Kanas City Chiefs sign Ravens wide receiver Devard Darling

2008-03-11 14:51

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent wide receiver Devard Darling on Tuesday, shoring up the receiving corps after the release of Eddie Kennison.

Darling, Baltimore's third-round pick in 2004, played in 30 games in four seasons for the Ravens, catching 20 passes for 331 yards with three touchdowns. Eighteen of those catches came in 2007, when he played in every game.

In college, Darling played his freshman season at Florida State before transferring to Washington State after the death of his brother, Devaughn. Devaughn Darling died in 2001 at 18 of an apparent cardiac arrhythmia during an offseason workout at Florida State.

The brothers learned they had a genetic blood disorder, known as a sickle cell trait, from a physical before their freshman year at the school. Medical examiners said the disorder may have contributed to the death, although no definitive medical cause was cited.

The 35-year-old Kennison played for the Chiefs for seven seasons and was their top receiver for most of that time. He was limited by hamstring and shoulder injuries to only eight games last season, catching 13 passes for 101 yards.

Raiders add Drew Carter

Carter was a fifth-round draft pick of the Panthers in 2004. He started seven games in 2007, catching 38 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns — all career highs.

I doubt they target a WR in the second round now after Carter and Walker.

They'll go DT & OT.

Packers signed OLB Brandon Chillar to a two-year, $5.2 million contract. Another $800,000 is available in incentives.

Chillar doesn't possess the upside most 25-year-olds do, but isn't weak in any area and plays a hard to find position on the strong side. Brady Poppinga will likely now come off the bench, though there will be competition. The Pack will have linebacker depth in 2008, something it got away without last year.

More competition and depth, as well as one less position to worry about early in the draft.

I thought he was headed to Arizona, but I guess they didn't have the cap space.

He's taking Poppinga's job.

Well I said competition since he wasn't given the job yet and will "compete" in camp, but it's obvious he is better all around and will bump Brady to ST. He is comfortable in all 3 LB spots too, so between him and Bishop we'll be ok if one guy goes down.

Do re-signings count in this thread?

Packers re-signed SS Atari Bigby, an exclusive rights free agent.

He started all 16 games in 2007 and finished with 86 tackles, five picks, and nine passes defended. The light seemed to flip on for Bigby late in the year when he emerged as a solid run supporter and a big hitter in the passing game. Bigby will be worth a long look as a DB2 this season in IDP leagues.

Shantee Orr signs 1-year deal with Browns

Browns signed LB Shantee Orr to a one-year contract, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Orr finally gets the chance to play in a 3-4 that suits his skills. The 26-year-old will likely be given the chance to compete with Willie McGinest and Antwan Peek for playing time off the edge. Orr had seven sacks in 2005.

Quinn Gray to the Texans :D

Rosenfels possibly to be traded? Maybe not, since they got Gray for cheap.

Still don't understand why the Jags didn't sign Gray, a guy who knew their system, for cheap. Instead they bring in Cleo Lemon and pay more for him.

Maybe it is because Quinn Gray s*cks???? Cleo Lemon is a clear upgrade at the back up spot.

Steelers agreed to terms with DT Anthony McFarland, formerly of the Colts.

It's a little surprising Booger passed a physical considering he's coming off a torn patellar tendon and isn't expected to be ready for Week 1. McFarland has very little experience in a 3-4, but could help in a rotation at defensive end. He isn't a threat to Brett Keisel or Aaron Smith's starting jobs. Mar. 26 - 12:32 am et

Apparently his workout sucked, so he won't be signed.
