Chief Dick
This is something that has bothered me since I was 11 years old and the Phillies beat the Royals in the World Series. The announcers kept saying the Phillies were World Champions, and between my sobs and tears I remember saying: "They aren't World Champions. They haven't beaten anyone from outside America." And so I wonder, why should a team that wins an American championship be called a "World Champion." Why not go even farther and call em "Masters of the Universe?" Is it American arrogance that decrees automatically that OUR champion is World Champion designate? Because clearly, in the sports of baseball and basketball that is not the case anymore. Any thoughts, or I am the only one who is bothered by this.
tonorator
agreed. why not be proud to say that they are the best in the country? it's like miss universe. she's really miss earth.
twiley
You answered your question already. American arrogance.
Bronco Billy
You obviously haven't seen the Alpha Centari swfrgtigis play. Then you'd know why they aren't masters of the universe. Besides, the rest of the world plays kickball, not football (except Australia, and American football players would get their asses kicked in Australian rules football). Furd
I've wondered that myself. It's particularly amusing in basketball, given the recent US performances in world competitions.

Until the late 1980's, the NBA championships ware called the World Championships. Tthey are now called :The NBA Finals" without any reference to them being world championships. Ursa Majoris
It is a source of some vague amusement in Europe and beyond but I doubt anyone really thinks the less of the US because of it. In the NFL it's beyond question that the SB winner is the World Champ since what few other leagues exist are totally irrelevant park recreation leagues. No-one else plays the game. Notice hockey also doesn't use the term World Champions.......
Sturphy
Baseball began a long time ago. 1860's? Probably born from Cricket, but whatever. So, if it was only played in the United States, and no one else was playing it, why not say "World"? They would be the only ones playing in the World. As for football, it's American Football. See where I'm going with this? I don't think it's arrogance. But we are better than everyone else.

godtomsatan
Technically, it's called the Super Bowl and the winners are the Super Bowl Champions.

jjpro11
you could argue that since the league is comprised of the greatest players in the world, that the giants or any super bowl winner, is the greatest professional football team assembled on the planet since the nfl has the most talented players in the world... of course the nfl doesnt have remotely close to the number of international players as baseball, basketball, and hockey do. but thats a stretch of course.. world champions are most fitting in the olympics and stuff.
