keith rivers and the patriots

Recommended Posts

id already seen a couple of mocks that had us taking rivers...and finally reading the mock don banks dropped yesterday....im sold...as much as somebody like gholston intrigues me....the reality is....we already have a gholston in adalius thomas...i thought adalius played his best game of the year in the superbowl....he was pretty tough to handle coming off the edge....and its important for the patriots to keep him there....rivers has sideline to sideline atlheticsm and the ability to play the pass from the inside position(something we know that killed the patriots in 06)

i love the scenario banks painted....pats trading down a couple spots to the saints who might be hot for sedrick ellis...we pick up a pick in the process which well probably use to move up for a targeted player later

A trade with the Saints might be possible, but I can't see Rivers as an ILB for the Pats. I don't know the player a well as many here, but I know most people consider him to be best suited at WLB and there's no way he replaces Adalius Thomas on the outside.

a lot of 'us' and 'we' references in this post....you work or suit up for the Patriots???

Just bustin'.....always get a chuckle when someone refers to that We won the championship, or we lost it......we didnt, they did....!

that being said, would be shocked if the Pats grabbed Rivers.......if Gholston or Ellis aren't there (strong possibility they wont be), I can see the Pats grabbing a DB or trading down.....It would be the best thing for us.....ooops, i mean, them!!

 Without the fans what would the game be? We pay their salaries, why can't we consider ourselves part of the team too?

I'm defending fidtml, what is the world coming to? :D

Cuz we don't draft the team....we don't compete, and we don't win or lose.....I know a lot of people say us and we, but when the team loses, its they and them.....

Just having some fun......thats all....!

I disagree again. When the Saints lose it's still us. Unless you are a fair weather fan (you're not going to find many here either), you live & die with your team.

point taken....Perhaps it was a stupid comment on my part, was just having fun...i am a die hard Pats and Red Sox fan, and win and lose with THEM.....but, never was one to say, hey, cant believe WE swept the World Series....I had ZERO to do with the outcome of the game.....Thats all i was trying to say.....

Didn't mean to make a big deal out of it.....Just posting my observations...Perhaps he does have ties to the Patriots...works in the front office, and thus, it would be WE will draft Rivers.......

I still have two tickets on my bulletin board that never got used.......10/16/2005......Saints vs Falcons, at the Super Dome......Buddy was going down for business and wanted me to tag along and we got tickets to the game....And then Mother Nature reared its ugly head....How are things where you are??

have friends heading down next Thursday to Jazz Fest.....wish i could have joined them, haven't been to New Orleans since '98.....

That would be some great tickets to have, but the one's I would have liked to have most is the return home game. Would have loved to see that one in person.

Things here are pretty much back to normal here. The affects are still very visible along the coast lines and the place will never be the same, but they are making some nice improvement. Biloxi is trying it's best to become a resort town. We have at least one new casino (Jimmy Buffet's Margarittaville) being built & it's going to be huge and there are condo's going up left & right. The city is doing a lot of work on the beach, highway & gubment run tourist attractions and I've seen a few plans for some very nice coastal golf courses. It should be pretty nice in a few years and I think in about 5 more years only the locals will be able to see the scars.

The Pats just signed Victor Hobson to a 1-year deal and plan to play him in the middle. Not saying that he is an end-all answer, but it might be an indication that they will go in another direction with that early 1st round pick.

Agreed....if they can't get Gholston or Sedrick Ellis, seeing them go DB route, like McKelvin or trading down....although some mock drafts have them taking Ryan Clady (if he gets past KC).....

well i do sort of "live and die" with the pats...im a season ticket holder....and i take a road trip every year...last year went to indy...and already booked my trip for indy this year....i know saying "we" sounds a bit ridiculous...but i say it anyway

and as far as sedrick ellis....well don banks made a great point...the pats may be sending out a smoke screen on that front....because he is 6 foot....alot shorter than bb likes his tackles....ellis to me is a 4-3 tackle....not really a patriot guy.....

the hobson signing might say the pats would go in another direction with their pick...it also might say something about junior seaus future plans....who knows

as far as the "db route"....i wouldnt mind it.....but honestly...theyve brought in a very underrated fernando bryant....and word has it brandon merriweather may be making the move(maybe not permanently...but for the immediate future) to corner....theyv also brought in jason webster and lewis sanders....and of course theres ellis hobbs....

my dream would have them grabbing a linebacker or de/olb in the first....while doing the trade down with new orleans....then moving up in the 2nd to grab tracy porter from indiana(or whichever corner they prefer)

if you read carefully...i never said rivers would replace adalius thomas on the outside....i said plugging rivers inside could allow the patriots to keep thomas on the outside where he seems to be most effective....also most scouts agree he fits the patriots system as an inside guy

Is that right?

I think Rivers is a great prospect, but he's barely big enough to play WLB in a 4-3. For some reason, even pretty serious NFL fans can't seem to understand the need for bigger front-seven players in a 3-4. The DT is a nose tackle, so he's a mammoth -- usually 6-3 to 6-5 and preferably 320+. The DEs are converted DTs, and they're almost always 6-4 or 6-5, right around 300 even. The OLBs are converted DEs, so they're usually 6-3 or 6-4, 260ish lbs. The ILBs, especially in the Patriots' case, are either short college DEs (like Bruschi) or the biggest of college linebackers (like Claridge a couple of years ago); they're usually 6-1 to 6-3, and they have to be at least 245. Just ask Jonathan Vilma.

Of all the 3-4 teams, the Patriots are the most "loyal" to those height/weight guidelines. You won't see them take a LB in the first round, and you'd never see them willingly stick a 230-lb linebacker in the middle of their defense, just to watch him get pancaked repeatedly by guards an centers.

P.S. They also won't touch Sedrick Ellis. He's too short to disrupt passing lanes as a two-gapper.

Anyone mentioning Rivers going to NE in the first round doesn't pay attention to drafts. Period.

Certain coaches have M.O.s when it comes to player acquisition. A guy like Shanahan doesn't ever take a RB in the first round - and usually tries to acquire them later in the draft with a couple of exceptions, and he combs the WW for FAs castoffs from other teams that he has graded highly in the past. Belichick doesn't draft LBs on Day 1. He looks to acquire LBs through FA and may grab one in the 4th round or later.

Anyone who has a mock with NE taking a LB before the 4th round isn't doing their homework.

the only way that Rivers goes at NE's pick is if they trade out of that spot

lolol....but people that have the patriots taking a tackle at 7 are doing their homework??

cmon guys...rivers is is 6-2 1/4 and around 240 lbs

if we followed m.o.s then people who have the patriots taking a corner in round 1 arent doing their homework either

gee thanks for the breakdown swiss cheezhead....cuz i so said the patriots would really be interested in sedrick ellis!!

when is the last time the Pats took a LB in round 1 (Let alone that early)?

This is the same logic that said that the Patriots wouldn't take on a character issue guy like Moss, or shell out big money on Adalius Thomas... Heck, it wasn't so long ago that people were saying the Patriots would continue to be a conservative team on offense... BB and the Patriots have shown that they can adapt to any situation.
