Outshined
Second Round Speculation Phil Mackey KFAN.com -- April 24th, 2008 NFL experts Paul Charchian and John Tuvey discussed possible second round options for the Vikings on Saturday. Listen now. Outskirts of Objectivity: Eyes On Second Round Phil Mackey KFAN.com -- April 23, 2008 Here’s an off-the-top-of-my-head list of players who may or may not be available to the Vikings with the 47th overall pick: QBs Brian Brohm, Chad Henne, Joe Flacco OT Carl Nicks, Nebraska OT Anthony Collins, Kansas CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech S Reggie Smith, Oklahoma DE Lawrence Jackson, USC DE Calais Campbell, Miami S DaJuan Morgan, Ohio State Even with the acquisition of Jared Allen, the Vikings could still take a defensive end in the second round if the value is right. But it’s more likely they’ll take a quarterback, offensive tackle, safety or cornerback. It sounds like there is a 90% + chance that Jared Allen will be at the Vikings draft party on Saturday. KFAN will broadcast live from the event, and even though the Vikings don’t pick in the first round, the place will probably be rockin’. alexgaddis
I would be happy with one of those QB's...but they won't go that direction, they are convinced Tarvaris is the man, even if no one else is... OT or Safety will be the pick IMO
Savage Beatings
McKinnie is almost assuredly out for 2 to 4 games with a suspension. Plus he really only gives a decent effort for about half of the games anyway. Plus he's a gigantic immobile blob of a man who is not very well suited for all of the movement that Childress' scheme demands. I REALLY hope they draft another Tackle. T-Scorp
The problem with giving up both 3rd rounders is that we can't draft the BAP in round 2 but have to draft for need. That is why I don't belive they will take a QB. My feeling is they will try to get a TE in the 4th. My gut is OT or CB in the second. Skilly
I listened to Peter King on Sirius radio yesterday, and he was KILLING the Vikings for making this deal. Mostly due to the DUI factor that Allen had two years ago. However, I think it was a fairly good deal, considering that the Vikes didn't give up any future picks. More often than not, your 3rd through 7th rounders are shots in the dark and most only have brief NFL careers. I can see them taking an OL with their second round pick. Sounds like the smart thing to do.

With that said, we also probably won't be dealing with any hold outs either.
BillyBalata
I listened to Peter King on Sirius radio yesterday, and he was KILLING the Vikings for making this deal. All the more reason to believe this was the right thing to do. Put me in the OT bandwagon with that 2nd round choice. CB or safety works too. CaP'N GRuNGe
OT would be the best choice. I'm still stuck on adding offensive playmakers though and would also really really like to get more competition at the QB spot.
MikesVikes
I'd think that they would have to go OT as well here. If they get a decent "best player available" pick, I'd be happy to grab a player dropping down the draft. I'm a little PO'd that I won't be at home watching this draft. I'll be just arriving from a 3 1/2 hour drive just when they predict the Vikings will be making tgheir pick. My Entertainment for the night. THE SIX KINGS
There are a lot of mock drafts on that Internet deal. Many of them include second rounds. Here's a sampling of projections for the Vikings' first pick, 47th overall, with a different player projected from each source. Of course, not all have been updated since the Vikings traded for defensive end Jared Allen: • Duane Brown, OT, Virginia Tech (Todd McShay, Scouts Inc.) • John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame (Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN) • Oniel Cousins, OT, Texas-El Paso (walterfootball.com) • DaJuan Morgan, S, North Carolina State (nfldraftcountdown.com) • Early Doucet, WR, LSU (fantasyfootballjungle.com) • Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan (draftboardinsider.com) • Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida (gbnreport.com) • Chad Henne, QB, Michigan (kffl.com) • Dustin Keller, TE, Purdue (warroomreport.com) • Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC (newerascouting.com) • Calais Campbell, DE, Miami (draftseason.com) • Terrell Thomas, CB, USC (fantasysportsdrafts.com) • Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech (junkyardjake.com) • Justin King, CB, Penn State (draftseason.com) • Anthony Collins, OT, Kansas (nflmockdraftaces.com) • Patrick Lee, CB, Auburn (newnfldraft.com) • Joe Flacco, QB, Delaware (phsports.blogspot.com) • Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma (footballsfuture.com) • Carl Nicks, OT, Nebraska (nfldraftspecialist.com) • Martellus Bennett, TE, Texas A&M (thefootballexpert.com) • Curtis Lofton, LB, Oklahoma (sportsnewssouthwest.com) • Tracy Porter, CB, Indiana (freewebs.com/footballthoughts Source: StarTribune
Chadman
I think they like Carlson a lot, and that's a great local angle, of course, being from near Minneapolis. I would be surprised if they went for him in Round 2, though...would love it if they would get a good OLman, and then land Carlson in the 4th, but he might not last that long, and they certainly could use a good TE - THIS year. He would be a great fit, and I would be ecstatic.
kingfish247
Kind of off this topic but I'm just throwing this out there in case anyone knows... Why didn't the Vikes have to give the Chiefs two 1st rounders for Allen? The non-exclusive tag rules say any team that is losing the tagged player has a right to demand two 1st rounders. The only thing that I can think happened is the Chiefs waived that right in the interest of getting a deal done.

Outshined
Vikings trade up, take safety April 26th, 2008 – 6:28 PM by Judd Zulgad The Vikings selected Arkansas State safety Marcellous (Tyrell) Johnson with their only pick of the opening two rounds of the draft. Minnesota liked Johnson enough that it traded with Philadelphia to move up from No. 47 to No. 43 in the second round to take him. The Vikings gave up their fourth-round pick to the Eagles and got Philadelphia’s fifth-round pick. Minnesota now has two fifth-round picks on Sunday. Vikings coach Brad Childress said the team had Johnson ranked 17th on their draft board — the top safety available — and called him a “solid all-around athlete.” Childress pointed to his performance in a game against Texas as a key selling point. “He had an outstanding game against a pretty good caliber Texas team,” Childress said during an evening news conference at Winter Park. “That’s what you look for.” Johnson, whose father is former NBA player Alvin Robertson, doesn’t remember talking to the Vikings before the draft and admitted it was a surprise the team took him. “I had no idea,” the Vikings would take him, Johnson said in a conference call with Twin Cities reporters. “I’m really proud the Vikings took me and proud to be a Viking.” Johnson, who ended his collegiate career as the all-time leading tackler in the Sun Belt Conference, thought the Giants might take him with the 31st pick in the opening round. “I thought a few teams would take a chance one me in the first round,” he said. The Vikings needed to add depth at safety and also get a bit younger at that position and this helps in both areas. The Vikings now have Darren Sharper and Madieu Williams as their starting safeties; Eric Frampton and veteran Michael Boulware, signed as a free agent this offseason, are the backups. The Vikings needed to get a young safety in part because 2006 fifth-round pick Greg Blue failed to make the roster last season. Here’s what the Pro Football Weekly draft guide had to say about Johnson: Proved he more than belongs after an impressive Combine performance — topped all safeties in teh bench press (27 reps) and broad jump (10 feet, 7 inches), and turned in a better-than-expected 40-yard dash time of 4.44 seconds. … Is still raw in coverage but could step in and start from day one as a box safety. Check out this bio on Johnson. And here are a couple of links on You Tube that contain highlights of Johnson in action. Click and . Here is a look at the Vikings’ latest lineup of picks: Second round: 43rd overall — Tyrell Johnson, S, Arkansas State Fifth round: 150th overall and 152nd overall Sixth round: 187th overall and 193rd overall Sventh round: 209th overall
j2v
I still like the Allen trade, and I understand the value and eventual need that the Johnson pick addresses. But without a third or a fourth it's going to be extremely difficult to address the needs at TE and on the right side of the O-line. O-LINE There's no way Cousins or Collins (both second-rounders on most value boards) fall another 90 picks It would be great if Jeremy Zuttah (Rutgers, could play almost anywhere) or John Greco (Toledo, G/T) slipped, but they both have third-round grades so I'm not holding my breath. Maybe Mike McGlynn (Pitt, T) or Donald Thomas (Connecticut, G/T) slides. Otherwise we're looking at a couple of oversized underachievers in King Dunlap (Auburn, T) or Barry Richardson (Clemson, T) or maybe Geoff Schwartz (Oregon, T), or Brandon Keith (Northern Iowa, T). I'm not sure that I'm excited about plugging any of them into the starting lineup. And I don't know that another year of Ryan Cook is the solution, either. TIGHT END Brad Cottam (Tennessee) and Craig Stevens (Cal) are third-rounders on the value board; they won't slide. Maybe Martin Rucker (Missouri) or Jacob Tamme (Kentucky) will be there, but everybody else is a project. We didn't want to bring Ben Utecht home again because...? I suppose Allen can play some TE; I'd certainly trust his hands over Shiancoe's. On the bright side, the Packers didn't fill any pressing needs and the Lions still don't have a running back. 2V
j2v
So Anthony Collins sits on the board for 50 picks today and the Vikings can't move up to get him? This is a guy who most scouts had in Round Two, with the knock being he's coming out a year early. Wouldn't he be worth next year's second rounder? Or at least a third? Surely the Patriots would have taken next year's second-rounder for their bottom of the third round pick. Meanwhile Greco, Zuttah, Rinehart, and Cousins go off the board in Round 3, and Cody Wallace, Mike McGlynn, and Shawn Murphy picked so far today. I guess the Vikings can hope Brandon Keith stays out of jail and on the board until their pick at 150. I'm sure Ryan Cook is a fine fellow, but there is a limited number of people who can play offensive line effectively in the NFL and unfortunately he doesn't appear to be one of them. Straying off topic slightly (but still within the division)... is it too early to move Kevin Smith way up in dynasty league rankings? 2V
MikesVikes
I'm not sure what the Vikes see in Shiancoe. Maybe they don't want to invest more $ into the position. I wouldn't mind seeing a replacement to Shiancoe if that's the feeling.
