Seahawks will release Shaun Alexander

By Danny O'Neil

Shaun Alexander's departure has been anticipated by some for more than a month.

Now his release appears imminent, according to a source close to the situation. He remains on the roster for now, but an announcement could happen later today or perhaps Wednesday.

Alexander underwent a physical examination this week. He was recovering from offseason surgery to repair a crack in his wrist.

Alexander is the franchise's career-leading rusher and the only Seahawk to win a league MVP award. The team told Alexander at the end of last season it would possibly look at running backs in the free-agent market. Once the Seahawks signed running backs T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones in free agency, many expected Alexander would be released.

Alexander was the NFL's most valuable player in 2005, when he ran for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns, both league highs. Alexander led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-10. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the third straight season in 2005.

His production has dropped the past two seasons, as he has battled injuries. In 2006, he was limited to 10 games, and finished with 896 yards, an average of 3.6 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns. Last year, the numbers were similar — 13 games, 716 rushing yards, 3.5 average, four touchdowns.

In eight NFL seasons, all with the Seahawks, Alexander has rushed for 9,429 yards, which ranks 25th all-time. He has 100 rushing touchdowns (seventh-best all-time) and another 12 TDs receiving. His total of 112 touchdowns is 14th best in NFL history.

If my team needed a back, I wouldn't have a problem giving a 1 year deal with tons of incentives.

I would expect that is the only kind of contract he will be offered.

I am not suprised they cut him, they have been able to stack there back field with such other great cast offs as TJ Duckett and Julius Jones.....meh no i dont get this but i suppose if you add Mo morris, Tj Duckett and Julius Jones all together i suppose it equals one Shaun Alexander circa 2005......good luck to Jim Mora jr for next year.........

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting

that the Seahawks have released RB Shaun Alexander. This isn't shocking by any

stretch but it's still significant when something like this goes from speculation

to reality.

Alexander isn't the player he once was but he's still a guy that could help plenty

of teams. I'd expect most organizations to see how their draft shakes out this

weekend before making any big offers to Alexander though. Should be interesting.

Momo, Duckett, Weaver and Jones aren't expected to equal SA from 2005, but it's a good bet it's better than SA circa 2007. It's likely a short term fix for a season or two. And Mora isn't the coach until the 2009 season.

No matter how many times it happens, it is still just amazing how hard and fast good running backs hit the end. I still can't figure out how I should feel about Shaun's tenure in Seattle, but one thing is for sure, he is not going to help any team ever again. This is Emmitt Smith and Eddie George all over again, going to new teams after their old ones throw in the towel. Not their fault, they just didn't have it anymore.

Alexander a Patriot? Colt?

According to ESPN's John Clayton, free agent RB Shaun Alexander has told his former teammates that he could end up in Indianapolis or New England. Detroit could offer him a two-year deal

If Alexander was offered the Lions job, he could be an instant starter. But if he ended up in New England, he could be the third down back, or a handcuff to RB Laurence Maroney. Either way, he is nothing but an RB3 for now.

They were talking tonight on the FoxSportsNet NE show about this. They thought it was more probable than not that he's coming here, and since he appaently wants to, he may be willing to play for pay. If so, he's a change of pace, short yardage, at best, guy. And possibly goalline vulture. He doesn't see the field on third down ever, unless it's third and less than a yard. Kevin Faulk is the third down back here.

What a mess that would be if SA joined the Pats. At this point you don't even want to own a Patriot RB and if he's added, Maroney or Morris or Eckel, etc would be in a 1st and maybe 2nd down. Then Faulk would be in on 3rd and SA would get all the 3rd and 1 or GL situations. Steer clear of all NE RBs if SA comes to town.

I could see the GL situation, but SA got shot down by a sniper 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage so many times last year that Maurice Morris became designated short yardage/power situation guy at the latter half of the 2008 season; and a poor one at that.

Emmitt wasn't exactly terrible in his last year Arizona, given that no other RB could produce in that offense either. But I agree with the Dallas-era Eddie George comparison. Not sure if SA will be THAT bad, but he doesn't appear to be far away.

Even I can admit that Emmitt was pretty good while in Arizona, and my blinding love for Barry usually taints anything positive for Emmitt. The only place where Alexander will be as good as Arizona Emmitt will be his nose for the end zone. Alexander has always been very good in the red zone. I don't think he's going to lose that. Wherever he ends up, it is funny to see his three choices as Indy, New England and Detroit.

Alexander To Contact Bengals?

Former Seattle RB Shaun Alexander is looking to get in touch with his hometown Cincinnati Bengals, according to The Enquirer. “Making calls to teams. Bengals are on our list!” Jim Steiner, Alexander's agent, told The Enquirer in an e-mail Wednesday.

The Bengals did not use any of their draft picks on a RB over the weekend. They currently have RB Rudi Johnson, RB Kenny Watson, RB Chris Perry and RB DeDe Dorsey competing for playing time. They also have last year's second round selection, RB Kenny Irons, rehabbing from injury. It would be a mild surprise to see the Bengals add Alexander. However, if they do add him expect one or more of the previously mentioned RBs on the roster to be cut.

Yep another washed-up RB who won't admit it. Give it up SA, you're done. I sure as hell hope the Colts don't waste $ on him.

You know you're at the end of the line when you find yourself calling teams to find out if they'd be interested in adding you to their roster. Hell, the agent looked and saw that the Bengals drafted no one at the RB position and thought hey Shaun you may have a chance of being signed by the Bengals.

He might not be a terrible investment if they could get him on the cheap as a backup. If he can pass-block and catch passes, he has more value than Kenton Keith.

That said, I think that he'll be looking for the opportunity to compete for a starting position, so it's probably a moot point.

Except that Shaun can't pass block or catch passes.
