Stewart may need surgery

NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart may need surgery on his big toe. The procedure would keep him out four to six months.

Stewart suffered a turf toe injury in November and didn't miss any games. He also ran the forty at the Combine, but performed no shuttle or cone drills. In the meantime, he had MRIs done and doctors recommended he undergo surgery. Individual teams will evaluate whether surgery is required. Expected to be a first-round pick, his stock will fall dramatically with any team who doesn't medically clear him.

If he ran last year on that turf toe (which he suppsoedly injured at OSU), I'd hate to see what he can do at 100%. While the initial impression might be that this will cause his stock to drop, I think a smart GM will see a guy who will play hurt & be damn productive doing it. He won't miss preseason by the looks of it, and RBs have a relatively small learning curve.

I'd tend to agree. Adrian Peterson's shoulder presented a similar issue last year, and we see how that worked out.

Charles Rogers could also be added to that list, no? He had the clavicle issues in college and then broke the same clavicle in the pros.

Actually, no, he didn't have any clavicle issue in college--he did have a hairline fracture in his pinky finger at the time of the draft, but it only held him out of like the first week of his rookie TC. He broke the clavicle midway through his rookie year, and they allowed it to heal naturally. His second season, he broke the clavicle again (in a different place, depending on who you ask and who you believe) and they fixed it with steel pins and plates. The theory was he was so thin that his shoulders didn't have enough meat to protect the joints, so if he landed on a shoulder all the impact went straight through the joint to the collarbone . . .

Anyway, you give a guy with a hard-partying lifestyle and gangster friends from high school $12M in cash and most of two years off . . . suddenly he loses his passion for the game (if in fact he ever had any). Go figure. The Lions are suing to get the money back, but it's long since spent. Sad story.

This situation will be similar to the Magehee situation a couple years ago (although Stewarts injury is not nearly as serious) in that a rookie RB with very good skills will drop down to the second half of the first round and make a serious impact for whatever team drafts him after the halfway point through the season.

Stewarts combination of size, speed, and skillz will translae into a very good NFL RB.

The time frame is 4-6 months... If it's six months he'll probably end up on the Pup list...

Unless they delay the surgery, I'd be willing to wager that he'd play no later than preseason week 3.

Edit - I just saw that whatever team picks him will have to make the decision on surgery. That might push him back into the regular season before he's ready, though I would imagine that his rehab would be in the 4 month range rather than 6 months.. Then again, he may not need surgery at all...

Surgery today:

http://blog.oregonlive.com/nfl/2008/03/jon...as_surgery.html

"NFLDraftScout.com analyst Rob Rang said the injury shouldn't hurt Stewart's stock much, if at all.

Rang, who was at the combine, said teams were already aware of the injury and the potential that Stewart could need surgery.

Rang said that a team eyeing Stewart in the first round likely won't pass on him because of this injury, even though lower-leg injuries are always a concern for running backs.

"At the end of the day you just have to turn on the film and you can see that the kid can play," Rang said."

ETA: In that blog entry they say minimum 3 months, but it is a homer-region-zine.
