Classless Fans...

I finally have to post this as I'm tired of hearing about it here in Jacksonville. Lots of trash talk going around these boards about fans in different cities. There are goons in every city. Unless your team plays for Heaven and Jesus is your QB, you're going to see and hear it in any sports town PERIOD. I'm going to use my team the Steelers as an example because I live in Jacksonville and the local new station here aired a story about a Jag fan getting attacked at the recent Steelers-Jags playoff game. The way they go about telling this story pisses me off. It makes people here in Jax think that ALL Steeler fans are abnoxious goons. I feel bad for the guy that got cheap-shotted. And I get embarrassed at how some dirtbag from my birth city and fellow fan of my favorite team could do such a thing. It's the few bad apples that can not only ruin a fan of another city's visit, but also that visiting city's perception of your fans. Now in this video that I'm going to give a link to, you be the judge. The Jag fan walks around Heinz field before the game with his video camera and of course is going to get his share of cuss words and the finger. It would happen here in Jax also if a Steeler fan did the same thing. I have seen it. I was a season ticket holder here for 3 years. I wore my Black and gold when the Steelers played here and ultimately that's the reason I gave them up. I missed watching my boys play every week.

I sent my broither the same link I'm sending y'all here. He's a cop for the Pittsburgh Police Dept. He said that by all means that ass of a fan should have been arrested on the spot. Hell, as a fellow Steeler fan I may have kicked his ass if I'd have seen him do this. Now what I don't understand about this story is how they say there was absolutely no security around. If there was no security, then how did this guy get removed from the game? Now we all have had our share of jawing at opposing fans. In fact, it's done most times in a playfull manner. There's no excuse for what this dooosh did. If I were the Jag fan I would pursue a lawsuit on him. He should have his season tickets revoked if he has them also. Don't need people like this in the stands giving the city that i was born and raised a bad name. But the media is partially to blame for the bad stereotypes that result in incidents like this. They could have made a comment like, "we know most of the fans in Pittsburgh are good people. Just the few bad apples make it bad for everyone". That would have made me feel alot better. But nooo we have to make this into an "all Pittsburgh fans are dirtbags" story. See what you think and next time you're at a game and have had a few to drink, if you feel the urge to do something stupid, please remember that you may be giving your city a bad name. For me this means absolutely no tequila before or during a game. :D Rant over... here's the linky

Listen real close at the very end, you'll here them say in the RV "they're sick people". :D

I listened real close and then it sounded to me like they continued and said "let's just run over some of them".

What I don't get is how the guy said that there weren't any cops around, but then he was going to kick the guy's ass but then the cops showed up, and then talked about how he was in extreme pain and had to be carted away by paramedics.

I'm thinking there is probably more to this story than what appears in this video.

I was out for a run on Saturday, heading down Newbury Street in Boston, and I saw two dudes wearing Jags spamshirts (MJD #32 and Matt Jones #18). They were taking cell phone pics of themselves, having a good time. We were all waiting on a street corner for a walk signal when I turned to one of them, picked up a nearby frozen boulder of ice, and smashed the MJD guy's skull in. He deserved it...because he was wearing a different colored jersey from the jersey I support.

:D As Seinfeld said, when it comes to sports fans, we're all just "rooting for laundry."

(p.s. Actually, I struck up a conversation with them, told 'em I'd shot a commercial with MJD and he was about the nicest, most humble kid you'd ever want to meet, and that I'd be rooting for him if he wasn't playing the Pats....we had some good natured "you guys have no chance" smack, wished each other luck, have fun at the game, in Boston, gave them a couple good bars names, etc. and went on our way. No punches. No paddy wagons. Just boring old non-violent sports interaction. Amazes me that morons resort to physical violence when "defending" their sports teams/players. Idiots.)

Exacty what I was wondering in my post too Wiegie. The media shows the Jag fans what they want to see and nothing else. But they let that little smart assed comment that the dude made when holding the camera slip by. I wonder how many more smart assed comments he made during the game, especially with the Jags up 21-7 at the half.

I live around Philly and as an Eagles fan, I was not aware such fan stereotyping and generalization existed. :D

 I wonder what would happen if I wore a Dallas, NYG, or Redskin jersey in Philly and went around interviewing Philly fans before the game. :D

Larger fan base + more passionate fans generally = more a-hole fans, hence more vocal and the bad reputation.

The bottom line is, as has been said countless times, there are always a few bad apples in every fan base.

People enjoy fishing and stirring the pot for/against one team or another around the Huddle and in the world in general. If we want to play that game, that's perfectly fine. Just don't take it too seriously. I know I don't. It's a lot of fun bashing the Cowboys fans, but I've never come to blows over it because it's simply good fun. I personally make a choice not to crow about my team too much (when there is something to be happy about) because I don't like hearing it from others.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I like to win with class as well as lose with dignity. Just don't feed me any tequila. :D

In general, southern teams have great stadiums and nice fans, north eastern stadium have crappy stadiums, jails in the stadiums and you have to be on guard at all times for cheap shot artists.

I am one of the few around here who doesn't seem to have intense hate for the Pats and is not a Pats fan, but man, can you just give it a rest? Nothing wrong with being a good winner. I don't see what's the point of your countless, chest-thumping while insulting other teams' fans. Enjoy the amazing year the Pats are having. You don't have to continually put down others.

In every crowd there is always "that guy" and competition and booze can bring out the worst in people. I've gone to Lions games for 25+ years and have seen some crazy stuff, especially in the Silverdome. I've also been to many road games and have learned it doesn't pay to egg the other fans on even in the slightest bit. I find it a bit surprising that this guy didn't say or do anything and just "got punched for no reason". No "good" reason, I might believe.

Here's how my experience breaks this down:

1. Drunk passionate Steeler fan, seeing his teams season is coming to an end throws out "Jacksonville sucks"...with or without explitive at the end.

2. Jag fan replies "we're kicking your a$$", or something of that nature.

3. Jag fan gets punched

I've seen it a dozen times easy. I've never punched or got punched but I've been over-the-top a few times and probably deserved to get cut off. I can't say it's gotten much better in my old age but I take my wife to most of the games and she's not afraid to tell me to calm down. At road games however, it pays to just smile and wave because you don't have many friends.

I am originally from CT. I was born in Hartford but moved to FL. when I was a kid. Most of my family, on both my parents side, still lives in CT. I go back from time to time to visit family and friends in the area. Usually I'll go either in the Summer or during the Christmas holidays. About 10 years ago one of my cousins was getting married in Nov. Just so happens the Dolphins were playing at Foxboro and a few of my family members are die hard Patsie fans so I figured it would be a great time to go for a visit and see my first game in enemy territory.

We get to the game a few hours before kick-off. Typical tailgating. BBQ, beer, football, kids, music the whole deal. It's f'ing cold as hell (for me anyway) and my Uncle and his friends bust out the party favorites and it's on. I'm sporting my Marino jersey, Dolphins beanie and jacket. Full on aqua and orange in a sea of red-white and blue Patsie fans. I'll tell you what. I had a blast. I got the full on ball busting in the parking lot, heckled by everyone including some kids using profanity laced "Dolphins f*cking suck!" and so on. For the most part it was all good. The crew we parked next to were full on Patsie iron workers or something. Just big old drunken brutes raising hell and scaring everyone around them but they shared their whiskey with us and I had brought up some very tasty buds that we smoked out with them. I took flak all game. It was a close game and during the course I had pop-corn, beer and a few other things heaved at me when I stood up to cheer on my 'Fins. Actually there were a couple of other Dolphin fans sitting in the row in front of me. I tried to get them to stand and sing the Dolphins fight song when we scored but they looked a bit nervous and just sat there and tried to ignore me.

I'll tell you I had a great time. We lost but it was close. The walk out I got some more"Dolphins f'ing suck!" and such and a few hard pats on the back and one dude tried to steal my beanie but it was all good. I've been to a lot of games and that was easily in my top 10 of greatest game experiences. My uncle invites me back but it's hard to go because my anniversary is in the fall and we usually go somewhere but it looks like I'm coming back to CT this fall and going to the Dolphins/Patsie once again. Can't wait to see the new stadium.

Get ready NE fans! :D
