msaint
Breaks down the # of NFL players per million people (of a state's population). Some surprises, like Texas and California not being nearly as high as you'd think (#11 and #20 respectively) ,and D.C. being #2 overall...and every New England state except MA (#38 overall) make up the absolute bottom 5 (CT, RI, ME, VT, NH), so clearly the Pats aren't recruiting regionally So who's #1 overall?........ http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02...untry/#comments
Randall
Before reading it I would guess LA. Wrong overall but at least WI is ahead of Minnesota. Edited February 3, 2008 by Randall

AtomicCEO
I can only speak for CT... It's the third smallest state (although 22nd smallest by population) There is no real statewide youth football program. Several high schools near mine didn't even have a HS Football team. Unlike, say... Texas, A significant number of the more athletic kids opted for hockey or soccer. Up until a few years ago, we've never had a D1 college football team. What can you do? I'd like to see a breakdown of NHL players by home state.
msaint
I'd like to see a breakdown of NHL players by home state. Well, this is where New England would dominate, along with Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and maybe Colorado. The Boston area has long been one of the deepest hockey talent pools, if not the deepest, in the U.S.

DMD
ordering them just by number and not percentage of population shows just how popular football is in CA, TX and FLA which was expected but GA and LA still rank really high. I was a little surprised that PA did not rank higher since they are really big on it and have produced so many great players. No. State 200 California 174 Texas 173 Florida 86 Georgia 84 Louisiana 73 Ohio 60 Pennsylvania 53 South Carolina 51 Virginia 48 Mississippi 45 Michigan 45 Illinois 44 New Jersey 42 Alabama 41 Washington 40 North Carolina 34 New York 33 Tennessee 28 Maryland 25 Iowa 24 Arizona 21 Oklahoma 21 Missouri 18 Arkansas 18 Massachusetts 17 Colorado 16 Wisconsin 16 Indiana 14 Nebraska 14 Minnesota 13 Kansas 13 Oregon 12 Utah 11 Hawaii 10 District of Columbia 9 Kentucky 8 Idaho 5 West Virginia 5 Connecticut 4 Delaware 4 Nevada 3 Wyoming 3 Montana 3 New Mexico 2 North Dakota 2 Alaska 2 South Dakota 1 Rhode Island 1 New Hampshire 1 American Samoa 0 Vermont 0 Maine

They are a small state and did a lot better than even N Carolina.
pig devilz
without reading any further than the OP post, i would guess Pa is high on the list.... quick edit...not bad, in the top 7 of most nfl'ers....i thought it would have been higher Edited February 3, 2008 by pig devilz
SuperCharger
Georgia takes it's HS and College ball very seriously. I'm not surprised that it ranks well.
