My Draft Wish List (Broncos)

Last year was a bad draft in which Shanahan traded up and down and out of rounds in a very bizzare fasion. I wasn't entirely dissapointed with Jarvis Moss but the trade to acquire Marcus Thomas might prove to be a crippling move for the 'o7 draft class.

Just the year previous, I had Jay Cutler as my top ranked QB and Brandon Marshall was my favorite WR sleeper. As we all know, Shanny traded up to snag Cutler and landed Marshall in the 4th round after getting Tony Scheffler in the 2nd. I couldn't have been happier about the 2oo6 draft but we are presently in the here and now. What's on Shanny's mind is anybody's best guess but if he's reading the boards, this is my top wish list for 2oo8:

Rashard Mendenhall, RB -Illinois - The last thing the Broncos need is another RB in an already deep corps but this kid is the truth. I haven't been this impressed with an RB coming out of college in a long time. The beautiful thing about Mendenhall is his vision and size. He sees the cutback lanes probably better than any RB in this draft. He will not only be the best RB from this class but definitely the best fit for our zone-scheme. Please note that if the Broncos draft this kid, I just might move out to Denver.

DuJuan Morgan, S -NC State - If it wasn't for a car wreck that fractured his hip as a senior in highschool, we'd be talking about Morgan as a 1st round pick from Ohio State but the school decided to revoke his scholarship offer and the rest is history. Morgan has excelled in college and has a very new outlook on life. He's one of the best DBs in this draft and he could be had in the 2nd round. Solid character, will respond to coaching, and has a clear passion for this game. He could be a real asset to the locker room.

Jerome Simpson, WR -Coastal Carolina - Small school WRs have a tendancy of being boom or bust but this kid just looks the part. He's got huge hands and natural catching ability. It also helps that he had a 41.5 vertical leap at his pro day. At almost 6'2", Simpson has the kind of long arms and ups it will take to win red-zone jump balls. He'd be a really nice complement to Marshall someday.

That's all I'm asking for Shanny. So, if you're reading this.... I don't care who else you take, just make sure and get one of these guys. Feel free fellow Bronco fans to disagree as this is just one man's opinion and it would be great to hear some others.

No thoughts on linemen?

I like your WR, but I think we're good enough -- assuming Marshall can play -- with Colbert, Sammie, Stokley.

I like your RB even more, but we do have plenty.

We really need OL help. Supposedly, after Long taken by Miami, the Broncos are targetting one of three, so I think we should take one with the 12th pick. The LT who actually blocked for Cutler in college would be a neat pick... he's one of the three they're looking at.

What are the Broncos doing for PK? (And It's raining men! Hallelulah! It's raining men! letting Elam go?!)

I agree with the option of taking lineman. I am a lineman for the county.

OL, DL... it's all good. We need help on both sides of the ball at the line of scrimmage. 15 yards downfield, we're ok.

I'm not worried about kickers. We can always sign Morten Anderson at the last minute.

No question the Broncos need help on the O-line and chances are they skip on Mendenhall at 12 and probably take Ryan Clady from Boise St. which would suit me just fine. It's almost here and I can't wait!

Gotta go O-line with #12. Broncs need big, beefy lineman to keep Cutler upright and in the pocket. The days of the light, quick O-lineman for the zone blocking have passed.

What happened to that OL they drafted last year from Notre Dame? Was Harris his name? Is he going to play this year?

So my Broncos got Clady and are currently up now. Who will it be? Several WRs- Jackson, Sweed, Kelly, etc have dropped. Will Denver go in this direction or something totally different?

ETA: Eddie Royal? Not who I expected at all.

Clady! w00t!

While ERoyal may be a great WR and returner, we had bigger needs! Roar!:D

I agree and wasn't happy with that pick. And the Bengals just took Jerome Simpson. :D

Nice! Looks like he could play immediately at guard and eventually start or at least back-up at center (while starting as OG) when Nalen retires. And it looks like he's good at and enjoys the run game, can pull out and make good hits on the move.

Solid pick.

Word on Kory is he's a smart technician who gets good position and works hard to hold his blocks. He's got short arms and doesn't get much explosion coming off the LOS. He's a very solid candidate to start down the line in a zone blocking scheme.

Latest pick- CB, Jack Williams, Kent St.

Last year Williams struggled through injuries to both ankles and a bum shoulder. Durability and size (5-9 180 lbs) are issues. However, Williams is a great athlete with fluid hips and the long speed to turn and run. He has nice upside in man-off coverage.

The next two picks:

21 (120) Chicago Bears (From Buccaneers) Steltz, Craig S 6'1" 210 LSU

22 (121) Seattle Seahawks Bryant, Red DT 6'5" 328 Texas A&M

Is Williams that much better of a CB than Steltz as S or Bryant as DT? Seems like we'd be better off with a S or DT than a CB, so I'm confused.

Help me out here

Certianly can't help you out there as your thoughts are vaild.

Before this current pick was made I was thinking that I'd like to see the Broncos take Carlton Powell, DT, Virginia Tech, as he was the best remaining DT on the board. And wouldn't you know it, they did.

Powell is a very good athlete but the main reason he should make it as a starter in the NFL is because of his unbelievable motor and great work ethic. He is still on the small side (6-2 / 293 lbs) for the interior and won't be able to play anything but a one-gap role. Powell has the ability to shed blockers and disrupt plays in the backfield.

NFL.com's take:

Pick Analysis:This guy can fly - he has great speed. He ran a 4.32 at his Pro Day and also had very impressive numbers in the cone drill and vertical jump. He's got good size for a corner. Given his athleticism, he could be underrated as a prospect and is a great value at this point in the draft.

Great athlete learning from 2 of the best in the biz... if he can stay healthy, he could be a starter in a year or two. Not terrible. Personally, I think Foxworth sucks.

As for DLs, we did trade for Robertson. Plus Dumervil and Crowder were recent high draft picks. Maybe they think that's enough.

Well that's good to hear about Williams and as for Denver thinking they have enough D-lineman, they just took Carlton Powell. I really like the Powell pick and think he could play a nice role on our defense.

Yeah, I posted about 1 minute too soon.

While Tech has produced quality run-stuffing tackles in recent seasons, none has shown the ability to simply shut down the opposition's ground game the way Carlton Powell, Jr. can.

How dominant has Powell been? In 73 plays that he made vs. the run, he held the opponent to minus-21 yards rushing. Since Powell was inserted into the starting lineup, Tech has led the nation in total defense the last two years (2005-06) and led the Division 1-A ranks in scoring defense in 2006, after placing second the previous two seasons.

Could it be that nfl.com is overselling him? Perhaps... but dang. That sounds like exactly the sort of strength Denver needs. As much as I love Dumervil for getting to the QB, I'm psyched that his negatives does not have the word "undersized" in it.

Funny note from the Analysis section of his write up:

Compares To: DEWAYNE ROBERTSON-New York Jets.

Coincidence that we just acquired Robertson too?

Am I correct in thinking that they drafted Eddie Royal (new nickname---ROYALE WITH CHEESE) soley as a special teams speedster? Looks like he was a pretty decent kick returner at VT. Could it be that someone finally got Shanny to admit that special teams DO play a part in the NFL? Maybe someone showed him a tape of last year's Bears game before the draft.

I hope he works out. I was kind of hoping they would go with either Ray Rice or that safety Johnson that went next to the Vikes.

That's my opinoin as well. Foxworth is absolutely no help.

Also, don't forget Moss. Moss, Dumerville could be a decent end tandem. If we just have enough in the middle to clog things up, then maybe we'll be alright. Also, the fact that they didn't draft a middle linebacker tells me that they plan to bring back Wilson. Maybe that's a stretch, but it's either that, or Bailey is our answer in the middle...........oh boy.

I'm a little suprised that we've focused so much on offense when the defense was so pathetic last year.

God knows their return teams seem to always stink. My question is: why would they take him ahead of DeSean Jackson? Obviously they liked him better - I just don't know why.

The Rocky Mountain News seems to really think that Koutouvides will be the starter in the middle this year. I don't know why, since he's played almost nothing but special teams in the last 4 years. I think he started 2 games at MLB for Seattle back in his rookie year.
