Deuce may be cut tomorrow

Rumors being thrown around from some fairly good sources saying the Saints may cut Deuce McAllister tomorrow. :D I'm hoping it's just to restructure his contract. I can't tell you how bad it would make me feel to see my favorite Saints player of all time go out like this. :D

Yeah I always liked Deuce(except that one game where he carved up the Packers like a Thanksgiving turkey ). He handled the Bush situation like a pro and team player. Maybe it is to re-sign him later to save cap space.

McAllister, Saints delay bonus payment

by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

Friday March 14, 2008, 4:35 PM

The Saints and tailback Deuce McAllister agreed to push back his $1 million roster bonus from March 15 to April 15, giving the team a better chance to gauge his health before making any financial decisions.

McAllister, 29, is recovering from surgery on both of his knees in late September. He expects to be ready for the team's summer minicamp (usually around June 1). But he said he was agreeable to the postponement because it gives him more time to prove he'll "make good on the investment."

"I think honestly if I would have pushed for it, I think I could have gotten it. But in doing that, they probably would have wanted to lower my pay," said McAllister, who is scheduled to receive a salary of $3.6 million this season, in addition to the $1 million roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus.

Of course, the Saints might still ask McAllister to take a pay cut next month. But McAllister will be further along in his rehab, which will put him in a better bargaining position.

"It's pretty much both parties working together," he said. "It's not something they were interested in doing if I was healthy. But at the same time, they want to make sure they're protected."

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis declined to expand on the decision, saying that there is no need to read too much into it and that both sides were in agreement.

Huge sigh of relief and it, yet again, shows how much class Deuce has by not trying to force their hand. I know that part of why he's doing it is because he wants to keep his current salary, but it also shows his commitment and desire to play for the Saints.

With two blown out knees and micro-fracture surgery on the right knee, how effective will be? Yeah - its sad to see him go, but I think it would be sadder to see him play and struggle or the team...I am sure the team will make the right decision, it might not be what the fans like.

I guess I didn't ever realize he had micro-fracture surgery on his right knee till now.... If I'm not mistaken they said he was getting it scoped at the same time as the ACL surgery. Guess that wasn't the full truth.....

"McAllister said when asked to compare his recovery to his 2006 timetable. "The ACL is fine. We just want to be careful with the right knee as far as the microfracture is concerned. We want to make sure they heal extensively and not aggravate them.

"Without the surgery on the right one, I would have been doing some hard planting by now."

I just saw this myself-

When Deuce McAllister had ACL surgery on his left knee last September, he also had a microfracture procedure on his troublesome right knee.

It was originally reported as arthroscopic, but Deuce confirmed it was actually microfracture, "The ACL is fine. We just want to be careful with the right knee as far as the microfracture is concerned." Some microfracture procedures are more severe than others, and though McAllister's was not extensive, this news explains his slow recovery time. It's also going to lead to an expanded role for Pierre Thomas if McAllister doesn't show accelerated recovery by next month. Mar. 15 - 9:10 am et

Pierre Thomas is going to get a big role in that offense at some point. Hes looked very good every time hes had a chance. I mean hes only 23 and 100yds rushing 120yds 1td recieving in your only start in week 17 says something. He made A.Pittman expendable, a player NO spent a decent draft pick on last year. He kep R.Mendenhall on the bench at Illinois. Im surprised more people arent talking about him

I talked him up quite a bit last year. This year I'm not as sure. I know he can play, but I question how the Saints will use him. He's not the straight North-South runner that they like to use in combination with Bush and he's not the greatest pass blocker. He seemed to be more of a single set back and I have to wonder if or how that will fit into the Saints offense.

Update?

Deuce McAllister (knee surgeries) is shooting to be ready for the Saints' May 29 minicamp.

"If rehab continues to go as well, then it’s possible I can participate," he said. That is, if McAllister is still on the roster. He has until April 15, when his $1 million roster bonus is due, to convince the Saints he can contribute.

Looks like tomorrow is the big day.....

Interesting news could be coming for the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday as running back Deuce McAllister is due his $1 million roster bonus and the 2008 schedule will be announced by the league.

McAllister's bonus was pushed back a month so the team can have more time to evaluate the status of his surgically repaired knees. He's due to make $3.6 million in base salary and may be asked to take a pay cut to remain on the team.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis did not respond to an e-mail sent Monday inquiring about McAllister's status.

This decision will play a very large roll in the Saints draft plans as well as the draft plans of the teams closely in front and behind them.

If Deuce is released then my mock 2nd round pick of Forte is not a reach at all!

Cool. He's one player I think would look out of place in another uniform.

I am very happy to hear this. I hope it is accurate and Deuce can be a productive member of the Saints offense this season.

Yep.

And even if he's not productive, good for the Saints for not kicking him to the curb like many teams seem to do these days. Nice to see longevity matters still.

McAllister Safe For Training Camp

It's being reported that the Saints and RB Deuce McAllister have an agreement that will keep McAllister on the roster into training camp.

It sounds like the team wants to give McAllister every chance possible to make the roster before the season starts. If McAllister stays in New Orleans for this season, he is nothing more than an RB3 until he shows he is fully recovered from his knee surgeries.

McAllister pleased with arrangement

Posted by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune April 17, 2008 11:00AM

Categories: Saints

Deuce McAllister said he and the Saints both came away with some protection after he agreed to restructure part of his salary and bonus payments into incentive clauses for the 2008 season.

The Saints are protected from paying their veteran tailback's full salary if he is unable to return to form after surgeries on both of his knees last September.

And McAllister has a little more long-term job security. The team will now be less likely to cut him, even if he is limited by the injury during training camp.

"I don't think there was ever any doubt of me getting a shot (to come back from the injury)," McAllister said Thursday. "I think it was more so working to figure out how we can both be protected in this thing, because I plan to be here for more than just this year. I've still got a few good years left in me."

McAllister, 29, is signed through the 2012 season. He was scheduled to earn $3.6 million in salary this season, plus $1.1 million in bonuses.

He didn't go into specific detail about the restructured contract arrangement. But he did acknowledge that the Saints paid him "a portion" of the $1 million roster bonus he was due by April 15. He also said if he plays at his usual level, "then the salary will pretty much be the same."

McAllister said the contract talks never got bitter or contentious.

"In my instance, I know New Orleans has treated me kindly, and I think it goes vice versa," he said. "So I think it was probably in my best interest, as well as the team's best interest, that we just try to see if we can get something worked out."

Neither side played the role of martyr in this deal; both the team and player were looking out for their own best interests. McAllister didn't exactly want to be thrown into the free-agent pool at a time when his value is at a low point.

"I don't know if it's necessarily a loyalty deal," McAllister said. "It's just both parties trying to work out an agreement that's in the best interest of both parties involved."

The Saints declined to comment on the contract arrangement, but coaches and team executives have repeatedly praised McAllister for his value to the team both on and off the field. Without question, the Saints are rooting for McAllister to make a full recovery, no matter what the price tag.

McAllister said he is confident that will be the case. He has begun to do some running in his workouts, with occasional cutting and planting. He still is taking it easy, but he's hoping he might be able to participate in the team's summer minicamp (usually around June 1).

"We want to be able to say we participated in some of that minicamp," said McAllister, who had surgery on his left knee to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, plus microfracture surgery on his right knee to stimulate cartilage growth. "By training camp we want to be either at 100 percent or close to 100 percent. And obviously by the season, you want to be 100 percent."

McAllister came back from a torn ACL in the right knee two years ago.

"I'm not necessarily full speed, but I am doing some running, just trying to push myself as far as possible," McAllister said. "There (have not been) necessarily any setbacks or anything that's not foreseen. There's going to be the normal soreness and stiffness or whatever, but we're able to work through it and still get some good work in."

In the next week or two, McAllister will return to Birmingham, Ala., where the surgeries were performed by Dr. James Andrews, for a checkup and some additional rehab. He has primarily been training in Metairie throughout the team's offseason workout program.

"I think next week I'll be right at seven months," said McAllister, who suffered the injury Sept. 24 during a Monday night game against Tennessee. "That's typically around the time when you can go out and do mainly all your exercises with the ACL. I just have to try to be careful that I don't try to overextend myself knowing I had microfracture (surgery) as well on the other knee."

McAllister, who ranks as the Saints' all-time leading rusher with 5,678 yards, said his goal is to be the same back he's always been.

"One of the things that you always try to expand on is just try to be explosive," he said. "I know I can go out there and get 3 or 4 yards a carry, but I just want to be explosive and have some of the longer 20-plus-yard runs. That's what I want to be able to do."
