keggerz
right now on NFLN Jimmy Johnson just said that: "I didn't want my assistant coaches falling in love with these players because I knew i was gonna cut em at the end of the year. I wouldnt let them start any of those players even thought they were better then what we were starting because i knew i was gonna exercise my option to take the draft picks." The narrator then said: "By benching his best players Johnson sabotaged the season..." edit: this is from NFLN's top 10 worst teams ever (that cowboy team that went 1-15 was #8) edit 2: to remove the words to paraphrase JJ because I got it word for word from the show...cept he may have said 'em instead of them Edited April 2, 2008 by keggerz

keggerz
JJ Tanked ? nope, he decided to rebuild thru the draft...even if it meant cutting players that would have started over the ones he kept on the team wonder if JJ is related to BB (JJ did sorta support him) Edited April 2, 2008 by keggerz
kcmast
Not playing your best players so that you get draft picks? Sounds like tanking to me.

Seahawks21
Thats not exactly what he did. I have heard this referenced before. He didn't want the fans, coaches or teammates to get used to those other veteran players, so there would be less emotion involved in and less opposition to completely rebuilding. He didn't do it to get higher picks, he did it so it would be apparent that they had to improve through the draft, and everybody would be on board. A football town like Dallas would not have let him rebuild through the draft unless it was very apparent that they needed to do so. So, he had to shimmy things to make it apparent. Smart. Randall
JJ Tanked ? I knew it. They didn't deserve Troy Aikman. They tanked on purpose to get the top pick.

Smart. go watch the show on NFLN...he explicitly states that he didnt want the coaches to get attached to them because he was going to exercise the draft pick options and he also said they were better then the guys they were starting. it was straight from his mouth. You need to restudy your history.... Jimmy did not start the players becuase the Vikings gave the ability to exchange the players he got in the Walker trade for draft picks if they "did not work out". Jimmy was going to cut the players to get the draft picks. Smart yes, didn't do it to get draft picks, yeah right. The Vikings made the most idiotic trade in the history of the NFL but don't for one minute think that JJ did not take advantage of the trade language to get extra picks from the Vikings instead of keeping players. peteteacher2001
So Cowboy fans, who did you end up getting with those Minny picks exactly? I never really thought about ALL of them.

He did it to get picks, period, not to move up as was implied earlier in the thread. it was never implied he did it to MOVE UP...i said he specifically(actually HE SAID IT) cut players(vikes he got in the deal) that he knew were better then the ones he was going to start to get the draft picks....in doing so he KNOWINGLY was starting players that sucked more then the original options he had. i dont know where you think it was implied but if you point it out I will surely correct it because that was never meant to be implied. Seahawks21
99% of the time in sports, the word "tanking" is only used to describe how bad teams lose games purposely to improve their draft position. "Tanking" just doesn't seem like the right choice of words here. We have the same viewpoint, but the fact that the word "tanking" came into the equation could mislead people into thinking he did this to improve draft position.
