Mike Mayock's top drfat prospects

Mendenhall over McFadden? Wow. Guess he thinks Mendenhall is a more complete back? Strange, everyone's saying McFadden is the next big thing and he's not even the #1 RB prospect in this class, according to Mayock. Interesting.

Mendehall is THE rb this draft IMO.

With the 1.02 I am just hoping everyone stops talking about him!

If you watch most of DMC's highlights, it's all speed in open space. He has a good stiff arm, but he isn't gonna pound it in between the tackles or move the pile consistently for you. He looks like a WR and runs upright, but maybe a few years in the pros will help him bulk up.

I don't think he will be as successful if he is expected to be THE back on a team, but his athletic ability is off the charts and he definitely has the potential to be a great player. Mendenhall seems more like a guy that you can plug in right away.

If my team were looking to take a RB, I'd rather have them wait til the second round, save some cash, and take Johnson or Charles (who's even faster than DMC).

Wow... I think Henne is way too high at no.2 but I won't question his QB's after he called Cutler all along.

I like seeing someone finally putting Manningham atop the receivers board.

Seeing McFadden at 2 was a shock as was Sam Baker not being a top five.

sam baker is plummeting....ive heard he was horrible at the senior bowl....i even heard somebody mention the 3rd round

I read mixed reviews on Baker's Senior Bowl, but I think his size and run blocking skills are the 2 negatives against him. I think he has great balance and feet when he's up against pass rushers.

Kiper still thinks he is. Mendenhall should go to a better team than McFadden but I doubt he factors that in.

Mayock isn't afraid to say what he really thinks. If anyone's list is opposed to his I'll bet those people will seriously re-evaluated their lists.

2 years ago Mayock predicted the Bills would takem Donte Whitner and then said the Lions would take linebacker Ernie Sims with the ninth pick.

I've been on the Mayock bus for a few years now...the guy just simply knows his stuff...

he's better than an analyst....I really think he could make a great NFL scout...

unless he's the only guy that the scouts aren't lying to...or giving 3 week old information...

He watches a lot of tape. He likes Chris Johnson(RB E Carolina) a lot, calls him a home run hitter and says he has legit 4.35 speed. I'll have to see him at the combine if he's there.

I guess they're putting a ton of stock into one weeks worth of practices and games... I'm not a USC fan by any stretch, but I thought he had a strong year.

That's not really fair, I think 99% of the lineman would look more similar to Gallery than Joe Thomas. Thomas is an absolute monster.

He looked pretty good to me against Ok St and Ohio St. He has great vision, good size, and makes people miss all the time. He wasn't even in a good run system at UT. Put him in a ZBS in the NFL and he will tear it up.

Have to agree. He's a one-cut runner (many of those in the NFL now enjoying success) with incredible speed and more power than people give him credit for.

I still like McFadden's chances a lot. Imagine Reggie Bush, but only 15 pounds heavier. While McFadden is by no means a masher, he is much more capable of running between the tackles than Bush is. That makes him more complete, more dangerous, and harder for Ds to cope with.

BTW - the guy who may end up having the best pro career for a RB out of this draft may not be either McFadden or Mendenhall. This draft is quite possibly the best draft for RBs in the last 25-30 years. It was shaping up as one of the top 3-4 of the past 30 years and then we got a strong influx of underclassmen who have strong pro capability after the season ended. There will be guys going as the 7th-10th RB off the board who would have been top 5 in most other years.

While I agree with your assessment of Manningham's ability (I love the kid as a pro WR and think he is the best of this class), there are still 3 guys a lot bigger than he is who are very good WRs - although Sweed now has injury worries attached to him, and there is no question that the NFL is head-over-heels in love with big WRs. It's gotten to the point where size almost overwhelms receiving ability, which makes absolutely no sense to me. Everyone is trying to find the next Owens/Moss and they forget how much of an impact the Harrison/Holt/Driver/S Smith type guys make.

Then you have Jackson and his return ability and how that is now the new crush for GMs/owners in the NFL, and they'll forget that Jackson is almost unusable as a WR because he is so damn slight. He'll never get off the line against press coverage, so his speed as a WR is completely negated most plays.

We'll see. I just have a hard time believing Manningham goes off the board as the #1 WR, or in the first round - unless the big WRs have terrible combines.

How many 1st rounder RBs will there be in the draft?

I see at least 4. Depending upon how the draft goes, it could go to 5.

The trick is not knowing how many go in the first round, it's figuring out which probable 2 of those 4 will be busts - which is what the odds say will happen - when drafting for FF purposes. Though to be perfectly candid, I do think all 3 of the top 3 RBs have the ability to see their entire skill set transfer to the next level and that they all could become good to very good RBs, with possibly one of them moving up to greatness (which one, I don't know, but I have my suspicions).
