How are Players paid?

Players get thr porportioned part of their salary after each game. Plus a small amount of extra pay while in training camp.

For signing bonuses, it is generally written in the contract how it will be distributed, but it is usually a lump-sum payment.

I read a while back that Al Davis preferred to hand out paychecks PERSONALLY, to each player after every game. You know, to remind them of who they worked for.

Any Raider homers able to verify this? I'm going to assume that no longer happens due to his age, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I wonder if they get taxed at 30% for bonuses like I do.

Is that tax law or specific to the NFL? If it's the former me and my boss need to talk.

That's tax law as shown here. Page 13-14 shows that your employer cannot arbitrarily withold 30%. They must withold 25% or do a calculation that would most likely come up with a number less than 25%, unless you request a higher % witheld. I think the $1M part is new this year so if your bonus was $1M or more in year's past maybe your company was correct by only witholding 30%. :D

I can't imagine what it would be like to receive a check in my name with six or seven zeros on it. (eight or nine if you count the cents)

Most won't have zeros ... they'll have other numbers. So, if a guy's base is $4.9 million, his game check is $309,375.00...as far as I can tell, that's only two consecutive zeroes and they're on the 'wrong' side of the decimal.
