NFL fumbles Bills game in Toronto

By Scott Stewart - A View From The Sidelines

Apr 15, 2008

Large Medium Small Print This Article Tell a friend How important is the National Football League to the sporting world? Today is like a holiday in the US, as the League unveils its 2008 regular season schedule.

We knew a few games from week one going in: the Giants vs Redskins in the Thursday night opener, as well as the now-traditional Monday Night doubleheader to close the week. What we didn’t know was the rest.

The rest of the schedule was announced at 2 pm this afternoon, and if you heard a large amount of loud expletives from down the QEW, it’s because the NFL has completely screwed over the Buffalo Bills.

Earlier this year, Bills owner Ralph Wilson announced that eight Bills games over the next five years would be played at the Rogers Centre, including this season. We already knew the Pittsburgh Steelers would be the pre-season opponents, but today, it was revealed that the Miami Dolphins would oppose the Bills on December 7.

I’m not a Buffalo fan by any stretch of the imagination, but this bothers me tremendously. How the League can take one of, if not THE most important game on the home schedule away from the loyal fans in Western New York is beyond me. The Dolphins are, hands down, the Bills’ biggest rivals, and moving the game north is a slap in the face to Buffalo’s fan base.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think the League would schedule a division game in Toronto, especially the Dolphins. I thought for sure it would have been San Francisco mainly because, and this is not to disrespect the 49ers, it would have been a less significant game.

The game here is obviously going to sell out. They could have taken any horrible team and put them in the opponent’s spot; there would still be 54,000 butts in the seats.

With the Bills improving more and more every year and the Dolphins likely to be better than last year’s train wreck, the game is certainly going to be entertaining. It’s just a shame the real fans won’t be able to see it.
