Grossman staying in Chicago...

Not surprising, really. This gives a little extra leverage in resigning Berrian since they DO like each other although I question if it's enough for him to stay. Orton showed he can push Rex, which allows them to drop Griese and replace him in the draft. A couple of Bears blogs have a crush on Flacco so we'll see about that.

Also Michigan QB Chad Henne.

From the Chi Trib:

"Henne actually has a contact with the Bears. He was recruited by then-Illinois coach Ron Turner coming out of high school in Pennsylvania. The Bears offensive coordinator couldn't entice Henne to play for the Illini, but he earned Henne's respect.

"Turner is a great coach," Henne said. "I remember him taking me around when they had a crappy shoes from spammers camp there. It was a good mesh."

Reuniting with Turner is not so far-fetched considering the Bears' draft needs. Certainly the Bears might consider one of the top quarterbacks -- Matt Ryan from Boston College or Brian Brohm from Louisville -- if either drops to the No. 14 overall pick. But realistically, the Bears could look for a quarterback in the second or third rounds, likely Henne or Delaware's Joe Flacco."

As a Packers fan, the Bears drafting Henne would make me ecstatic. This guy has all of the physical skills to get it done, but lacks decision making skills to get it done. He's extremely up and down, and I don't think could be a very good starter... He reminds me of Kyle Boller in that sense.

I didn't see enough of either of these guys to know how good/bad they are. I do think this year's QB crop will be fairly weak. And I read on Henne, other than what you said, is that he doesn't have a strong arm (Griese?).

His arm isn't a weakness, but he's not going to be confused with Favre or Cutler either.

Well, it's only for a year, and he does know the offense, so it kind of makes sense. I doubt he'll be the starter, or at any rate, he won't be a starter for too long... but he wouldn't be a bad backup QB for the Bears. I think this is an ok signing,

Again....from the Trib:

"He isn't the tallest and doesn't possess the strongest arm."

"The biggest knock on him is his inability to make plays outside of the pocket." That's a big one from a Bear POV, unless the OL is improved.

Sorry to rely on the TRIB, but I don't watch enough college ball to form a good analysis! Gil?????????

Yep. Nothing dramatic. Keeps the Bears at status quo until they can find an answer to the question of what to do after Jim McMahon.

First of all, signing Rex for only one year and at that price is simply a bargain. They will cut Griese to save a roster bonus, and Rex and Orton fight it out this year.

They have already cut Miller and Brown, so that OL will be changed considerably next year.

As for Henne, he has a good arm, and shows great touch on the long ball--I was impressed with that. Much like any other QB, he was at his best when the running game was going good for Michigan. Under pressure, he hasn't really showed the composure or awareness that would make me feel he's anything better than Orton. I wouldn't over value him in the draft....I'd take a flyer on Flacco over him at this stage--bigger upside ISMO.

There are so many holes on this team--they'll need a clear #1 WR, 3 new OL's, a RB, a long term QB....they should be drafting at least 2 OL's in their first 4 picks this year, even if they go out and overpay for Faneca, which they should.

Yeah $3M for 1 yr isn't bad at all, really...basically backup money yet he still might start (at least some of the time) - and it's only one year.

As for Flacco, the way I hear people are pissing their pants about him in the combine, he might go early as late 1st or early 2d, which is similar to where Henne is I think supposedly ranked.

Well give the Bears a break; these things take time (it's only been 20 yrs since McMahon).

i dont see Grossman finding magic and turning into a much better qb anytime soon

everyone said that about eli for most of the last 2 years....so the bottom line ISMHO is that you just never really know until they're old and past their prime. It could all click, but it most likely won't.

Guys, the Bears want to stabilize the quarterback position. They are working right now on a two year extension for Kyle Orton so that after next year, they aren't left with anything at the quarterback position. Makes sense considering how many quarterbacks have put on a Bears uni in the last several years.

This is a great sign in terms of money considering during the middle of the season, Angelo said he was thinking Rex was going to get an "average" quarterback contract, which in estimates, is about $7 million. Yikes. Very glad we didn't pay that to Rex.

This will be the first open competition in training camp since 2001 when Miller beat out Matthews and McNown. It will be good for this team to have these two guys duke it out. Griese will be cut before March 4th when his roster bonus is due. He might get cut next week.

I dunno if I could ever like Henne in a Bears uniform. Ugh. I joked with my friends that I would tell my mom to sell the season tickets if Henne gets drafted. I hope I don't eat my words...

The Bears re-signing Grossman was a smart idea for them as it looks like they are going to draft Henne, but as Henne not having descision making abilities is incorrect. I saw Henne wen they played Kentucky i think and he was lighting up the field, he was unstoppable that game and i also saw the bowl game he played in and yet he was throwing the ball all over that defense i think if is drafted to chicago that he will get a chance at the starting position and i think he will be a good quality QB

With respect, congrats on weeding out two games out of his career and applauding his decision making. Go check out many other games, including some big games against tOSU.

And can you please explain how it "looks like" the Bears will draft Henne? Do you know something that us Bears fans don't? Has Angelo or Lovie leaked something? It's anyone's guess at this point...

Henne went to Michigan. His decision making skills appear fine to me.

I don't think the Bears had much choice but to keep Rex around 1 more year. Othwerise, they'd be looking at Leftwich or whoever they will be drafting and Grossman is a step above either of those options, IMHO.
