Suggs and Ogden Absent

Two big-time members of the Ravens failed to show for the team's mandatory minicamp today -- offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and outside linebacker Terrell Suggs. Ogden's absence was expected, but Suggs wasn't on the field because of a contract dispute.

Ogden is considering retirement and will be missed by the Ravens should he choose to retire, but Suggs is still in his prime as one of the top pass rushers in the game. The Ravens used the franchise tag on Suggs on Feb. 19, keeping him off the free-agent market with a one-year tender worth $8.065 million (the average of the five highest-paid linebackers in the NFL). But Suggs wants the one-year tag of $8.879 million for defensive ends -- $814,000 more than what linebackers receive. You should still consider Suggs as one of the elite IDP players this season.

Packers Cut Robinson

The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with veteran receiver Koren Robinson. His agent, Alvin Keels, confirmed that in an e-mail to the Press-Gazette this afternoon. “Yes, we have been notified that they are heading in that direction,” Keels said. “The reason is pretty much a numbers game. The Packers have gone younger at the receiver position and instead of dragging things out through camp, they decided to let Koren go now in order to give him the best opportunity to land somewhere else.”

The Packers drafted rookie WR Jordy Nelson early in the 2nd round and that pretty much left Robinson out of the mix. They also drafted WR Brett Swain in the 7th. In a backup role last season, Robinson caught 21 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown and returned 25 kickoffs for a 23.8-yard average. He is only 27 years old, so don't be surprised if he finds another team.

Opportunity for Bell

Heading into next week's opening of spring practice for the Browns, it appears D'Qwell Jackson is locked in at one starting inside linebacker job, with veteran Andra Davis and third-year Brown Leon Williams sharing the other spot. It remains to be seen how this year's top draft pick, Beau Bell, will be mixed in on the inside. Savage has made it clear Bell has a chance to be on the field as a rookie, and not just on special teams.

Bell is somewhat unknown since he comes from the UNLV, but he tested well and the Browns spent a draft choice on him with the hopes that he may take over for Willie McGinest. According to www.Draft.com, Bell could turn into a E.J. Henderson type player, which would be great for IDP owners.

Schaub Ready for Mini-Camp

Quarterback Matt Schaub, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder, will participate in drills this weekend. Guard Charles Spencer will participate in individual drills but not team drills."At this point, I don't want other guys around Charles' leg," Kubiak said. "As for Matt, since we're in shorts, he'll be able to do everything. If we were in pads (hitting), I'd hold him out."

Schaub should be listed as a sleeper candidate to be a QB1 this season. When he is healthy, he can put up big numbers with WR Andre Johnson. The key in Houston could be keeping Schaub protected.

More to Benson Arrest

Bears RB Cedric Benson hired a prominent defense attorney to help him fight charges of drunken boating and resisting arrest in Texas. "I do not believe that Cedric was intoxicated when his boat was boarded by the [Lower Colorado River Authority] officers for a safety inspection," Benson's new lawyer, Sam Bassett, said Thursday in an e-mail, the Chicago Tribune reported. Benson faces a May 19 court date -- the first day of Bears "organized team activities" -- but he does not have to be present in court.

Benson is coming off a 600+ yard season, where he missed five games with an injury, averaged 3.4 ypc and scored four TD's. Fans are writing him off as a bust and management may be doing the same with their selection of RB Matt Forte in the 2008 NFL Draft. Do not count on Benson to be a RB2 right now, he might be a RB3 depending on this court case and Forte's ability during camp.

Rogers Going to CFL?

Just weeks after the Toronto Argonauts signed former first-round NFL pick David Boston, the Montreal Alouettes are close to a deal with Charles Rogers, the second overall pick of the 2003 NFL draft."I would say there's about an 80-20 chance of him being at training camp, coming in and competing for a job," Montreal general manager Jim Popp said yesterday.

If you still had David Boston or Charles Rogers on your fantasy radar then you can scratch them off as they look to be joining the CFL soon.

Carriker Not In OTAs

Rams DL Adam Carriker is not participating in the team's OTAs because of a torn labrum.

Carriker, who doesn't have much IDP value, is expected to be back once training camp begins in July.

Williams Not Fitting In

According to his teammate, Cowboys LB Greg Ellis, DB Roy Williams says he feels like he didn't fit in HC Wade Phillips' defensive scheme.

Williams is a bit of an anomaly on the football field. He's a bit too big to play in the secondary, but he isn't big enough to play linebacker. On Michael Irvin's talk show, he openly admitted that he gets scared if he has to cover tight ends. This will likely be Williams' last year in Dallas if he doesn't show he can play up to his potential.

Kitna Wants 10 Wins

"Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don't win 10 games," QB Jon Kitna said Tuesday. "Because that will mean we're not in the playoffs and that sucks. I can't make it any simpler than that. Anybody who says that's not their expectations level is unfortunately not that much of a competitor."

Kitna threw for over 4000 yards and 18 TD's last year with Mike Martz calling the plays. The offense will be more conservative and rely on the run more this season, so Kitna's yardage will fall. However, his TD's should remain in the 20 range and his INT's should cut from 20 to about 12-15. Kitna is a QB2 type player entering next season.

Bell Overweight

Lions RB Tatum Bell showed up for voluntary workouts "a bit heavy". “He might be up there a little bit more, yeah,” Marinelli said. “But like I told these guys – told them all – just make sure we’re aware of where we’re at. Right now, it’s still the off-season. But I want to make sure we’re working toward the perfect weight to enter camp. I’m aware of every guy. They’re made aware of where I want them.”

Bell will likely be battling rookie RB Kevin Smith for the starting job in Detroit this season. Bell usually finds himself in the dog house, so make Smith down as one of the few rookies with big potential.

What is Duckett's Role?

Seattle has struggled to convert short-yardage rushing opportunities over the past two years. It's a role that many have already penciled RB T.J. Duckett into. Not so fast, though. "There are some teams that take a big, strong pile-driving guy and I guess they call him a short-yardage back," Holmgren said. "I have never done that. In fact, when I have done that it hasn't worked very well."

Holmgren's comments appear that Duckett won't be the goalline back, but this is May and his mind could change after watching Julius Jones run the ball in tight situations. Marion Barber made Jones look soft in Dallas and if that is the case in Seattle, our money is on Duckett to get the TDs.

Lions Still Talking Run Game

Coach Rod Marinelli wants the Lions to put on a show in the running game this season. "I think so much of it is an attitude up front," Marinelli said, "when these guys come off the ball together like a chorus line and hit it full speed." The offense has a new coordinator, Jim Colletto, who plans to run the ball more and has installed a zone running scheme. RB's Kevin Smith, Tatum Bell and Brian Calhoun have played in zone schemes before. "So they're very familiar with the cuts," Marinelli said.

Bell has the experience and previous productivity to be an NFL back. Smith has the size, speed, and power to be a very good zone back, and Calhoun is still a mystery with knee surgeries. Marinelli is a hard nose guy, so the run game will be a major factor of the Lions offense this offseason, you may want to take Smith and Bell if you want a part of the Lions running game.

Bucs Not After Henry?

Contrary to what at least one published report has suggested, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not interested in former Cincinnati WR Chris Henry. According to a blog entry made on the Tampa Tribune's website on Tuesday, Henry, was given permission by a judge in Cincinnati to travel to another city to tryout for another NFL team. However, sources tell PewterReport.com that the Buccaneers are not interested in working out - or signing -- Henry.

Henry could have been a big threat for the Bucs, who have 14 WR's listed on their roster. Instead expect WR Joey Galloway to again lead the charge and for WR Michael Clayton, WR Maurice Stovall, and WR Antonio Bryant to fight for the possession/red zone spot in the offense.

Jets Interested in Law

Sources are reporting that the Jets are interested in signing free agent DB Ty Law.

Law spent the 2005 season with the Jets and would more than likely enjoy a trip back since he is unemployed at the moment. It is rumored the Jets could move Law to safety which would give him some IDP value if the move happened.

McIntosh on Schedule

Redskins HC Jim Zorn said LB Rocky McIntosh (major knee surgery) remains on pace to be ready for training camp.

McIntosh had 87 tackles last season in 14 games before his knee injury. He could be a nice sleeper LB this season if healthy. The Redskins attacking defense could produce nice stats for IDP owners.

Good stuff as always.

I like Schaub a lot this year IF he can stay healthy.

Funny, how that talks about three former top wr picks - Boston , Rogers and K robinson - All busts. Just goes to show how unpredictable wr's can be.

Thanks Chappy.

Didn't Kitna want 10 wins last season as well?

Yup. I guess he figures that one of these years, while he's still the starter, he may be right.
