If they changed the cap from 14 million extra to less than that it would be worse off for the Red Skins. Can they field a team seriously with -20 mill in cap space? It seems like they will have to waive a large portion of their team. Well at least we know why Gibbs really left then.

My question to this is why would the owners be so short sighted and agree to this just two years ago, but that is an entirely different thread all together.

The cap is jumping up way too quickly. The cap was $85.5M in 2005. Now just 3 years later, it's already jumped up $30.5M. That's a 36% increase in just 3 years. That's also almost a $1 BILLION cumulative difference in payment to players (and loss of income to owners) across the league.

The NFL owners won't allow salaries to spiral out of control like this. I would expect there to be a significant management/labor issue after the coming season - and it wouldn't suprise me in the least to see either a lockout or a strike depending upon which party decides to draw the line in the sand. The NFL owners have been extremely careful in managing the league, which is part of the reason it has been so wildly successful.
