Hackett Hackett impressed with Panthers Hackett should be the #2 WR starting opposite Steve Smith this fall, giving us another weapon on offense. Reasonable deal for both sides at 2 years for $3.5MM. PSULions Posted March 17, 2008 Author Share Posted March 17, 2008 With signing Moose (most likely our #3) and now Hackett to start opposite Steve Smith our WR corps is much improved compared to last year's Carter and Colbert that both had a chance to grab the opportunity to grab the starter's job, but were unable to make a significant impact for the offense, hence, the Panthers not offering a contract to either of them. Now, we can focus our draft to OT, DL, S and RB and not grab another WR on day one to give us a another threat on offense. This also will take the pressure off Jarrett and let Moose mentor him and allow him to develop with another year of experience before he has to step up into a bigger role with the team. Based on what I have been hearing on the radio and seeing in the local paper, everything seems to be going very well for Jake's rehab and will be able to start camp when they head to Spartanburg in July. Jake progressing well Wtih Matt Moore looking good in the last three games, I think we are actually in better shape with the QB spot then we were last year when Carr was brought in backup Jake and played horribly. No, but I think they are viewing him in a #4 roll to give him some more time to learn the offense and work his way onto the field. I am just glad the Panthers are banking on him to compete for the #2 spot and not pressuring him to produce. Based on his poor rookie season, they did not want to rely on him as the #2 or #3 guy as I think they got burned last year when the release Keyshawn hoping either Colbert or Carter would take the opportunity to start and run with it and both were dissappointments. They didn't want to make the same mistakes, hence, Moose coming back a few weeks ago and waiting out the market to come up with a reasonable deal to land Hackett. If Jarrett can't get past a guy as old as Methusala and an UDFA with injury issues by midseason, we may be looking at sticking him with a bust label. I was kinda thinking it would be just the oppposite. I think Moose is just getting a little older and may be better suited as a #3 guy. I sort of see Moose in the Ricky Proehl role of a few years ago where he comes up with the key catches to get the 1st when it is 3rd and 8. Good blocker, goes over the middle, etc. but not sure he can be a consistent #2 guy any more. Hackett has missed several games over the past few years, but that is why we got a reasonable year for his services for 2 years. When he is healthy is can make plays and hopefully, he will be on the field to help the offense, instead of on the sidelines nursing an ankle sprain. Even if he does miss sometime with injuries, the 2 year deal he signed is pretty reasonable compared to Colbert getting 3 years for $7.2MM from the Broncos or Walker getting 6 years for $55MM. Hackett is by far a bargain compared to these signings!! All that I can say is that I like our WR corps now, much better now that it was last year! Kudos to Fox and Hurney for upgrading our WR's. I would think that this is the best set of receivers that Delhomme has ever had - easily. Smith is an elite, Hackett is a great #2 and Muhammad can hold down the #3 spot and offer possession catches at least until Jarrett decides he is in the NFL now and steps up. Add in dumping Foster who was never more than a below-average RB and potentially picking up another to pair with DeAngelo Williams and this offense should be better than it has ever been. And Delhomme has thrown up to 29 TDs in a season (2004) before with a lesser cast. If Hackett is the #3 here and Muhammad is the #2, it will be like in NE with #3 Wes Welker (maybe not that good but still) and Stallworth manning a rarely used #2. Moose is still the superior blocker for the running game and that was a major weakness for the Panthers last year. I think it may be determined by the play calling rather than the actual depth chart. He played in 36 of the Seahawks 72 games during his 4-year stint with the club, including 22 of the last 36. He's been productive at times, but not altogether healthy. Really started to shine when Seneca Wallace played for Hasselbeck in 2006. Nice complimentary player, but not a #2. As can be seen by every team in the NFL passing on his demands of more than $3 mil per. And in order to catch the ball, one has to have someone throw the ball. So don't send Hackett to Honolulu just yet. Ben Obomanu and Courtney Taylor are at WR for the Seahawks, in addition to Bobby Engram and Nate Burleson, and whatever the situation is with Deion Branch. Perhaps another addition will come later, but I don't really see this as a position of weakness for the club. In 2007, Engram was the first Seattle WR to go over 1000 since 2004, Hasselbeck's health has more to do with the WR situation than the personnel. The article also mentioned that he was placed on IR in his first season as the Seahawks needed his roster spot for someone else, but he was not actually hurt that year. Then with his high ankle sprain from last year he earn the tag of injury prone, costing him money when he became a FA this offseason. This contract gives him a decent salary and two years to prove himself to the Panthers before he tries to break the bank with two nice, productive seasons with the Panthers. Regardless of how well he does, or not, he is worth the risk of grabbing a veteran WR at a reasonable price just in the fact that his contract is not prohibitive, nor a long-term deal. Both Hackett and the Panthers will have a chance to re-visit his contract should the Panthers get a young, productive WR for the duration of his contract and he can get paid when he is established and still young at 28. It will be interesting to see how much he contributes next year. Based on every other GM that had a little cap space to sign a WR for two years, it isn't expected to be much.
