If they fumble and turn over the ball to the other team (the original offense team for that play), barring any other change of possession or scoring, that team gets first and 10 regardless of the down and spot of ball in the last play. Bronco Billy Posted March 11, 2008 Share Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) It depends upon whether you are talking about possession of the ball by rule, or how yardage assigned and TDs scored are ruled. As soon as any player on a team gains possession of the ball, by rule that team is the offensive team. However, return yards and TDs scored after a change of possession are not assigned offensive yardage categorically, but rather are assigned return yardage depending upon the type of turnover (punt, kickoff, INT, or fumble). If you wanted to get really technical, you could assign return yardage of any kind as offensive yardage gained, but it is tracked typically as separate category. This is most probably because receiving yards, rushing yards, and passing yards are considered "yards from scrimmage", whereas return yards are not - they are meaured from the point where possession changed.
