College Football Re-Visited

Last time we discussed the pros and cons of a college football playoff I brought up my concern that it might cheapen the regular season. Some felt there was no way any team would so call "pack it in" versus their rival even if the game had no bearing on that team's playoff position.

Not sure how many of you watched yesterday's NFL? Dallas @ Washington in particuliar.

Not sure if there is any greater rivalry in the NFL , but If you did watch then perhaps you might understand how a playoff could potential cheapen late season college rivalry games like OSU vs. Michigan, USC vs. UCLA, Alabama vs. Auburn etc. should a playoff be put in place.

Washington 27 Dallas 6

Pittsburgh could have captured the No. 3 seed by defeating Baltimore, coupled with a loss by San Diego, but the Steelers downplayed that scenario earlier in the week. It wasn't just idle talk. If this game meant anything to the Steelers, they probably would have played Roethlisberger, Ward, safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback/kick returner Allen Rossum. All were on the inactive list, nursing minor injuries.

Baltimore 27 Pittsburgh 21

Jaguars-Texans game lacks intensity of past meetings between the two. HOUSTON (AP) -Jacksonville and Houston's regular-season finale Sunday won't have quite the intensity of past meetings between these AFC South rivals. In 2004 and 2005, the Jaguars had to beat the Texans to grab a playoff spot. Houston kept them out in 2004, but Jacksonville won the next season to get its spot. Because the Jaguars have already clinched their wild-card playoff spot this season, there's a chance their top players could sit for some or all of this game.

Houston 42 Jacksonville 28

The final piece of the AFC playoff picture came down to the final game on the final weekend of the regular season. Tennessee had to win to make the postseason for the first time since 2003, while an Indy win would have sent the Browns to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Inside the RCA Dome, you could almost hear the groans coming from the shores of Lake Erie when Peyton Manning traded his helmet for a headset early in the second quarter. To the Browns' chagrin, that was how the Colts chose to play.

Tennessee 16 Indianapolis 10

Rocker, dude, apples and oranges buddy. One loss in college footbal is much more devastating than one loss in the NFL. We've been over this before.

Exactly my point. Any kind of playoff besides a plus one would dramtically increase the chances of teams potentially doing what we saw happen in the NFL yesterday. Just wanted to bring it up while it was still fresh in eveyone's mind.
