kpholmes
I've always considered Smith to be a top 10 DE. Don't understand why the Bengals didn't tag him or pay him what he's worth. Was he just unhappy in Cinncy? Or am I missing something else?
piratesownninjas
They franchised him last year, and while he did put up 102 tackles, he only yielded 2 sacks. I think they were just at a point where the team and the player just didn't match up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was pretty clear last year that they were not going to get a long term extension done...

Avernus
not a bad move for the Niners at all if true... they are going to come out of nowhere in a year or two..
budlitebrad
It was confirmed this morning. The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

By then they'll have a quarterback? Now they need to find one of those, and rid themselves of Martz.

He did a good job of that while in Detroit...
The Irish Doggy
Justin is very good against the run, but has never been a very good pass rusher. Very durable and consistent player. Overall solid football player. The reason the Bengals didn't resign him are primarily money related and secondly targeting a change to a 3-4 with more emphasis on QB pressure (or at least that's the rumor). If they do, they are betting heavily on Odell Thurman and Ahmad Brooks at MLB - to heavily IMO. No matter what, they will target the D line and OLB in the draft which looks to be very nice sitting at 1.9 to pick up a good player for one of those spots. Also, they will have an extra compensatory pick in round 3 to build on. Edited March 2, 2008 by The Irish Doggy
