theprofessor Posted January 10, 2008 Share Posted January 10, 2008 I know that Pete was approached by a couple NFL teams last year (Miami and San Diego) but could he possibly be interested in going to Atlanta? Rumor is that he would get HUGE coin and complete control of personnel decisions but Atlanta? I do see Pete going to the NFL someday but not now, not to Coldlanta. I think Pete wants to prove that he can win at the next level and he has really nothing more to prove at SC. He has built that program into the #1 program in College football. What have you heard? Do you think he's talking to Mr. Blank to get leverage for a new deal at SC? Do you know what the terms are with his current contract with SC? You don't think, he thinks, that he has something left to prove by winning in the NFL? I agree he has a great deal where he's at but it seems like these top level coaches are rarely satisfied and want to conquer the next challenge. From a purley coaching standpoint, Carroll doesn't seem like the type of guy that is obsessed with winning. So no I don't think he feels he has something to prove per say. I just think most of these college coaches are that way, and if you don't really feel anything to prove, then the only other reason to make the jump is the money. I would never fault anyone for wanting more money. The consequences are pretty severe. Chances are if and when he decides the nfl isn't for him (like most do) USC likely won't be his destination. Now, the money will always be there no matter what school he ends up at, because college administrators are equally as bad as the coaches themselves when it comes to this stuff. When you look at Pete on the sidelines, you do not get the impression that he's blind with ambition or has anything to prove. He looks like he's truly having a great time. He looks healthy, tan, and completely content where he is. To be honest, from the outside, it looks like he's gotten to the point that he's just a really well paid cheerleader. He's got a pipeline of talent (no doubt recruited, to a large degree by guys working under him, needing only to close the deals personally on the real blue chips), he's got a legion of assistants who seem to do the heavy lifting. Every time they show the guy, he's freaking playing catch with somebody. Do you think Pete is staying up until 3am watching film? Not likely. I agree with a lot of what Brian said but I still have a gut feeling that were going to see Pete Carroll coaching an NFL team inside of 4 years. But he does it with an eye towards the 'work = fun angle' all the time. I just think the No Fun League would burn him out in a few years, whether he can win a SB and 'prove himself at the next level' or not. And then what, back to college? Cowherd had a good points this morning: 1) 'married guys that flirt a lot eventually cheat, but Atlanta has too much baggage to be the one he cheats with.' His ego is big enough to want an instant turnaround, and he's got a better chance of winning next year with Sanchez or Mustain vs. the Pac10 than he would with Harrington/Leftwich vs. the NFL - by a long shot. QB play is so important in the NFL, and he's smart enough to see that. 2) Re: the possible Bush sanctions, while it may be part of his thoughts, what can the NCAA do to really hurt the program? Taking away the Heisman, or even 1 or 2 past NC titles would sting a bit but wouldn't hurt the current team; and taking away 5-10 scholarships and maybe some tv time would sting more, but not hurt it long term. The only thing that would hurt/piss off the alumni a lot would be a 1 or 2 year bowl ban on top of 10+ scholarships lost - that would really suck, and could cause him to jump ship or be fired. But I don't see that extreme punishment measure happening, as it would require proving the coaches had knowledge of the offenses, and the reporters/investigators have turned up nothing on that front. And they won't. (I find myself agreeing with Cowherd a lot - he's a smart guy.) So yes, St. Pete could leave at some point, but I don't think it will be for Atlanta at this time. He is the biggest star in LA now, which is saying a lot. Why not ride that a little longer until the absolute perfect opportunity arises? He's not dumb....
