Furd
I thawd a frozen pork tenderloin yesterday, and I wanted an inexpensive red to go with it. For $11, I picked up a 2006 Alamos Malbec (my first bottle of malbec). I was pleasantly surpised. I tasted (I don't have a sophisticated palate) black cherry and plum, with kinda a sweet finish. It was a good companion to the pork. Not the greatest of wines, but one that I'll buy again. I'd recommend it if you haven't tried a malbec, because its easier to pour out (or save for cooking) an $11 bottle.
detlef
Dude, welcome to the promised land of Malbec. I really feel that there is no wine that consistently over-delivers for the money like Malbec. Look for Guggenheim Malbec. I pay $6 wholesale for it, so it should be less than $10 in stores. Stuff's off the hook. Also, when you want to step up a bit and pay closer to $20, they can be amazing. Catena comes to mind. Actually, it escapes me, but I think that Alamos is Catena's entry level line. Either that or they're imported by the same group. I forget. I buy it for $9.99 at my wine shop all the time.

Black beeires and plum sauce are often used to describe Malbec's so maybe your palate is more "sophisticated" than you thought!! Mocha, figs and toast come to mind and it is a great companion to pork... I love to pair it with a pork tenderloin with a blueberry balsamic reduction...
