irish
I was just looking at the matchups for next weekend in the 1st round of the Playoffs and the NFC is just horrible. For the NFC the Redskins, Seahawks, Giants and Bucs represent the NFC for the first weekend. For the AFC it's the Steelers, Chargers, Jaguars and Titans. From this list I'd take every single AFC team over any NFC team with the possible exception of the Titans. That's not even touching the teams with a bye week. I know this has been talked about before but I just happened to come across the matchups and caught myself shaking my head.

I think the AFC, as usual in recent history, has better teams, but I'm not sure I see an incredible talent skewed towards one conference out of these 8 teams. Well I don't know if it's incredible but it's most definitely noticeable. The AFC teams on the bye week are better then the NFC teams as well as the teams that are playing next weekend. I feel the AFC is superior. How far superior? I'm not sure but we'll soon find out.

After the dust settles this weekend, the NFC will still have the same number of teams left in it as the AFC. I realize that. What I meant about finding out soon enough was within the next 3 weeks to a month. Should've worded it better. I don't know how you are going to find that out. I think anyone of these teams could beat the other except for Tennessee. Really? I don't think the Seahawks, Skins or Giants could beat the Steelers, Jaguars or Chargers. Ursa Majoris
I realize that. What I meant about finding out soon enough was within the next 3 weeks to a month. Should've worded it better. Even so, all we're going to find out is if the AFC rep is better than the NFC rep on that given Sunday. A better indicator, though still imperfect, is the regular season record of NFC vs AFC. Sure that would certainly prove a point as it would be a much larger sampling even though as you stated it's imperfect. So where can info like that be uncovered easily? Ursa Majoris
Google is your friend These are up to week 15 and are the AFC divisions against NFC opponents but it's much closer than you think. There's a lot of crappy teams in the AFC. We can gather from this that the AFC East (except NE) and the AFC West are both crap. New England 3-0Buffalo 1-2 New York Jets 0-4 Miami 0-4 Conference record against NFC 4-10 Pittsburgh 3-1 Cleveland 2-1 Cincinnati 1-3 Baltimore 3-1 Conference record against NFC 9-6 Indianapolis 4-0 Jacksonville 3-1 Tennessee 3-1 Houston 3-1 Conference record against NFC 13-3 San Diego 2-2 Denver 0-3 Oakland 0-3 Kansas City 1-3 Conference record against NFC 3-11 Total AFC vs. NFC up to week 15 29-30 Edited December 31, 2007 by Ursa Majoris

See that's my exact feeling on the subject, even though it seems pretty even, I feel the Top teams in the AFC are more superior than the top teams in the NFC. Sure there are bad teams in both conferences but the Top teams in the AFC are Top Notch.

irish
Based on what? Just how I feel. I think those 3 AFC teams are more complete than the 3 NFC teams mentioned. The Steelers and Jaguars are just tough hard-nosed teams, the Chargers aren't as much but they have LT and Gates which are probably 2 of the best players amongst the 3 teams. Yeah the Hawks have been humming offensively with the passing game but I don't think their D is that good and I think they're soft and it'll show against a tough team. The Skins just don't have enough offense and although the D is solid it's not spectacular. The G-Men are just WAY too inconsistent, Eli will flop, the secondary is whack and I don't even think they're playoff material. If I'm wrong...I'm wrong. Won't be the first time and won't be the last.

The numbers indicate what I think to be accurate after watching a lot of teams play throughout the year. Yeah the Hawks have been humming offensively with the passing game but I don't think their D is that good and I think they're soft and it'll show against a tough team. While no one will confuse the Hawks D for the 2nd coming of the 85 bears, they are a very effective team defense and are amongst the lead leaders in several categorizes, including points allowed and sacks. 4 Seahawks defensive players are pro-bowl starters.... (i.e..36+% of the team on one side of the ball). If I'm wrong...I'm wrong. Won't be the first time and won't be the last. Nothing wrong with being wrong....I just don't buy the premise for what you are selling, and don't think you really know what you are trying to sell. My point is actually pretty simple. I feel the Top of the AFC is much better then the Top of the NFC. The graphic Ursa posted showed that as a whole the conferences are pretty even. However, IMO looking at the playoffs teams from both sides, I feel the AFC is head and shoulders above the NFC. If you don't want to buy that, that's fine. But I definitely know what I'm selling. Menudo
Based on what? Well, out of the Chargers, Jags, & Steelers, most would consider the Steelers the weakest. Out of the Seahawks, Giants, & Skins, most would consider the Seahawks the strongest. The Steelers beat the Seahawks 21-0. Randall
Falcons owner Arthur Blank is expected to phone Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Monday to inquire about offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Garrett is believed to be a leading candidate on Blank's list of potential head coaches. Several clubs will likely call about Garrett this week. Donutrun Jellies
Maybe they could set something up where the AFC teams played the NFC teams in the offseason so we could see which league was stronger?

The Steelers beat the Seahawks 21-0. Why would they consider the Seahawks the strongest? The Giants played the Patriots to the wire, were 3-1 against the AFC and are in the strongest division top to bottom in the NFC. The Giants losses have been to the Cowboys twice.the Packers,Washington,New England and Minnesota. The Seahawks lost to Arizona,Pittsburgh,Cleveland,New Orleans,Carolina and Atlanta. The Patriots beat the Giants 38-35,beat the Steelers 34-13 and beat the Chargers 38-14. The Steelers lost to the Jets, the Giants beat the Jets. The Jags were beat by Tennesee at home, returned the favor on the road, the Chargers beat the Titans in OT at home . The Steelers and Chargers both lost to the Jags by 7.
