Antonio Gates - Toe Surgery

Gates weighing options on toe

Gates' toe still hurting; surgery appears likely

Early season production could be hurt according to time frames outlined in links above. Expect to see a lot more of Scott Chandler , especially early in the season until Gates is fully healed/mobile. In reality, I see this as a positive for the WR corps. This will bring more camp and pre-season focus on the developement of Chambers, VJax and Buster Davis as a unit with Chandler getting enough reps to make him a more reliable factor for depth behind Gates.

My feeling, besides the injury is that the three WRs are going to start seeing more looks in Turner's O anyway and will take some balls away from Gates (which could be good for longevity and health). Gates will still be a major force at TE and perinially top 3-5, but a more balanced passing attack will effect his production. A late third rounder is probably now too early as compared to where he was going last year.

Adjust your draft boards as appropriate.

No doubt a good heads up here with Gates' injury. However, I had already adjusted my draft board coming off last season's production. Not only was Gates not the #1 TE, he wasn't #2 either. He finished 3rd behind Witten and Gonzo and yet was drafted as early as the 3rd round and no later than the 6th. Whereas the rest were drafted anywhere between 1 and 5-6 rounds later. There were 4 top notch TE's this year- Witten, Gonzo, Gates and Winslow (Dallas Clark should also be here). All finished with above 220 points on the year. Witten finished with a little over 250, Gonzo a little over 245, Gates a little over 225 and Winslow about 225. The rest of the TEs were below 200. So not only has my draft board been adjusted but Gates will most likely not be a part of my list as he will be taken way earlier than he should be again this year and as proven, the talent in the TE pool is pretty deep. After the Top 4 TEs, two others scored about 190 points (Cooley and Dallas Clark- missed time). Dallas Clark was one of, if not the hotest TE at one point this past year. He missed what amounted to 2 games and therefore averaged about 13.5 points per game, just a small fraction behind Gates. Which would make him part of the elite group making that group 5 deep. So that's 6 TEs that could average about 12-16 pts a week. Add to that list Shockey who was injured and missed 2 games and change, otherwise averaged almost 11 points a game, Owen Daniels, Heath Miller and Ben Watson who had 112 pts on the year but missed 4 weeks and change therefore giving him an average of over 10 points a week. So altogether that makes for 10 solid TEs that would allow any team to remain competitive at the position from week to week. So if you're in a 10 or 12 team league you can afford to wait while stockpiling in other areas.

And I didn't even mention guys like; Crumpler, Vernon Davis, Donald Lee, Scheffler and the always injured Todd Heap. Options are plentiful and this is the year we should see Gates slide further down into the rounds, especially with the toe issues he's having.

Chris Cooley needs to be in the discussion, ahead of Dallas Clark in my opinion...

No doubt Cooley's in the discussion. He's in the Top 6. I'm sure you just missed his name in there as I didn't alk alot about him. He was the #5 ranked TE this year but would've been #6 if Clark doesn't get hurt. And yet even with the injury Clark was only 6 pts behind him.

Tooty, is there a place where I can get your expert analysis and custom draft board? TIA.

 You still trying to get my vote for Huddle's Best Fisherman? :D

Well, is there? TIA

Of course there is but you're just looking for trouble and the history we have of you not being a big fan of mine makes this a dead end discussion.

My apologies for being a part of getting this thread off target. Back to Gates, his injuries and the rest of the TE rankings...

I'm sorry too. I'll stop asking questions about a competing fantasy football site on the Huddle's message boards.

Gates? When you have a young QB, the TE is an easy target, and one that is hardly ever a difficult throw to make. As that QB gets older and the game slows down, the TE will become less of an option. So, Gates has peaked, not to say he won't be good, or a great Fantasy TE, but the gap has been closed. LT, Chambers, VJax....Gates will just be a great option and never again the #1 options each and every week. Same goes for Witten when Romo gets another strong WR to team up with TO. Witten has another year left of stellar numbers. Winslow would be #1 on the board next year, but I'll check with this other site's draft board to see what it says.

Tootie, do you actually subscribe to the Huddle, or do you just use the free message boards? TIA.
