The Saints Are Working on Taking Jeremy Shockey Off the Giants' Hands

Kind of a little shocker with the clock ticking towards free agency, but here's an interesting tidbit from Chris Mortensen -- the Saints made a trade offer to the Giants for happy-go-lucky complete team player Jeremy Shockey.

Now let's take all of this with a grain of salt -- standard Mortensenian operating procedure -- but if true, it makes sense. The Saints' offense has lacked a truly dynamic tight end. Billy Miller has played well, but he and Eric Johnson haven't made a real impact on the offense, and both are unrestricted free agents. Paired with Marques Colston, the two could do wonders for the Saints' red-zone offense.

Beyond that, Sean Payton and Shockey are familiar with each other from Payton's days in New York, and Shockey has stated on occasion that Payton was the driving force behind his early development. Re-joining Payton in a change of scenery might make dude a little cheerier. He'll also be free from the most cancerous relationship he has in New York, with Eli Manning.

Shockey won't be able to push around Drew Brees, the team's unquestioned leader and most respected player, like he did Manning, and Brees will get him the ball enough to keep him happy.

If Mortensen is on the ball with this report, that is.

This would be a win for both teams if the Giants can get any value out of this trade. Hell, I'd take any day one pick for him.

Absolutely. I would even take an early day 2. Shockey is a great TE but he doesnt have the team chemistry with the Giants team. I think he needs a change of scenary to be good. Plus, I think Boss is a good replacement. He might not be as good as Shockey in blocking but he shows big play ability.

I agree a win for both teams here if anything happens.

Well that's a bit much only getting a day 2 pick for Shockey, regardless of his current standing with Eli and the Giants. It'd have to be an earlier pick for a deal to get done IMO.

Look, even franchise type guys are not drawing a lot of value in terms of draft picks. Teams value picks over a proven veteran although I can't understand why. I seriously doubt the Giants can get more than a second rounder for him. No way they get a second and a third.

I just don't by that the Giants are better without him. I like Boss but he isn't a pro bowl TE yet.

Unless trading Shockey frees up much needed cap space keep him.

the Giants have over 20 million in cap room from what ive heard...also found this which doesnt bode well for Gibril Wilson in a Giants uniform next season.

Shockey a Saint?

Driving in to work today, I caught ESPN's Chris Mortensen talking on a New York sports talk radio show.

The question was about the New York Giants' situation at safety, then Mortensen dropped this morsel.

He said the Saints have talked to the Giants about tight end Jeremy Shockey. And that the Giants would be interested in a safety in return.

For the New York audience, that suggests Gibril Wilson might be leaving as a free agent.

For the Louisiana listeners, wow.

First of all, isn't the Saints' biggest problem on defense? I realize they could upgrade the tight end position with a healthy Shockey. And maybe the desire to add him says something about what they got from their receivers on the outside last year.

It's just that I would target defense before I would worry with the offense.

Mortensen went on to say that the Giants aren't shopping Shockey. And that other teams have also inquired about him.

Still, it's an interesting idea for Saints fans to ponder if nothing else.

1st rounder or hold him

They can't trade Shockey for just a 2nd. 2nd & 3rd maybe.

Addition by subtraction has already proved to be true with Shockey pertaining to the Giants franchise, and I think it's only going to get worse. This guy didn't even want to be at the super bowl to support his own team. I think it's a win win situation for both teams if they come to an agreement.
