bigbadwolf
Let's try to keep this about the possibility of the Hawks cutting Alexander versus the reliability of Profootballtalk.com. That said, with our cap already near the limit with the recent franchising of Trufant, and both Tatupu and Leroy Hill being FAs next year, it's clear to me that either S Alexander needs to rework his contract to stay a Hawk or he will indeed be cut to free up the cap room. The Hawks want Trufant locked up for the next 4-6 years, and there is NO WAY Tatupu leaves, the fans would burn down the Hawk's HQ. And Leroy is very valuable and well liked in the Seattle area, so I would assume the Hawks would like to at least be in the position to make a legit run at keeping both LBs. This really is becoming a Defensive team first and with Mora taking over as HC in 2009, I suspect they'll try very hard to keep the core defense in place. Now if I know Alexander at all as a player, there is no chance he is willing to take a paycut, he truly is all about the money (and his personal records). So imo that would basically force the Hawks to cut him this season. Hawks got played when they gave SA his big money contract like many fans feared would happen, well played by SA but the jig is up. The Hawks will cut their losses imo and learn from this mistake.

bigbadwolf
what's the potential cap hit for releasing him? The cap hit would be 6.9 million. So the Hawks could eat that all this year and be done with it, or they could designate it a post June 1st cut and spread it out over two years, 2.3 this year and 4.6 in 2009. Swampnuts
I've always been a big Alexander fan, but I could see this happening depending on the cap hit involved. I have no idea how the numbers play out here. They'd have to draft a RB in the first round to do it though.
Patsfan39
I could see him going to Carolina. Now that foster is gone.

DMD
well, it's not like Alexander is going to get any younger or more durable or more effective this year. They had to know when they gave him that huge payday that he would never work it out. He signed a $62 million deal in the offseason of 2006 and then has been a HUGE flop since then. it is an eight year contract which is pretty amusing since he has paid off almost zero. Two years of 3.6 or less YPC and a total of 23 games and 11 TDs over the last two years. He turns 31 this year - put a fork in him. I still cannot believe they ever gave him that contract. SEA should just bite the bullet and move forward.
Sturphy
I still cannot believe they ever gave him that contract. Seriously. Especially in hindsight. Yeesh. I suppose right around his signing is when the "RB's are expendable and plentiful" theory of roster management was on the upswing. Or was it earlier than that? DMD
Since he signed for the most money for a RB in NFL history and then did basically nothing but hurt the team, I would say Alexander is the poster boy for "RB's are expendable and plentiful". We'll never know what other RBs would have done behind that great O-line they had a few years ago. I love RBs and all but I would never pay huge bucks to one. It is as much about the blocking as the running.

He was the league MVP. He was being rewarded for his previous service at a lesser price. I'm a Seahawk fan, I didn't mind it. I like seeing NFL players get a payday. Far too many of them don't get one before injuries catch them. The contract is significantly back-loaded with escalations kicking in after this season. While I suspect they might ask Shaun to renegotiate, I doubt they cut him pre-June 1st, just to have the extra $3 mil for '08.

DMD
In the last two years: Edgerrin James - 32 games played, 2381 rushing yards, 13 TDs, 421 receiving yards, 3.6 YPC Shaun Alexander - 23 games played, 1612 rush yards, 11 TDs, 124 receiving yards, 3.5 YPC I'd rather have James who played on a far lesser team and actually stayed healthy. drbob
Besides injuries a big factor in Alexander's performance was the Hutchinson debacle. Getting older, injuries, and the loss of a superior guard all played a role in Alexander's loss of effectiveness. I think everybody knew the he would never be paid the money in the tail end of the contract. Unfortunately we reached the tail end a couple of years early. Seahawks21
They aren't going to cut Shaun. Renegotiate....mmmmm...maybe, although that would be awfully hard to get a "me" guy to do. Even if they use their first round draft pick on a RB, they will keep Shaun around. They just don't make enough money by cutting him to rationalize for the upside lost. bigbadwolf
What upside? Keeping the bench warm in the late season games for a real RB when the Hawks offense comes off the field after a series.
bushwacked
What upside? SA is old and beyond the glory days. Yet his line last year sucked, and the upside is that he is better than Maurice Morris. Just kind of like Jamal Lewis is still better than Chester Taylor. Just saying...
Seahawks21
I'm just saying that Shaun still has to have "some" upside, based on the fact that he has been hurt the last two years and was extremely productive before the injuries. Look, a lot of people know here that I have absolutely zero faith in Alexander, but even as on of his biggest haters, I have to acknowledge that there still is a chance that when healthy, he may not be as bad as he has been showing lately. The Seahawks save so little by cutting him that it is probably worth holding on to him just to make sure he really doesn't have anything left.
