Furd
Messrs. Lambert, Ham and Russell might have something to say about that.
trrhyne
How about LT, Harry Carson, Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson, with Gary Reasons as a back-up 2 Hall of Famers, and 4 made Pro Bowl appearances
Outshined
As it was stated, they were not surrounded by a good d-line. I think they have to rank right up there.
McNasty
How about LT, Harry Carson, Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson, with Gary Reasons as a back-up 2 Hall of Famers, and 4 made Pro Bowl appearances My first thought, too. Brutal.
Pope Flick
Singletary, Wilbur Marshall, Otis Wilson and Ron Rivera as backup. Straight gangsta.
rajncajn
Messrs. Lambert, Ham and Russell might have something to say about that. I'd have to agree, this group does rank right up there, but they did have a pretty good supporting cast. How about LT, Harry Carson, Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson, with Gary Reasons as a back-up 2 Hall of Famers, and 4 made Pro Bowl appearances Honestly, how many of those guys would have amounted to anything if it hadn't been for LT? Harry Carson deserves to be in the HoF, but honestly I'd take Ricky Jackson, Sim Mills or Pat Swilling over him any day. Singletary, Wilbur Marshall, Otis Wilson and Ron Rivera as backup. Straight gangsta. Again, without Singletary what would this group be?

Wilbur Marshall was a man amongst boys. He was the original Free Agent that busted the cap. And if you want to slouch on Wilson and Rivera then you're being a hater. Bill Swerski
How about LT, Harry Carson, Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson, with Gary Reasons as a back-up 2 Hall of Famers, and 4 made Pro Bowl appearances It's REALLY difficult to say, but I'd give it to these guys, with the mid '80s Bears and early '90s Saints crews coming in very closely behind. Furd
Top to bottom- Lambert: 9 Pro Bowls, H of F inductee Ham: 8 Pro Bowls, H of F inductee Russell: 7 Pro Bowls ISMHO, Carl Banks takes his crew out of the running. The Saints crew has fewer Pro Bowls and no H of F ers. FWIW

Azazello1313
Again, without Singletary what would this group be? about as good as the saints crew? seriously, i loved that squad with mills and jackson in the late 80s/early 90s. they were an awesome LB corps, no question. hard to call them the best ever, though. the steelers and giants groups mentioned would easily have to be ahead of them, and probably the bears group too. while we're on the subject, i'll throw out a dominant, but underrated trio from the broncos orange crush era: randy gradishar, tom jackson, bob swenson

Rovers
Silly arguement..... if it weren't for LT? Take Ham out of that Steeler D. Take Dent out of Chicago? Those 3 teams had the best LB corps of all time. I could not pick one over the other. They are on a tier of their own, and no other LB corp comes close to those 3 legendary units. Anyone who would diss Harry Carson simply because he shared the field with LT didn't watch those Giant teams. I could argue it was Carson that made LT so good, being able to free lance the way he did. I didn't watch the link.... but rajn, you aren't trying to compare the N.O. new (and injured) LB corp to any of these units, are you? If you can't give any credit to the Saints LB crew then you didn't watch them either. and since someone brought up Pro Bowl selections... Rickey Jackson - * 6x Pro Bowl selection (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1992, 1993) Sacks 136 Pat Swilling - * 5x Pro Bowl selection (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993) * 1991 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Sacks 107.5 Sam Mills - * 5x Pro Bowl selection (1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1996) Vaughn Johnson - * 4x Pro Bowl selection (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992) and as for the HoF the only reason Rickey Jackson will never make it is because he played for the hapless Saints and I'm sure a large number of NFL people would agree. If the Saints had won a Super bowl during that era then you would probably see both Jackson & Swilling there. No, I take that back....it would have been called a fluke & the Saints still wouldn't get any credit for it. rajncajn
Just a couple of defensive unit stats that were posted on the Saints forum... Rushing and Passing td's allowed were: 1986 - 11/21, 1987 - 6/25, 1988 - 7/19, 1989 - 10/23, 1990 - 8/21 1991 - 6/12, 1992 - 8/13 The defense never allowed more than 11 rushing td's in an entire season. Take a look at 91 & 92 total td's They had a streak in 1989 of 90 consecutive games of keeping a rusher under 100 yards and in 1991 they didn't allow an opposing offense to score a touchdown for five and half games (Tampa scored in the 2nd half of their game).
