NFL helmet change in the near future?

The article makes me wonder - why aren't helmets soft instead of hard? It is making them hard that causes so many injuries and something that is hard is not going to absorb any energy from a hit. Maybe something like a boxing glove for the head. Then again, maybe the players wouldn't want to look like Randy Moss when he doesn't use cornrows...

I'm not claiming to be an expert on helmet technology, but I did recently do some research on motorcycle helmets, and they have several components that do different things. The outside is hard to dissipate an impact, then underneath the outer shell is basically styrofoam, which is softer and acts to absorb the shock. So, they're supposed to work together to protect the head from impacts.

I was reading the guy that wrote this articles website. Apparently they tried using a softer, foamy helmet material before the hard plastic ones. The friction of the helmet against the ground, other helmets and such was causing neck injuries. Whereas the hard shell slides along things easier.
