he proved probably the biggest bust ever (insert tons of other examples here). Many of his picks/decisions are easy to blast in hindsight, but many (most?) thought they were good at the time they were made, including hiring Martz, drafting all those WRs except maybe Mike Williams (who had dropped farther than most expected at the time and Rogers was proving a bust already), trading back up to get Kevin Jones, etc etc etc.

You can't predict the future and odds of any given player or coach proving to be outstanding aren't real high. Hell win even 9 this year and I bet a lot less would be calling for his head.
