Sheppard To The Jaguars?

The agent for Eagles DB Lito Sheppard says he has been in talks with the Jaguars.

Eagles HC Andy Reid was supposed to have met with Sheppard Monday about his contract, but we just can't see Sheppard wanting to stay after being demoted when the team signed DB Asante Samuel. A trade to the Jaguars would bring the Eagles picks for 2009.

Phillips To Play Free Safety

Giants first-round pick S Kenny Phillips is expected to play free safety this year.

Raiders S Gibril Wilson racked up 92 tackles at the free safety position last year, so Phillips could have some IDP value if he wins the job outright, but expect some growing pains in his first year.

Herm Discusses Jamaal Charles

The KC Chiefs are expecting a big contribution from third-round pick, Texas running back Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs already have RBs Larry Johnson and Kolby Smith, but Edwards indicated that the speedy Charles would have a role as both a ball carrier and a receiver out of the backfield. “He’s a change-of-pace kind of guy,” Edwards said. “He has tremendous speed. He makes big plays and has good hands, can catch the ball. He’s kind of a well-rounded guy. Is he a 25-carry guy? Probably not, but we’re not going to ask him to do that. We’re going to have a role for him. Last year, (two) of our backs got hurt. You’ve got to look at that, too.”

If Charles flashes, he could overtake Smith as the first backup option for LJ. Also, Johnson will be 29 in November, so we could witness some decline in LJ's production over the next few years.

Denver Adds RB to the Mix.

With their first pick of fifth round the Broncos took Arizona State RB Ryan Torain. Torain is one of the bigger tailbacks in the class at 6-0 3/8, 222 pounds. He rushed for 1,229 yards in '06 and fell off to 553 yards this past season when he missed six games with a Lisfranc dislocation in his left foot. He's a powerful runner who breaks some tackles and is able to take some punishment.

You are required to research every Denver RB. Coach Shanahan is not afraid to start anyone on his roster.

Browns Add TE

The Cleveland Browns traded a future 3rd Round selection in order to add TE Martin Rucker out of Missouri.

The addition of Rucker made little sense from a personnel standpoint. Rucker is a supremely talented pass catcher, but is a very poor blocker. GM Phil Savage admitted that Rucker's selection was a prime insurance policy. TE Kellen Winslow has had at least four surgeries on his knee and is currently searching for a new contract. This despite Winslow having three years left on his current deal. With backup TE Steve Heiden coming off surgery for a bulging disc, Rucker's selection could pay dividends in the coming years. He should have a pretty low-key rookie year, but keep a close eye on his progress and development for 2009 and beyond.

Doucet In The Slot?

Cardinals draft pick WR Early Doucet could have a chance to take over the slot receiving duties.

The team lost WR Bryant Johnson to the 49ers this offseason, so Doucet could step right in this summer. Doucet makes a very good dynasty pick late in the first-round, early second-round with the chance to contribute immediately.

Hightower In The Mix?

It's being reported that newly drafted Cardinals RB Tim Hightower could be in the mix as the team's goal-line back this season.

According to RBs coach Maurice Carthon, Hightower can be compared to RB Marion Barber as a guy without a great forty time, but good power. RB Edgerrin James owners may want to keep an eye on how well Hightower plays in camp.

RB Smith to Start?

ESPN's draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. reported Sunday that he expects RB Kevin Smith to be starting for the Detroit Lions.

Smith had a monster year rushing for over 2000 yards at Central Florida. He had over 140 yards and 2 TD's against Texas and lit up NC State for 217 yards and 2 TD's. The Lions drafted RT Gosder Cherilus in the 1st round and are expected to commit to the running game this season. RB Tatum Bell will be Smith's main competition, but if Smith becomes the starter he might be a solid late RB to add to your roster.

Bucs to Dump QB's

The Buccaneers made it clear that they have no intention of bringing seven quarterbacks to training camp. Instead, they plan to bring five signal callers to camp. Both the left-handed QB Chris Simms and/or QB Bruce Gradkowski, a 2006 sixth-round selection, appear to be on the trading or chopping block. With QB Jake Plummer retired, the Bucs likely will part ways with either Simms or Gradkowski before they report to training camp on July 25.

QB Jeff Garcia appears to be heading into the season as a starter. Garcia threw for 2,440 yards and 13 TD's last year despite missing three games. Garcia should be a decent QB2 for your roster because he doesn't make mistakes and can get the ball into the end zone through the air or with his feet. QB Brian Griese and QB Luke McCown should fight for the back up role and if rookie QB Josh Johnson shows promise they could practice squad him or take him as their #3.

Matt Lehr In Steroids Investigation

Convicted Plano steroids trafficker David Jacobs said publicly for the first time this weekend that he sold large amounts of illegal performance-enhancing drugs to Saints OG Matt Lehr. He also said that in 2006, MLehr used a hair-loss-prevention drug that can also act as a masking agent for steroid use.

With the steroid investigation taking over baseball, it might be only a matter of time before the investigation makes its way to the NFL. While Lehr is not an impact lineman, we'll keep an eye on this investigation because it could lead to bigger issues with the NFL steroid policy.

Glenn Safe For Now?

With the Cowboys not selecting a wide receiver in the draft, Cowboys WR Terry Glenn's status with the team looks a bit better.

Owner Jerry Jones says Glenn is still "very much" a part of Dallas' plans, but don't be surprised if you read that the Cowboys are linked to trade rumors involving a receiver. We still don't see Glenn being much of a fantasy factor.

Jets Three-Deep at TE

One NFL source said the drafting of TE Dustin Keller was a clear "cat-and-mouse" move to avoid a messy situation with TE Chris Baker, similar to the OL Pete Kendall ordeal of a year ago. "This is their insurance policy to make sure what happened with Pete doesn't happen again," the source told The Post. "They figured if they can get a high-round [draft pick] then they won't be stuck [like they were last year without a starting guard to replace Kendall]."

The Jets signed veteran free agent TE Bubba Franks to a one-year, $1.65 million deal this offseason and, as the 30th draft pick in the first round, Keller will be signed to a contract that'll pay him even more than that. Baker is due to make $683,000 this season. Money and a battle for playing time will not sit well with Baker for sure.

Avery Might Start As #3

Rams second-round pick, WR Donnie Avery, has a decent shot at the team's #3 receiver spot.

Receivers Torry Holt and Drew Bennett figure to start this year, but Avery could have a shot at seeing some action this season. He will likely go in the second-round in most dynasty leagues.

Forte to Challenge Benson

The Bears selected rookie RB Matt Forte and believe he is a "three down back".

This can't be good news for Cedric Benson. Benson hasn't exactly lived up to his first round draft selection and could be in danger of losing many carries if he doesn't pick up the pace. Be cautious with all Bears RBs when going to your draft.

Giants Would Like To Trade Woodson

The Giants would like to "develop" sixth-round QB Andre Woodson and trade him for a high draft pick in a few seasons.

We aren't too sure how much Woodson is going to be able to develop if he never sees the field. We wouldn't worry about him for now.

After I posted this update I went back and was reading the bit on Matt Forte. Are the Bears trying to light a fire under Benson (which I'm not sure can happen as he just may not have it in him to be better) or do they really think Forte can be an every down back?

Forte is 6-2 223 lbs, so he definitely has great size for the position. He has excellent hands and proved to be a capable runner last season. He's also a good enough blocker to spend time at fullback if needed. He runs hard with good instincts and will fall forward. However, Forte is anything but a burner, and his physical running style won't be nearly as effective in the NFL. He's not very elusive as he's really more of a three yards and a cloud of dust type of runner. Some think his best chance is to bulk up more and play fullback in the NFL (Alstott?). I can see Forte having great value on 3rd and shorts and as a GL back but can he be more? Just figured I'd ask cause many of you have probably seen more of Forte than I have and have a better feel for a player's skillset and how it translates to the Pro level.
